<li><strong>Interaction between host G3BP and viral nucleocapsid protein regulates SARS-CoV-2 replication</strong> -

G3BP1/2 are paralogous proteins that promote stress granule formation in response to cellular stresses, including viral infection. G3BP1/2 are prominent interactors of the nucleocapsid (N) protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the functional consequences of the G3BP1-N interaction in the context of viral infection remain unclear. Here we used structural and biochemical analyses to define the residues required for G3BP1-N interaction, followed by structure-guided mutagenesis of G3BP1 and N to selectively and reciprocally disrupt their interaction. We found that mutation of F17 within the N protein led to selective loss of interaction with G3BP1 and consequent failure of the N protein to disrupt stress granule assembly. Introduction of SARS-CoV-2 bearing an F17A mutation resulted in a significant decrease in viral replication and pathogenesis in vivo, indicating that the G3BP1-N interaction promotes infection by suppressing the ability of G3BP1 to form stress granules.

The non-invasive monitoring of the hemodynamics and metabolism of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) during respiration became a topic of increased interest partially due to the increased use of mechanical ventilation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Near-infrared diffuse optical spectroscopies were proposed as potential practical monitors of increased recruitment of SCM during respiratory distress. They can provide clinically relevant information on the degree of the patient's respiratory effort that is needed to maintain an optimal minute ventilation, with potential clinical application ranging from evaluating chronic pulmonary diseases to more acute settings, such as acute respiratory failure, or to determine the readiness to wean from invasive mechanical ventilation. In this paper, we present a detailed characterization of the optical properties (wavelength dependent absorption and reduced scattering coefficients) and hemodynamic properties (oxy-, deoxy- and total hemoglobin concentrations, blood flow, blood oxygen saturation and metabolic rate of oxygen extraction) of the human SCM, obtained by measuring sixty-five subjects through ultrasound-guided near-infrared time-resolved and diffuse correlation spectroscopies. We provide detailed tables of the results related to SCM baseline (i.e. muscle at rest) properties, and reveal significant differences on the measured parameters due to variables such as side of the neck, sex, age, body mass index and thickness of the overlaying tissues, allowing future clinical studies to take into account such dependencies.

<li><strong>Identification of side effects of COVID-19 drug candidates on embryogenesis using an integrated zebrafish screening platform</strong> -

||||
Drug repurposing is an important strategy in COVID-19 treatment, but many clinically approved compounds have not been extensively studied in the context of embryogenesis, thus limiting their administration during pregnancy. Here we used the zebrafish embryo model organism to test the effects of 162 marketed drugs on cardiovascular development. Among the compounds used in the clinic for COVD-19 treatment, we found that Remdesivir led to reduced body size and heart functionality at clinically relevant doses. Ritonavir and Baricitinib showed reduced heart functionality and Molnupiravir and Baricitinib showed effects on embryo activity. Sabizabulin was highly toxic at concentrations only 5 times higher than Cmax and led to a mean mortality of 20% at Cmax. Furthermore, we tested if zebrafish could be used as a model to study inflammatory response in response to spike protein treatment and found that Remdesivir, Ritonavir, Molnupiravir, Baricitinib as well as Sabizabulin counteracted the inflammatory response related gene expression upon SARS-CoV-2 spike protein treatment. Our results show that the zebrafish allows to study immune-modulating properties of COVID-19 compounds and highlights the need to rule out secondary defects of compound treatment on embryogenesis. The glycosylation of viral envelope proteins can play important roles in virus biology and immune evasion. The spike (S) glycoprotein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) includes 22 N-linked glycosylation sequons and 17 O-linked glycosites. Here, we investigated the effect of individual glycosylation sites on SARS-CoV-2 S function in pseudotyped virus infection assays and on sensitivity to monoclonal and polyclonal neutralizing antibodies. In most cases, removal of individual glycosylation sites decreased the infectiousness of the pseudotyped virus. For glycosylation mutants in the N-terminal domain (NTD) and the receptor binding domain (RBD), reduction in pseudotype infectivity was predicted by a commensurate reduction in the level of virion-incorporated spike protein. Notably, the presence of a glycan at position N343 within the RBD had diverse effects on neutralization by RBD-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) cloned from convalescent individuals. The N343 glycan reduced overall sensitivity to polyclonal antibodies in plasma from COVID-19 convalescent individuals, suggesting a role for SARS-CoV-2 spike glycosylation in immune evasion. However, vaccination of convalescent individuals produced neutralizing activity that was resilient to the inhibitory effect of the N343 glycan.

<li><strong>Vaccines at Velocity: Evaluating Potential Lives Saved by Earlier Vaccination in the COVID-19 Pandemic</strong> -

Fast development of COVID-19 vaccines likely averted millions of deaths. We estimate how many more lives could have been saved if safe and effective vaccines were available earlier in the pandemic, in particular, before the epidemic waves in winter of 2020. We fit an epidemiological model informed by retrospective data and simulate counterfactual vaccination scenarios for the United Kingdom and the United States in which vaccines are available between 30 and 90 days earlier. We find that up to 1 July 2021 reductions in mortality range from 10,000 to 48,000 in the UK and 53,000 to 130,000 in the US, depending on when vaccinations start. This corresponds to a maximum of 7.1 and 4 deaths averted per 10,000 people in the UK and US respectively. We find that our model is sensitive to uncertain vaccine parameters and benefits depend on the time horizon of the analysis. However, the large average reductions we estimate suggests that it is highly cost-effective to make large investments in strategies to expedite vaccine availability.

Background: Pregnancy was considering a health condition that could support high severity in COVID-19, among others the cardiologic and respiratory systems express some physiologic change in the pregnant women and could specially affected in COVID-19. Pregnant women characteristically have an increase volume of blood, with a higher cardiac output and lower peripheral vascular resistance, these could be negative affected by hypoalbuminemia frequently observed in COVID-19. Then, an early recognition of hypoalbuminemia in pregnant women with COVID-19 would help us to predict fatal outcome. Objective: We conduct a study to analyzed the demographic, clinical, blood gas test results, laboratory and ultrasonographic doppler data in pregnant women with COVID-19 that demand medical attention for labor. Study design: Ninety-two pregnant women with COVID-19 were included in our study from may 30th 2020 to august 12th 2022, and data was analyzed in survival and fatal outcome patients. Normality test were applied to data and parametric or non-parametric test were used to determine statistical difference between or among data. Results: Demographic and clinical data were quite similar between survival and fatal outcome pregnant patients with COVID-19. Also, blood gas test shown similar results among groups (asymptomatic, mild, or severe patients who survive COVID-19 or fatal outcome patients). We observed that serum albumin was consistently low in pregnant patients with fatal outcome by COVID-19, then based on Total Protein concentration in serum we calculated the colloido-osmotic pressure and we evaluate its utility as predictor of fatal outcome. ROC analysis and Kaplan-Meier of survival curves suggest that the colloido-osmotic pressure could be a potential predictor. Also, we observed an association of low colloido-osmotic pressure and low amniotic fluid index. Conclusion: Our study suggests that early evaluation of pregnant with COVID-19 must include the calculation of colloido-osmotic pressure and the doppler analysis to early recognition of fatal outcome in pregnant women with COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 reinfections increased substantially after Omicron variants emerged. Large-scale community-based comparisons across multiple Omicron waves of reinfection characteristics, risk factors, and protection afforded by previous infection and vaccination, are limited, especially after widespread national testing stopped. We studied 245,895 adults >=18y in the UK9s national COVID-19 Infection Survey with at least one infection (identified from positive swab tests done within the study, linked from national testing programmes, or self-reported by participants, up to their last study assessment). We quantified the risk of reinfection in multiple infection waves, including those driven by BA.1, BA.2, BA.4/5, and most recently BQ.1/CH.1.1/XBB.1.5 variants, in which most reinfections occurred. Reinfections had higher cycle threshold (Ct) values (lower viral load) and lower percentages self-reporting symptoms compared with first infections. Across multiple Omicron waves, protection against reinfection was significantly higher in those previously infected with more recent than earlier variants, even at the same time from previous infection. Protection against Omicron reinfections decreased over time from the most recent infection if this was the previous or penultimate variant (generally within the preceding year), but did not change or even slightly increased over time if this was with an even earlier variant (generally >1 year previously). Those 14-180 days after receiving their most recent vaccination had a lower risk of reinfection with all Omicron variants except BA.2 than those >180 days from their most recent vaccination. Reinfection risk was independently higher in those aged 30-45 years, and with either low or high Ct values in their most recent previous infection. Overall, the risk of Omicron reinfection is high, but with lower severity than first infections; reinfection risk is likely driven as much by viral evolution as waning immunity.

Introduction: The PROTECT National Core Study was funded by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to investigate routes of transmission for SARS-CoV-2 and variation between settings. Methods: A workshop was organised in Oct 2022.We brought together evidence from five published epidemiological studies that compared risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 mortality by occupation or sector funded by PROTECT relating to three non-overlapping data sets, plus additional unpublished analyses relating to the Omicron period. We extracted descriptive study level data and model results. We investigated risk across four pandemic waves using forest plots for key occupational groups by time-period. Results: Results were largely consistent across different studies with different expected biases. Healthcare and social care sectors saw elevated risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 mortality early in the pandemic, but thereafter this declined and varied by specific occupational subgroup. The education sector saw sustained elevated risks of infection after the initial lockdown period with little evidence of elevated mortality. Conclusions: Increased in risk of infection and mortality were consistently observed for occupations in high risk sectors particularly during the early stage of the pandemic. The education sector showed a different pattern compared to the other high risk sectors, as relative risk of infections remained high in the later phased of the pandemic, although no increased in COVID-19 mortality (compared to low-risk occupations) was observed in this sector in any point during the pandemic.

Background COVID-19 is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular outcomes in the general population, but it is unknown whether people with pre-existing chronic respiratory disease (CRD) have a higher risk of cardiovascular events post-COVID-19 compared with the general population and, if so, what respiratory-related risk factors may modify this risk in these people. Methods Primary and secondary care data from the National Health Service and COVID-19-specific linked data were used to define a population of adults in England with COVID-19 (index date) between 01/01/2020-30/11/2021. Adjusted Cox Proportional Hazard regression was used to quantify the association between CRD, asthma-related factors, COPD-related factors, and risk of cardiovascular events. CRD included asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, or pulmonary fibrosis prior to COVID-19 diagnosis. Asthma-specific factors included baseline asthma control, exacerbations, and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) dose. COPD-specific risk factors included baseline ICS prescriptions and exacerbations. Secondary objectives quantified the impact of COVID-19 hospitalisation and vaccine dose on cardiovascular outcomes. Results Of 3,670,455 people, those with CRD had a modest higher risk of cardiovascular events (HRadj 1.11, 95%CI 1.07-1.14), heart failure (HRadj 1.15, 1.09-1.21), and pulmonary emboli (HRadj 1.20, 1.11-1.30) compared with people without CRD. In people with asthma, baseline exacerbations and high-dose ICS were associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular outcomes (HRadj 1.24, 1.15-1.34 and 1.12, 1.01-1.24, respectively). In people with COPD, exacerbations were associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular outcomes (HRadj 1.40, 1.28-1.52). Regardless of CRD, the risk of cardiovascular events was lower with increasing COVID-19 vaccine dose. Conclusions Higher risk of cardiovascular events following COVID-19 might be explained at least in part by the underlying CRD and severity of that condition. In addition, COVID-19 vaccines were beneficial to both people with and without CRD with regards to CV events.

Personality is a study of persons. However, persons exist within contexts, and personality coherence emerges from persons in contexts. But persons and environments bidirectionally influence each other, with persons selecting into and modifying their contexts, which also have lasting influences on personality. Thus, environmental change should produce changes in personality. Alternatively, environmental changes may produce few changes. This paradoxical viewpoint is based on the idea that novel environments have no predefined appropriate way to behave, which allows preexisting personality systems to stay coherent (Caspi & Moffitt, 1993). We test these two perspectives by examining longitudinal consistency idiographic personality coherence using a quasi-experimental design (N = 50; total assessments = 5,093). Personality coherence was assessed up to one year before the COVID-19 pandemic and again during lockdown. We also test antecedents and consequences of consistency, examining both what prospectively predicts consistency as well as what consistency prospectively predicts. Overall, consistency was modest but there were strong individual differences, indicating some people were quite consistent despite environmental upheaval. Moreover, there were relatively few antecedents and consequences of consistency, with the exception of some goals and domains of satisfaction predicting consistency, leaving open the question of why changes in coherence occurs.

Over 230,000 COVID-19 cases and over 2,200 deaths have been reported in Mozambique though May 2023. Understanding community members9 knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and prevention is essential for directing public health interventions to reduce disease spread and improve vaccination coverage. Here, we describe knowledge of COVID-19 transmission, prevention, and symptoms among community residents in Mozambique. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 33,087 households in a Health and Demographic Surveillance System in Manhica, Mozambique. Participants were recruited at the tail end of the Delta variant wave in September 2021 to the peak of Omicron cases in January 2022. Principal components analysis was used to create scores representing knowledge of COVID-19 symptoms, transmission, and prevention. Multiple imputation and quasi-Poisson regression were used to examine associations between demographic characteristics and sources of COVID-19 information, and knowledge of COVID-19 symptoms, transmission, and prevention. We examined whether sources of COVID-19 information mediated the relationship between educational attainment and knowledge of symptoms, transmission, and prevention. Across this rural community, 98.2%, 97.0%, and 85.1% of respondents reported knowing how COVID-19 could be prevented, that SARS-CoV-2 can cause disease, and how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted, respectively. Most cited symptoms were cough (51.2%), headaches (44.9%), and fever (44.5%); transmission mechanisms were droplets (50.5%) or aerosol (46.9%) from an infected person; and prevention measures were handwashing (91.9%) and mask-wearing (91.8%). Characteristics associated with greater knowledge of symptoms, transmission, and prevention included having at least primary education, older age, employment, higher wealth, and Christian religion. Respondents who had had COVID-19 symptoms were also more likely to have knowledge of symptoms, transmission, and prevention. Gathering information from TV, WhatsApp, radio, and hospital mediated the relationship between educational attainment and knowledge scores. These findings support the need for outreach and for community-engaged messaging to promote prevention measures, particularly among people with low education.

Rationale: Covid-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) is a life-threatening complication in patients with severe COVID -19. Previously, acute respiratory distress syndrome in patients with COVID-19 has been associated with lung fungal dysbiosis, evidenced by reduced microbial diversity and Candida colonisation. Increased fungal burden in the lungs of critically ill COVID-19 patients is linked to prolonged mechanical ventilation and increased mortality. However, specific mycobiome signatures associated with severe COVID-19 in the context of survival and antifungal drug prophylaxis have not yet been determined and such knowledge could have an important impact on treatment. Objectives: To understand the composition of the respiratory mycobiome in critically ill COVID -19 patients with and without CAPA, the impact of antifungal use and its role in patient outcome. Methods: We performed a multi-national study of 39 COVID-19 patients in intensive care units (ICU) with and without CAPA. Respiratory mycobiome was profiled using ITS1 sequencing and Aspergillus fumigatus burden was further validated using qPCR. Fungal communities were investigated using alpha diversity, beta diversity, taxa prevalence and taxa abundances. Measurements and Main Results: Respiratory mycobiomes were dominated by Candida and Aspergillus. There was no significant association with corticosteroid use or CAPA diagnosis and respiratory fungal communities. Increased A. fumigatus burden was associated with mortality. The use of antifungals at ICU admission was associated with an absence of A. fumigatus. The major factor that shapes the global perspective for increase or diminution of successive pandemic waves of COVID-19 is the immunological protection. The SARS-CoV-2 virus constantly develops new variants, and capability of immune evasion is among the major factors that promote variant spreading in the human population. After two years of the pandemic and virus evolution, it is almost impossible to explain effects of all possible combinations different viral strains, a few types of vaccinations or new variants infecting an individual patient. Instead of variant-to-variant comparisons, identification of key protein regions linked to immune evasion could be efficient. Here we report an approach for experimental identification of SARS-CoV-2 protein regions that (i) have characteristics of cross-reacting IgG hot-spots, and (ii) are highly immunogenic. Cross-reacting IgG hot spots are regions of protein frequently recognized in many variants by cross-reacting antibodies. Immunogenic regions efficiently induce specific IgG production in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. We determined four regions that demonstrate both significant immunogenicity and the activity of a cross-reacting IgG hot-spot in protein S, and two such regions in protein N. Their distribution within the proteins suggests that they may be useful in vaccine design and in serological diagnostics of COVID?19.

A significant increase of hospital-acquired bacterial infections during the COVID-19 pandemic has become an urgent medical problem. Clostridioides difficile is an urgent antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogen and a leading causative agent of nosocomial infections. The increasing recurrence of C. difficile infection and antibiotic resistance in C. difficile has led to an unmet need for discovery of new compounds distinctly different from present antimicrobials, while antimicrobial peptides as promising alternatives to conventional antibiotics have attracted growing interest recently. Protein synthesis is an essential metabolic process in all bacteria and a validated antibiotic target. Initiation factor 1 from C. difficile (Cd-IF1) is the smallest of the three initiation factors that acts to establish the 30S initiation complex to initiate translation during protein biosynthesis. Here we report the solution NMR structure of Cd-IF1 which adopts a typical {beta}-barrel fold and consists of a five-stranded {beta}-sheet and one short -helix arranged in the sequential order {beta}1-{beta}2-{beta}3-1-{beta}4-{beta}5. The interaction of Cd-IF1 with the 30S ribosomal subunit was studied by NMR titration for the construction of a structural model of Cd-IF1 binding with the 30S subunit. The short -helix in IF1 was found to be critical for IF1 ribosomal binding. A peptide derived from this -helix was tested and displayed a high ability to inhibit the growth of C. difficile and other bacterial strains. <li><strong>Mortality associated with influenza and Omicron infections in France and vaccination of healthcare workers in nursing homes</strong> -

Background: During the winter of 2022-2023, high rates of all-cause mortality, not seen since April 2020, were recorded in France, with excess all-cause mortality being related to the Omicron and influenza epidemics during that period. Moreover, that period saw a significant increase in the proportion of residents in long-term care facilities among cases of death in the population. Studies have found that increased influenza vaccination coverage in healthcare workers can result in a substantial reduction (up to 20%-30% during the course of select influenza seasons in the pre-pandemic period) in all-cause mortality in residents in nursing homes. Methods: We applied the previously developed methodology to estimate the contribution of influenza infections to all-cause mortality in France for the 2014-2015 through the 2018-2019 influenza seasons, and the contribution of both SARS-CoV-2 and influenza infections to all-cause mortality between week 33, 2022 through week 12, 2023. Results: For the 2014-2015 through the 2018-2019 seasons, influenza was associated with an average of 15654 (95% CI (13013,18340)) deaths, while between week 33, 2022 through week 12, 2023, we estimated 7851 (5213,10463) influenza-associated deaths and 32607 (20794,44496) SARS-CoV-2 associated deaths. The number of SARS-CoV-2-associated deaths during the Omicron epidemic was significantly higher than the number of deaths with COVID-19 listed on the death certificate or the hospitalization record; for example, between weeks 33-52 in 2022, we estimated 23983 (15307,32620) SARS-CoV-2-associated deaths in France, compared with 12811 deaths with COVID-19 listed on the death certificate, and 8639 in-hospital deaths with COVID-19 during the same period. Examination of US mortality data suggests a significant contribution of Omicron infections to mortality for cardiac disease and mental/behavioral disorders with COVID-19 not listed on the death certificate. Conclusions: Our results suggest the need for boosting influenza vaccination coverage in different population groups (including healthcare workers, particularly nurse assistants for whom influenza vaccination coverage rates in France are low), as well as for wider use of influenza antiviral medications in influenza-related respiratory hospitalizations with different diagnoses (including pneumonia). Wider detection and treatment of Omicron infections, particularly in older individuals/persons with underlying health conditions such as cardiac disease and mental/behavioral disorders, and wider use of bivalent COVID-19 boosters would be needed in the event of the recrudescence of Omicron circulation in France.

There have been big buzzy memoirs published, and cookbooks, and essays. Now, before the overwhelming surge of fall prestige book season, let’s stop and take stock of all the good books the year has brought us so far.

Alex is a sex worker whose quasi-client, quasi-boyfriend, Simon, has thrown her out of his lavish Hamptons beach house. The problem is, Simon is currently Alex’s only client; at 22, she’s finding the rest of her regulars have started to dry up. She’s in debt, and she needs him. So she decides to make her own way in the Hamptons for a week and then see if Simon softens up toward her. But in the gated communities Simon frequents, it’s not that easy to be a guest.

Alex is a creature of instinct who never seems to quite understand what she’s doing, but in Cline’s precise, elegant prose, we can see how heavily Alex bears the burden of being a woman with no needs of her own.

Fisher classic <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2020/3/23/21181700/coronavirus-how-to-cook-a-wolf-mfk-fisher"><em>How to Cook a Wolf</em></a> that focused on solving <a href="https://www.vox.com/videos/2017/5/9/15594598/food-waste-dumbest-environmental">the environmental problem of food waste</a> by using up all your waste ingredients. The end of every meal, Adler argued in her mannered-in-a-good-way prose, should form the beginning of the next: last night’s roast chicken and vegetables should become the bones and the peels that make today’s stock; the stock can enrich the grain bowl that tomorrow will become fried rice.

This year, Adler has published <em>The Everlasting Meal Cookbook</em>, the how-to guide that fleshes out the theory of her last book. You already know that overripe bananas can become banana bread, but Adler is here to tell you that green bananas can become curry or tostones, and banana peels can be dry-fried into thoran.

This is a book that fights for environmentalism with hedonism.

His latest book, <em>The Wager</em>, is about a doomed 18th-century naval voyage spurred on by hubris and ending in violent disaster. If it doesn’t read quite like it’s ready to be a Scorsese flick, that’s because there’s so much there that I want it to get adapted into a prestige TV miniseries instead.

The British warship the Wager sails out of London in 1740 under the absurdly named War of Jenkins’ Ear. It was a clash of colonial forces, with Spain and England grappling for control of the New World. The Wager’s mission was to make its way south, down across the hellish and near-impassible Cape Horn below the southernmost tip of South America, and then back up north to the coast of Chile. There it would capture a Spanish galleon loaded with gold.

One of Grann’s great strengths is his ability to toggle between narrative scales. He also never lets us forget that the whole disaster was sparked by imperial greed, and that the colonial striving of Britain and Spain would lead to many more disasters like it.

The 100-degree-plus temperatures are a function of normal summer weather on top of unusual atmospheric patterns and global temperature cycles aligning in their hot phases. The southern US also has some unique features that are enhancing the heat. All the while, the planet as a whole is warming up.

Heat waves are also <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-13/heat-scorches-europe-as-southern-spain-temperature-to-reach-45c-this-month#xj4y7vzkg">baking other parts of the world</a>, and many places have already <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/08/asia/heat-wave-siberia-climate-intl/index.html">broken temperature records</a> before summer is in full swing. Some of the drivers behind this weather are going to gather strength through the year, so 2023 is poised to become the hottest year on record for the planet.

How the jet stream is fueling the extreme heat
|
||||

Heat waves are typically defined as sustained temperatures above the 95th percentile for a region. That means that the temperatures that count as a heat wave are lower in Alaska than they are in Arkansas. “Keep in mind, it’s always hot in south Louisiana in the summer,” <a href="https://lsu.edu/ga/people/faculty/barry-d-keim/">Barry Keim</a>, Louisiana’s state climatologist and a professor at Louisiana State University, told Vox.

Stretches of excessive heat usually follow a formula: A high-pressure system — where atmospheric pressure above an area increases — creates a column of air that heats up and dries out as it sinks. This drives clouds away, allowing the sun to heat up the ground unobstructed, with the sinking air acting as a heat dome holding the hot air in place over several days.
|
||||

But there are several other variables amplifying this formula right now. One of them is the <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/jetstream/global/jet-stream">jet stream</a>, or rather, jet streams. These are bands of air currents blowing west to east at 275 miles per hour or more, gusting 4 to 8 miles above the Earth’s surface. They usually form circles around the planet and act as boundaries between warm and cold air in the sky. In the Northern Hemisphere, the main streams are the polar jet, ensconcing cold air at the North Pole, and the subtropical jet, holding warm equatorial air at bay. However, the streams can meander and blur together. “If you look at any particular day, it’s not always clear that there’s two distinct streams,” <a href="https://www.eoas.ubc.ca/people/rachelwhite">Rachel White</a>, an atmospheric scientist at the University of British Columbia, told Vox.

These undulations are known as <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/rossby-wave.html">Rossby waves</a>. Right now, the jet streams appear to be following a roller coaster track over North America rather than neat, straight lines. “It’s more ‘wave’ than ‘jet’ right now,” White said.
|

In particular, there appears to be a northward bulge in the jet stream extending over the southern US. That’s holding a high-pressure system in place. “When that pattern persists over the same region for a period of days, that’s how you get a heat wave,” <a href="http://www.met.psu.edu/people/sas405">Steve Seman</a>, an assistant teaching professor at Pennsylvania State University, said.

“Under the ridge, where we are, we’ve had the heat. So in that sense, the jet stream is responsible for our weather, but at the same time responsible for the cooler weather on either side,” <a href="https://atmo.tamu.edu/people/profiles/faculty/nielsen-gammonjohn.html">John Nielsen-Gammon</a>, the Texas state climatologist and a professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University, told Vox. “If we just had high pressure extending across all of the southern US, we wouldn’t have gotten the high temperatures that we saw, because the more localized ridge produces a stronger sinking of air and also allows for the clockwise recirculation of air.”

But right along that ridge, there’s a lot of rollicking weather. The rushing jet stream can draw air and moisture upward, fueling <a href="https://www.rmets.org/metmatters/what-are-convective-storms">convective storms</a>. “Those areas have been very active with storm activity: Tornadoes, high winds, wind damage, and hail have taken place,” Keim said. “Every place to the south of that boundary is basking in very high heat and humidity levels.”

When the heat index gets too high, the weather can quickly become dangerous to many people.

Last month, two groups that work on issues related to animal agriculture — Sentient Media and Faunalytics — published an <a href="https://osf.io/q4evn">analysis</a> with similar findings. The organizations looked at the 100 most recent climate change stories from each of the top 10 US media outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and CNN, and found that 7 percent mentioned animal agriculture. Of that 7 percent, most only discussed how climate change-fueled weather events like droughts, floods, and heatwaves impact animal farmers. “Across the 1,000 articles we examined, only a handful of stories reported in depth on the connection between consuming animal products and climate change,” the researchers wrote.

The media is an easy target, and some criticism is deserved — it’s a disservice to readers to largely ignore a leading cause of the climate crisis. Part of the problem is that the media, like everyone else, operates in an information environment in which the meat lobby downplays and in some cases suppresses the full extent to which burgers, ribs, and chicken nuggets pollute the planet. But journalists could be doing more to cut through the noise.

Estimates vary, but peer-reviewed research says that animal agriculture causes between <a href="https://thebreakthrough.org/issues/food-agriculture-environment/livestock-dont-contribute-14-5-of-global-greenhouse-gas-emissions">15 percent to 19.6 percent</a> of climate-warming emissions. The United Nations’ most recent estimate puts animal agriculture’s emissions at 11.1 percent, but it hasn’t been peer-reviewed and has been <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23738600/un-fao-meat-dairy-livestock-emissions-methane-climate-change">questioned</a> by some food and climate researchers.

For example, in recent years the beef industry has promoted a misleading method of counting the warming impact of methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas emitted by cows. “It’s the [beef] industry choosing metrics which make their impact look small,” Drew Shindell, a professor of Earth science at Duke University, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-10-19/beef-industry-falsely-claims-low-cow-carbon-footprint">told Bloomberg</a> about the industry’s alternative math. “It’s not a credible way to approach the problem.”

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the industry’s leading lobby group, runs a “climate messaging machine,” food journalist Joe Fassler recently <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/may/03/beef-industry-public-relations-messaging-machine">wrote</a> in the Guardian, that trains influencers to confuse the public and downplay beef’s emissions.

The list goes on. Last year, leaked documents showed that delegates from Brazil and Argentina <a href="https://qz.com/ipcc-report-on-climate-change-meat-industry-1850261179">successfully lobbied</a> the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to remove any mention of meat’s negative impact on the environment, or recommendations for people in rich countries to reduce their meat consumption, in its recent report. Meat giant Tyson Foods spends a much bigger share of its revenue than ExxonMobil lobbying Congress to <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/22379909/big-meat-companies-spend-millions-lobbying-climate">stop climate policy</a>.

Outside the <a href="https://www.vox.com/animal-welfare">animal rights</a> movement, there aren’t many voices pushing back against these narratives. The US environmental movement has largely <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/briankateman/2019/09/18/why-some-environmentalists-still-fail-to-promote-meat-reduction-as-an-answer-to-the-climate-crisis/?sh=483aa4be6453">shied away</a> from campaigning to reduce meat and dairy production, with some leaders <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/159153/climate-change-dismiss-meat-emissions-wrong">outright rejecting</a> the notion that we need to eat fewer animals. Policymakers <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2023.1021013/full">largely avoid</a> the issue too.

It’s no wonder that public health researchers, in a <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/14/19/12083">paper</a> published last year in the journal <em>Sustainability</em>, found that the media often engages in “both-sidesism” on meat’s role in climate change, treating it as more of an open debate than it really is.
|
||||

There’s also a human element at play. Food is a touchy subject, and telling people to change what they eat can turn some readers hostile. “Ask me how I know,” said Tamar Haspel, a food and agriculture columnist for the Washington Post who regularly encourages people to eat less beef and more lentils, during a recent Sentient Media panel discussion.

That last part is true — people love to eat meat. But it’s on journalists and environmentalists to be clear-eyed about the realities of the climate crisis, and cover ideas — changing diets, yes, but also government food policy and farming practices and technologies — to try and get us out of it.

Given recent newsroom closures and mass reporter layoffs, news outlets aren’t likely to be hiring scores of reporters specializing in agriculture and the environment anytime soon. But there is something any newsroom can do: treat agriculture and climate change with the same level of skepticism and nuance as any other issue. There are plenty of examples in recent memory in which journalists haven’t.

For example, President Joe Biden’s landmark climate legislation, the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2022/8/8/23296951/inflation-reduction-act-biden-democrats-climate-change">Inflation Reduction Act</a>, included $20 billion for “climate-smart” farming, but there’s <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/167267/climate-farming-inflation-reduction-act">scant evidence</a> that the IRA’s agricultural initiatives will meaningfully reduce emissions, especially since they don’t touch <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2022/8/13/23301768/inflation-reduction-act-agriculture-meat-dairy-farming-plant-based">emissions from livestock</a>. Despite the limits of the legislation, most mentions of the agriculture component of the law <a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-science-health-us-department-of-agriculture-efdd10e289a23151d720f18865daef21">received</a> <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/sustainable-business/us-climate-deal-has-money-evs-clean-energy-even-big-oil-2022-08-08/">little</a> <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2022/08/14/nature-climate-solutions-inflation-reduction-act/">to no</a> <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/08/13/upshot/whats-in-the-democrats-climate-health-bill.html">scrutiny</a> in <a href="https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2022-08-19/democrats-inflation-reduction-act-midterms">initial</a> news coverage.

Many headlines have framed “regenerative agriculture” — an approach to farming that aims, among other aspirations, to store carbon in the soil — as something that could “save the planet.” But its carbon-storing potential <a href="https://www.wri.org/insights/regenerative-agriculture-good-soil-health-limited-potential-mitigate-climate-change">remains</a> <a href="https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/2022-2-summer/feature/dirt-first-carbon-farming-regenerative-agriculture">speculative</a>, and regenerative agriculture generally requires <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/food/2022/10/03/beef-soil-carbon-sequestration/">much</a> <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5831153/">more land</a> than conventional farming, an <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-018-0757-z">environmental drawback</a>.

Most products are still <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2023/4/17/23682232/impossible-beyond-plant-based-meat-sales">too expensive</a> and don’t <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23065941/vegan-vegetarian-plant-based-food-tech-bad-products">taste good enough</a>.

On top of applying healthy skepticism to claims made in the food and agriculture sphere, journalists could also be more specific by naming <em>animal</em> agriculture as the top cause for an environmental problem when appropriate, not agriculture writ large. For example, “agriculture” is sometimes cited as a major cause of the Colorado River water shortage, which could lead readers to think that the current sky-high levels of water use for agriculture in the Western US are just an inevitable part of feeding the world. But <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/23655640/colorado-river-water-alfalfa-dairy-beef-meat">at least 70 percent</a> of the water diverted from the Colorado River for agriculture is used to grow feed for beef and dairy cows, and animal products generally require <a href="https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/water-withdrawals-per-kg-poore">much more water</a> than plant-based foods.

Covering this huge, complex issue with skepticism and nuance requires time, resources, and specialization, all luxuries many reporters don’t have. The problem is a symptom of bigger challenges in journalism.

To be sure, in addition to journalists quoted in this article, there are a number of <a href="https://newrepublic.com/tags/meat-industry">news</a> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/series/animals-farmed">outlets</a>, non-profits, and <a href="https://www.jennysplitter.com/">writers</a> that <a href="https://www.andrewwasley.com/">regularly</a> <a href="https://muckrack.com/spencer-roberts/articles">report</a> on how <a href="https://civileats.com/">what we eat</a> contributes to <a href="https://www.desmog.com/">climate change</a>. But an enormous coverage gap remains. It may just take time for stakeholders in the climate crisis — journalists, policymakers, environmentalists, and consumers — to catch up.

Dad takes a second to process this, then speaks. “Uh, ok, then this is what I want you to do. Put the phone down on the table, run upstairs, knock on the bedroom door and shout to mommy that daddy’s car just pulled into the driveway.”

They thought they should go to college to get ahead. The first goes in to see the counselor, who tells him to take Math, History, and Logic. “What’s Logic?” the first redneck asks. The professor answers by saying, “Let me give you an example. Do you own a weedeater?” “I sure do.” “Then I can assume, using logic, that you have a yard,” replied the professor. “That’s real good!” says the redneck. The professor continues, “Logic will also tell me that since you have a yard, you also own a house.” Impressed, the redneck says, “Amazin!” “And since you own a house, logic dictates that you have a wife.” “That’s Betty Mae! This is incredible!” The redneck is obviously catching on. “Finally, since you have a wife, logically I can assume that you are heterosexual,” said the professor. “You’re absolutely right! Why that’s the most fascinatin’ thing I ever heard! I cain’t wait to take that logic class!!” The redneck, proud of the new world opening up to him, walks back into the hallway, where his friend is still waiting. “So what classes are ya takin’?” asks the friend. “Math, History, and Logic!” replies the first redneck. “What in tarnation is logic???” asked his friend. “Let me give you an example. Do ya own a weedeater?” asked the first redneck. “No,” his friend replied. “SO YOU LIKE GUYS, Don t Ya ?”
