<li><strong>Unrestricted versus Regulated Open Data Governance: A Bibliometric Comparison of SARS-CoV-2 Nucleotide Sequence Databases</strong> -

Two distinct modes of data governance have emerged in accessing and reusing viral data pertaining to COVID-19: an unrestricted model, espoused by data repositories part of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration and a regulated model promoted by the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza data. In this paper, we focus on publications mentioning either infrastructure in the period between January 2020 and January 2023, thus capturing a period of acute response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a variety of bibliometric and network science methods, we compare the extent to which either data infrastructure facilitated collaboration from different countries around the globe to understand how data reuse can enhance forms of diversity between institutions, countries, and funding groups. Our findings reveal disparities in representation and usage between the two data infrastructures. We conclude that both approaches offer useful lessons, with the unrestricted model providing insights into complex data linkage and the regulated model demonstrating the importance of global representation.

<li><strong>Can we rely on trust in science to beat the COVID-19 pandemic?</strong> -

In order to provide time critical information on the social determinants of health during the COVID-19 pandemic, we relate levels of trust in science with government responses to the pandemic and the extent to which populations reduced mobility, a measure identified by epidemiologists as critical to halt the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. We used data from the 2018 Wellcome Global Monitor to develop a comparable index of trust in science across 144 countries using confirmatory analysis models for categorical data (often referred as Item Response Models) with alignment optimisation. We use this index to provide evidence on the association between trust in science, country level mobility changes following the COVID-19 pandemic and the stringency of regulations to halt COVID-19 spread. We find that trust in science was highest in Nordic European countries, among individuals with high educational attainment and income. Differences by religiosity, gender and residency were less pronounced. Countries where individuals trust science the most enacted less stringent regulations in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic than countries where individuals trust science the least. Irrespective of country-specific trust in science, behaviors such as mobility reductions changed the most in countries with more stringent regulations. Stringent regulations were associated with large reductions in mobility irrespective of levels of trust in science. By contrast, where regulations were less stringent, mobility decreased more in countries with lower levels of trust in science. Many governments are considering relaxing regulations that were put in place following the rapid surge of cases and deaths and the risk that health care systems would be overwhelmed. At the country level, higher levels of trust in science appear to be associated with less voluntary adoption of behaviors that could reduce transmission, such as mobility reductions.

<li><strong>The impact of COVID-19 on physical activity and mental health: A mixed-methods approach</strong> -

The global COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted peoples physical and mental health, and studies on ways to support people are scarce. This mixed-methods study investigated how and why physical activity (PA), anxiety, depression and self-perceived loneliness are related, and the feasibility of social prescribing in supporting individuals. Data from the UCL-Penn Global COVID Study wave 1 (17 April 17 July 2020, N = 1,037) were analysed. Twenty-one UK adults who self-identified as low (n = 15) and high (n = 6) on PA at wave 1 were interviewed at wave 4 (18 March 1 August 2022). At wave 1, depression was associated with higher odds of low-PA (OR = 1.05; 95% CI 1.01-1.10, p = .02). Both high/low-PA groups cited the threat of contracting coronavirus, general impacts of COVID-19 policies and heightened awareness of the mind-body connection. Findings detail practical and emotional challenges in engaging with social prescribing through clinical settings.

<li><strong>Influenza sequence validation and annotation using VADR</strong> -

Tens of thousands of influenza sequences are deposited into the GenBank database each year. The software tool FLAN has been used by GenBank since 2007 to validate and annotate incoming influenza sequence submissions, and has been publicly available as a webserver but not as a standalone tool. VADR is a general sequence validation and annotation software package used by GenBank for Norovirus, Dengue virus and SARS-CoV-2 virus sequence processing that is available as a standalone tool. We have created VADR influenza models based on the FLAN reference sequences and adapted VADR to accurately annotate influenza sequences. VADR and FLAN show consistent results on the vast majority of influenza sequences, and when they disagree VADR is usually correct. VADR can also accurately process influenza D sequences as well as influenza A H17, H18, H19, N10 and N11 subtype sequences, which FLAN cannot. VADR 1.6.3 and the associated influenza models are now freely available for users to download and use.

<li><strong>System and transcript dynamics of cells infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)</strong> -

Statistical laws arise in many complex systems and can be explored to gain insights into their structure and behavior. Here, we investigate the dynamics of cells infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) at the system and individual gene levels; and demonstrate that the statistical frameworks used here are robust in spite of the technical noise associated with single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. A biphasic fit to Taylor's power law was observed, and it is likely associated with the larger sampling noise inherent to the measure of less expressed genes. The type of the distribution of the system, as assessed by Taylor's parameters, varies along the course of infection in a cell type-dependent manner, but also sampling noise had a significant influence on Taylor's parameters. At the individual gene level, we found that genes that displayed signals of punctual rank stability and/or long-range dependence behavior, as measured by Hurst exponents, were associated with translation, cellular respiration, apoptosis, protein-folding, virus processes, and immune response.

<li><strong>A human commons cell atlas reveals cell type specificity for OAS1 isoforms</strong> -

We describe an open source Human Commons Cell Atlas comprising 2.9 million cells across 27 tissues that can be easily updated and that is structured to facilitate custom analyses. To showcase the flexibility of the atlas, we demonstrate that it can be used to study isoforms of genes at cell resolution. In particular, we study cell type specificity of isoforms of OAS1, which has been shown to offer SARS-CoV-2 protection in certain individuals that display higher expression of the p46 isoform. Using our commons cell atlas we localize the OAS1 p44b isoform to the testis, and find that it is specific to round and elongating spermatids. By virtue of enabling customized analyses via a modular and dynamic atlas structure, the commons cell atlas should be useful for exploratory analyses that are intractable within the rigid framework of current gene-centric cell atlases.

<li><strong>Do abortion bans somehow save pregnant peoples lives? A cautionary research note on trends in maternal death post-Dobbs</strong> -

The National Center for Health Statistics published provisional monthly estimates of maternal death (12-month ending counts) appear to demonstrate that the end of federal protection for abortion rights in June 2022 was associated with an immediate and dramatic decline in maternal deaths. In this research note we investigate this apparent association by comparing the 12-month ending counts with monthly counts of maternal death. We decompose change in the 12-month ending counts into change due to months leaving the sum and change due to the current month entering the sum and conclude that the rapid decline in the 12-month ending counts is driven by events in 2021, specifically the shock to maternal deaths during the Delta and Omicron waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Actual monthly final and provisional maternal deaths from the National Vital Statistics Surveillance System did not decline after June 2022. We caution that any analysis of change in maternal deaths should exercise extreme caution when using summed measures in general and the 12-month ending counts in particular.

<li><strong>Online Data Collection in Applied Linguistics</strong> -

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers became resourceful and many transitioned to online methods for remote data collection, suddenly bringing many platforms and methods to prominence in new experimental contexts. As in-person data collection resumed, online data collection remained as these methods have proven particularly useful in the field of applied linguistics and especially Second Language Acquisition (SLA), which often requires researchers to recruit participants who are inherently difficult to find (e.g., individuals proficient in less-commonly taught languages or living in a context far from the researchers university). In this chapter, we highlight factors that researchers should consider when implementing online research along with a high-level troubleshooting guide. We cover recruitment, enhancing participant performance, implementation, and deployment. Within these topics, we highlight important technological, procedural, and participant privacy recommendations for visual, aural, and oral online data collection designs specially tailored for applied linguists.

<li><strong>Identification of Novel Allosteric Sites of SARS-CoV-2 Papain-Like Protease (PLpro) for the Development of COVID-19 Antivirals</strong> -

Coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-2 encode a conserved papain-like protease (PLpro) that is crucial for viral replication and immune evasion, making it a prime target for antiviral drug development. In this study, three surface pockets on SARS-CoV-2 PLpro that may function as sites for allosteric inhibition were computationally identified. To evaluate the effects of these pockets on proteolytic activity, 52 residues were separately mutated to alanine. In Pocket 1, located between the Ubl and thumb domains, the introduction of alanine at T10, D12, T54, Y72, or Y83 reduced PLpro activity to &lt;12% of that of WT. In Pocket 2, situated at the interface of the thumb, fingers, and palm domains, Q237A, S239A, H275A, and S278A inactivated PLpro. Finally, introducing alanine at five residues in Pocket 3, between the fingers and palm domains, inactivated PLpro: S212, Y213, Y251, K254, and Y305. Pocket 1 has a higher druggability score than Pockets 2 and 3. MD simulations showed that interactions within and between domains play critical roles in PLpro activity and thermal stability. The essential residues in Pockets 1 and 2 participate in a combination of intra- and inter-domain interactions. By contrast, the essential residues in Pocket 3 predominantly participate in inter-domain interactions. The most promising targets for therapeutic development are Pockets 1 and 3, which have the highest druggability score and the largest number of essential residues, respectively. Non-competitive inhibitors targeting these pockets may be antiviral agents against COVID-19 and related coronaviruses.

<li><strong>Neural networks built from enzymatic reactions can operate as linear and nonlinear classifiers</strong> -

The engineering of molecular programs capable of processing patterns of multi-input biomarkers holds great potential in applications ranging from in vitro diagnostics (e.g., viral detection, including COVID-19) to therapeutic interventions (e.g., discriminating cancer cells from normal cells). For this reason, mechanisms to design molecular networks for pattern recognition are highly sought after. In this work, we explore how enzymatic networks can be used for both linear and nonlinear classification tasks. By leveraging steady-state analysis and showing global stability, we demonstrate that these networks can function as molecular perceptrons, fundamental units of artificial neural networks-capable of processing multiple inputs associated with positive and negative weights to achieve linear classification. Furthermore, by composing orthogonal enzymatic reactions, we show that multi-layer networks can be constructed to achieve nonlinear classification.

<li><strong>Neutralisation sensitivity of the SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.87.1 variant</strong> -

Against the backdrop of the rapid global takeover and dominance of BA.1/BA.2 and subsequently BA.2.86 lineages, the emergence of a highly divergent SARS-CoV-2 variant warrants characterization and close monitoring. Recently, another such BA.2 descendent, designated BA.2.87.1, was detected in South Africa. Here, we show using spike-pseudotyped viruses that BA.2.87.1 is less resistant to neutralisation by prevailing antibody responses in Sweden than other currently circulating variants such as JN.1. Further we show that a monovalent XBB.1.5-adapted booster enhanced neutralising antibody titers to BA.2.87.1 by almost 4-fold. While BA.2.87.1 may not outcompete other currently-circulating lineages, the repeated emergence and transmission of highly diverged variants suggests that another large antigenic shift, similar to the replacement by Omicron, may be likely in the future.

<li><strong>Design of Antigen-Specific Antibody CDRH3 Sequences Using AI and Germline-Based Templates</strong> -
<div>
Antibody-antigen specificity is engendered and refined through a number of complex B cell processes, including germline gene recombination and somatic hypermutation. Here, we present an AI-based technology for de novo generation of antigen-specific antibody CDRH3 sequences using germline-based templates, and validate this technology through the generation of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. AI-based processes that mimic the outcome, but bypass the complexity of natural antibody generation, can be efficient and effective alternatives to traditional experimental approaches for antibody discovery.

<li><strong>The influence of COVID-19 fear beliefs on the relationships between positive mood and loss-of-control eating: a ten-day diary study</strong> -

Loss-of-control eating (LOCE) is driven by mood, and prevalence increased following onset of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). COVID-19 is associated with many stressors, including fear of illness, which could potentiate a relationship between mood and LOCE. Additionally, daily protective strategies to prevent contagion may be associated with LOCE, in line with ego depletion theory. Adults (N = 108) completed a 10-day diary study regarding LOCE, positive and negative mood, and protective behaviors. Participants rated COVID fear beliefs at a baseline assessment, hypothesized to predict LOCE directly between-subjects and have a cross-level interactive effect within-subjects. Data were analyzed with a multilevel model. Negative mood was associated with LOCE at both levels, although protective behaviors evinced no significant associations. Positive mood lacked significant direct association with LOCE, although there was an interactive effect such that there was an inverse association at low fear beliefs. Directions for future research and clinical implications are discussed.

<li><strong>Bivalent COVID-19 vaccines boost the capacity of pre-existing SARS-CoV-2-specific memory B cells to cross-recognize Omicron subvariants</strong> -

Bivalent COVID-19 vaccines comprising ancestral Wuhan-Hu-1 (WH1) and the Omicron BA.1 or BA.5 subvariant elicit enhanced serum antibody responses to emerging Omicron subvariants. We characterized the memory B-cell (Bmem) response following a fourth dose with a BA.1 or BA.5 bivalent vaccine, and compared the immunogenicity with a WH1 monovalent fourth dose. Healthcare workers previously immunized with mRNA or adenoviral vector monovalent vaccines were sampled before and one-month after a monovalent, BA.1 or BA.5 bivalent fourth dose COVID-19 vaccine. RBD-specific Bmem were quantified with an in-depth spectral flow cytometry panel including recombinant RBD proteins of the WH1, BA.1, BA.5, BQ.1.1, and XBB.1.5 variants. All recipients had slightly increased WH1 RBD-specific Bmem numbers. Recognition of Omicron subvariants was not enhanced following monovalent vaccination, while both bivalent vaccines significantly increased WH1 RBD-specific Bmem cross-recognition of all Omicron subvariants tested by flow cytometry. Thus, Omicron-based bivalent vaccines can improve recognition of descendent Omicron subvariants by pre-existing, WH1-specific Bmem, beyond that of a conventional, monovalent vaccine. This provides new insights into the capacity of variant-based mRNA booster vaccines to improve immune memory against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.

<li><strong>Power users: Technology and Canadian sex workers during COVID-19</strong> -

The transition from physical to online advertising by sex workers in Canada has been well documented. However, few studies use rigorous sampling methods. This study considers how a technically sophisticated group of advertisers from a large Canadian sex work classifieds site used multiple online resources to promote or provide services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Advertisers qualified for the study if they used a URL as part of their contact information and were actively advertising between August 23 and September 22, 2022. A random sample of 1000 qualifying advertisers were selected of which 783 had accessible contact URLs. Themes were identified in downloaded website texts using grounded theory analysis. Ad metadata was used to identify demographic and behavioral distinctions between the sample and other advertisers. Almost all sampled advertisers (99%) provided in person services and most (70%) provided online services. The sample advertised more frequently, were more affluent and were more likely to be Anglophone, White, trans-female, or provide BDSM services. Themes of security, health, identity, and social networks were identified. Advertisers emphasized physical, emotional, and financial security. Most workers did not work in isolation and many participated in extensive social networks.

What do the words “loo,” “condo,” “haw,” “hero” have in common? Unless youre extremely into ornithology, its impressive if you were able to pick out the fact that if you added another letter to each of them, youd spell the name of a bird. But if youre a regular player of the New York Times game <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/games/connections">Connections</a>, these four words have another significance: They make up one of the puzzles most notoriously tricky categories of all time.

Connections — an often frustrating but integral addition to a morning routine that might also include the Timess daily crossword, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/index.html">Wordle</a>, and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/puzzles/spelling-bee">Spelling Bee</a>, or offshoots like the geography quiz <a href="https://worldle.teuteuf.fr/">Worldle</a> and the GDP guesser <a href="https://games.oec.world/en/tradle/">Tradle</a> — debuted last summer. Over the past nine months, its become the second-most played game at the Times, after Wordle, but its captured social media in a way that a simple five-letter word-of-the-day puzzle never could.

Connections is played like so: There is a four-by-four grid, and each box has a word in it. Your job is to group them into sets of four that make sense on levels that go from easy (say, synonyms or simply defined categories) to difficult (the bird one). When submitted, the easiest group will show up in yellow, the second-easiest in green, the second-hardest in blue, and the hardest in purple.

You can see how this might make people feel angry or, as one woman <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@am_burger_/video/7348035219720555806?q=nyt%20connections&amp;t=1710945491182">posted on TikTok</a>, like shes “immediately ready to fight” the games editor. Thats because Connections, even more so than crosswords, whose difficulty ratings are usually made clear from the outset, or Wordle, which relies heavily on luck, has the unique ability to make people feel either really, really smart or really, really stupid.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="sQel2U">
In a post titled “<a href="https://www.raphkoster.com/2023/09/02/why-nyts-connections-makes-you-feel-bad/">Why NYTs Connections makes you feel bad</a>,” game designer Raph Koster suggests Connections is “fundamentally elitist” because it requires players to have a broad education to find possible categories, and then punishes them for making guesses (players have only four tries before they fail the game). Some puzzles may be easier for certain folks — in order to know that “emerald,” “radiant,” “princess,” and “baguette” go together, youve got to have some knowledge of jewelry — and be extra difficult for those frustrated by potential overlap.

One recent puzzle included five answers that could work for the yellow (easiest) category, “seen at a sports stadium”: “astroturf,” “jumbotron,” “scoreboard,” “skybox,” and “kisscam.” Only the last one works for the purple (hardest) one, which was “starting with rock bands.” But theres no way to tell whether a puzzle will be easy or hard until youre playing it — thereby leading to the kind of near-conspiratorial thinking and Connections shaming on Reddit, Twitter, and TikTok. <a href="https://twitter.com/starkeysfilm/status/1761727792541315264">Complaining</a> on Twitter about how hard that days Connections was is a risk in itself, and it more often than not ends with other people smugly commenting how “<a href="https://twitter.com/fvigeland/status/1762316507801907578">maybe word games arent for you</a>” and posting memes that tell the poster to “<a href="https://twitter.com/lilgrapefruits/status/1762511275584881036">take your sensitive ass back to Wordle</a>!” They do have a point, however: The point of doing puzzles <a href="https://twitter.com/smhrbst/status/1770838586616578430">is to feel puzzled</a>.

According to Everdeen Mason, the editorial director of the Timess Games section, these theories about Connections suddenly “getting harder” based on social media discourse are both hilarious and wrong — mostly. “We see everything, and we think pretty much all of it is funny,” she says of the people livestreaming their games and teasing each other over their results. “Connections in particular has felt really special, in part because of TikTok. I dont know that any of our other games have really taken off in the same way. The game itself is pretty witty, and people can feel that and want to riff on it. It just makes it really memeable.”

She points to the bird category and another purple set in February made of words beginning with instruments (“bassinet,” “cellophane,” “harpoon,” “organism”) as particularly frustrating for solvers. Of course, the frustration is part of the fun, and its why Connections was an immediate hit from its 90-day beta release last summer. Its full release, however, caused a small controversy because of its similarities to the British quiz show <em>Only Connect, </em>which also asks contestants to group a grid of 16 words into four sets of four. The games host, Victoria Coren, responded to the launch of Connections on Twitter, <a href="https://twitter.com/VictoriaCoren/status/1668765486056718339">asking</a>, “Do you know this has been a TV show in the UK since 2008?! Its so similar I guess you must do?” The Times <a href="https://deadline.com/2023/06/bbc-victoria-coren-mitchell-accuses-new-york-times-clone-only-connect-1235417841/">has denied</a> copying the format.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="yyeKtt">
Connections is also, crucially, much easier to solve than <em>Only Connect</em>s grids, and audiences got obsessed quickly. Its a similar story to Wordle, which debuted in 2021 and went viral in 2022, its characteristic colored block emojis making for the perfect shareable signature. More than that, <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/22891192/wordle-game-what-is-wordle-why-is-it-so-popular-how-to-play">Wordle avoids a common problem</a> with games — playing too much too quickly and burning out — by only releasing a single game per day, which is also the model Connections and Spelling Bee use. None of these games has the power to take over your whole life in the way that, say, a super engrossing new video game might. And even though youre technically only in competition with yourself, theyre fundamentally social games: Grids and scores are easily shareable online and make for solid conversation starters with pretty much anyone.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="bfpL0Y">
Liu has responded to the conversations on TikTok by <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@mynytimes/video/7348084079247576363?q=nyt%20connections&amp;t=1710945491182">posting her tips</a> on how to play. Most importantly, she says, dont guess unless youre pretty sure you have a category. Second, look for words that dont belong anywhere else. Last, think flexibly — “my job here is to trick you,” she says.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="sp8Z3P">
Games have been a hugely successful bet for the Times. The company <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/01/29/wordle-nyt-games-news-media-layoffs">told Axios</a> that its puzzles, which were played more than 8 billion times in 2023 (including 2.3 billion Connections successes), have contributed to subscriber growth in a tough media market. Up next: a word search called Strands thats currently in beta mode. Judging from the discourse its <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/search?q=nytstrands%20&amp;t=1711400150207">already sparked online</a>, it seems to be yet another puzzle for solvers to argue about in comments sections and Reddit threads. In other words, a hit.

Though the New York Times debuted and then shuttered the math game Digits last year, something about word games seems to stick. “Its our main medium of communication,” Mason says. “They make people feel engaged and intelligent, but theyre also accessible. You can take something away: a new vocab word, a new perspective, new connections between things.” Personally, Ill never look at the word “kisscam” in the same way again.

If you somehow havent heard: Beyoncés <a href="https://pitchfork.com/news/beyonce-reveals-cowboy-carter-artwork-shares-statement-on-new-album/"><em>Cowboy Carter</em></a>, her eighth studio album and the much-anticipated sequel to <a href="https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/beyonce-renaissance/"><em>Renaissance</em></a>, drops on Friday. Its lead single <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=238Z4YaAr1g">“Texas Hold Em”</a> made history when it <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/beyonce-texas-hold-em-number-1-hot-country-songs-chart-1235610582/">debuted</a> at the top of the country charts last month.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="OO52EZ">
“I feel honored to be the first Black woman with the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart,” Beyoncé wrote in an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C4s6Zr7rlwA/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">Instagram post</a> last week.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="G8lHF9">
With this album, shes not just racking up downloads and inspiring <a href="https://www.vox.com/tiktok">TikTok</a> dances, shes also drawing attention to the whitewashing of a genre that has long silenced its Black voices — and, predictably, drawing <a href="https://www.billboard.com/culture/tv-film/rhiannon-giddens-beyonce-cowboy-carter-slams-backlash-1235638538/">backlash</a> from country music gatekeepers.
</p>
<h3 id="jDCj3r">
The century of Black country that led to <em>Cowboy Carter</em>
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="VR0WVr">
For over a century, Black artists have been central to country music — and for just as long, their work has been overlooked or undercompensated by the predominantly white country music establishment.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="VbbgrE">
Just ask songwriter, educator, and New York Times bestselling novelist Alice Randall. Shes the first Black woman to co-write a No. 1 country song, with Trisha Yearwoods 1995 hit <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT50v7GVGi8">“XXXs and OOOs,”</a> and has written many other country hits … all of which were performed by white artists.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="avHwSX">
“I thought I was going to retire from country and never see” the day a Black woman would hit the top of the charts, she told Vox.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ASt0br">
Randall, who teaches about the Black roots of country music and has <a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/My-Black-Country/Alice-Randall/9781668018408">a book coming out on the subject</a>, told <a href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/7uTJmYpVcQzBU20estJ0R6?si=uCMCSggzQjSXMQy84T6VeA"><em>Today, Explained</em> host Noel King</a> that Beyoncés success was an effort nearly a century in the making.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="qOklfV">
Lets dig into some of that centurys highlights!

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="yM4klc">

Despite Baileys popularity, he <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/tennessee/articles/2023-05-18/nashville-to-name-street-after-harmonica-wizard-opry-founder-deford-bailey">endured racism</a> while touring the Jim Crow South with white Opry performers.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="EhaEPl">
“DeFord was able to defy and evade the structural obstacles created to keep his voice off the radio and to keep him out of the public. But he never did have the same opportunities that his white contemporaries had,” Randall said.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="n9KUbH">
The next great to know, she says, would be Memphis-born Black pianist, Lil Hardin Armstrong, for playing on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ieq5bzQuo-s">“Blue Yodel #9”</a> with her husband Louis Armstrong on trumpet and Jimmie Rodgers on vocals. Only, at the time, you wouldnt have known either Armstrong was behind the work: Only Rodgerss name was put on the 1930 record, and many listeners considered it a white song.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="wBCKPV">
“Often they took the exact same recording and marketed it, one to a white audience and one to a Black audience, sometimes changing the name of the group,” Randall said. “Theres a lot of cultural redlining that is actually separating things that are not intrinsically separate.”

Then in the 1960s and 70s, Black country stars tried to make their mark — with differing levels of success.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="RIhAQF">
Charley Pride became a breakout country superstar with 52 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. He had a remarkable rise from a Negro Leagues baseball player to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPAPsDr2Vp8">appearing at the Grand Ole Opry</a> in 1967 (the first Black performer to grace its stage since DeFord Baileys last appearance in 1941) to winning Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="N0EnZk">
But when Prides debut album was released, the label deliberately omitted any mention of his race and didnt put his face on the cover.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="mYNihl">
“They wanted people to fall in love with the voice in the records first,” Randall said.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="UW8lyB">
Linda Martell didnt share the same success. Her one and only album, <a href="https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/linda-martel-color-me-country/"><em>Color Me Country</em>,</a> was released in 1970 on Plantation Records, and she was the first Black female country artist to perform at the Opry.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="IdanSA">
“Its an extraordinary album,” Randall said. “Shes on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETQTDgZA9Vo"><em>Hee Haw</em></a>, shes on the Opry, but she never goes incognegro. The very first time she comes out as a Black woman, there just isnt the traction. She experiences myriad micro and macro aggressions navigating Nashville. She is not allowed in this space.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="83uda1">
Randall says Ray Charless 1962 blockbuster record <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgWmP-F0RTPOl1OjguwDkKwjFFiMmQZs5"><em>Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music</em></a> is arguably the most important country album, and certainly the most important Black country album, until this moment.
</p>

“It was constructing and deconstructing country music,” she said — something of a spiritual predecessor to <em>Cowboy Carter</em>.

Black countrys time has come
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="zWLGST">
Black artists have made more inroads into mainstream country music in recent years, but not without challenges.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tCpm0G">
Darius Rucker has won a Grammy and scored 10 No. 1 hits since leaving Hootie and the Blowfish, but <a href="https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/darius-rucker-was-told-people-wouldnt-accept-a-black-country-singer/">was told</a> that audiences “would never accept a Black country singer.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="6p1Esf">
Country fans <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/6/5/18653880/lil-nas-x-country-music-billboard-wrangler-old-town-road">accused</a> “Old Town Road” singer Lil Nas X of “cultural appropriation” for wearing a cowboy hat — even though Black cowboys have a long history in the American West.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="kCJGgD">
Other <a href="https://foxy99.com/listicle/after-beyonce-here-are-other-black-women-in-country/">Black women country musicians</a> with massive songwriting and vocal talents have struggled to break through to mainstream success.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tBk4Ls">
Beyoncé herself weathered backlash after performing <em>Lemonade</em>s boot-stomping country hit “Daddy Lessons” with the Dixie Chicks (now known as The Chicks), at the CMA Awards in 2016.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="QOloZF">
While evolving the genre in her own way, Beyoncé is “preserving and spotlighting past genius, while manifesting her own present genius, and creating a path forward for further innovation,” Randall said.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="7h9nfq">
She links Beyoncés second single off the album, “16 Carriages,” to other iconic country songs: the Carter Familys mournful “Can the Circle Be Unbroken,” Tennessee Ernie Fords rendition of the coal miners lament “Sixteen Tons,” Deana Carters ode to lost innocence in “Strawberry Wine,” and Randalls own “XXXs and OOOs” about the balance between love and money.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="C02jeJ">
“No one again can say a Black woman cant chart. No one again can say — which is a thing that was unfortunately said around town — Bring me the right Black woman, bring me the one thats pretty enough, who sings well enough and has some songs, and well make her a star.’”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Hct7ae">
Instead, Beyonces star power is bringing in audiences outside the typical country fan base “because some music is being served up that is just irresistible.”
</p>

Artificial intelligence is already making people rich. Jensen Huang, the co-founder and CEO of chip company Nvidia, which <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/nvidia-ai-developer-conference-kicks-off-with-new-chips-focus-2024-03-18/#:~:text=Nvidia%20dominates%20the%20data%20center,O)%20%2C%20opens%20new%20tab.">controls 80 percent</a> of the data-center <a href="https://www.vox.com/2023/4/28/23702644/artificial-intelligence-machine-learning-technology">AI</a> chip market, has seen his <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/profiles/jenhsun-huang/">net worth explode</a> from a mere $4 billion five years ago to a staggering $83.1 billion as of March 24 on the back of bottomless demand for his companys product.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="F7nnxi">
ChatGPT maker OpenAI is reportedly valued at <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-17/openai-deal-lets-employees-sell-shares-at-86-billion-valuation?sref=qYiz2hd0">$86 billion</a>, with rivals Anthropic and Inflection at <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/20/technology/anthropic-funding-ai.html">$15 billion</a> and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/inflection-ai-raises-13-bln-funding-microsoft-others-2023-06-29/">$4 billion</a> as of their most recent funding rounds. While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/31/technology/sam-altman-open-ai-chatgpt.html#:~:text=But%20as%20we%20strolled%20across%20his%20ranch%2C%20he%20told%20me%2C%20for%20the%20first%20time%2C%20that%20he%20holds%20no%20stake%20in%20OpenAI">owns no shares</a> in the company, its possible, even likely, that other AI founders and execs have joined the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzMUrB-Um1Y">three commas club</a> by now, at least on paper.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="lXZxUS">
But some researchers think this is only the beginning — that AI wont just make a few techies wildly rich, the way social networking, smartphones, and personal computers did before. Believers in a <a href="https://www.understandingai.org/p/the-case-forand-againstrapid-ai-driven">growth explosion</a> argue that AI is set to make society much, much richer by causing economic growth at a scale it has never experienced before.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="dNavgj">
In 2020, the AI researcher Ajeya Cotra at grant maker Open Philanthropy <a href="https://www.alignmentforum.org/posts/KrJfoZzpSDpnrv9va/draft-report-on-ai-timelines">released a report</a> arguing that AI powerful enough to drive a surge in economic growth to 20 to 30 percent a year is coming, and more likely than not will emerge before 2100. The following year, her colleague Tom Davidson conducted a more <a href="https://www.openphilanthropy.org/research/could-advanced-ai-drive-explosive-economic-growth/">in-depth investigation</a> of the potential for AI to supercharge growth and concluded that per capita economic growth rates as high as 30 percent a year resulting from AI are plausible this century.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="XpnRMj">
This is an extremely “big if true” claim. Since good record-keeping began shortly after World War II, the US <a href="https://apps.bea.gov/iTable/?reqid=19&amp;step=2&amp;isuri=1&amp;categories=survey&amp;_gl=1*uu80nh*_ga*NjYyNjc3MTQwLjE3MTA0NDM2MzI.*_ga_J4698JNNFT*MTcxMDQ0MzYzMS4xLjEuMTcxMDQ0MzY3My4xOC4wLjA.#eyJhcHBpZCI6MTksInN0ZXBzIjpbMSwyLDMsM10sImRhdGEiOltbImNhdGVnb3JpZXMiLCJTdXJ2ZXkiXSxbIk5JUEFfVGFibGVfTGlzdCIsIjEiXSxbIkZpcnN0X1llYXIiLCIxOTQ2Il0sWyJMYXN0X1llYXIiLCIyMDIzIl0sWyJTY2FsZSIsIjAiXSxbIlNlcmllcyIsIlEiXV19">has averaged</a> 3.2 percent economic growth per year. Since 2000, growth has been much more anemic, averaging 2.2 percent. Per capita growth — which is affected by population changes as well as economic ones — has been <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=1ixYf">lower still</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="9utl6Z">
Nowhere before in history — not in <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/british-economic-growth-12701870/gdp-and-gdp-per-head/1C988F71637EE861744FAA5A7CAFAEF0">England during the Industrial Revolution</a>, not in <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/40438274">Japan during its “income doubling” period</a> in the 1960s, not in <a href="https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/20190625_RL33534_088c5467dd11365dd4ab5f72133db289fa10030f.pdf">China in recent decades</a> — has sustained growth on the scale of 20 to 30 percent per year happened. To put that number into perspective, 30 percent growth implies that the <a href="https://www.vox.com/economy">economy</a> would double in size every 2.5 years or so. (Based on current growth levels, the US economy wont double for 35 years.)
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="UsPNSK">
It gets even more impressive when you take a longer view. Northwestern economist Ben Jones has <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jP9Bb6J6BXH5v6EshsPF2NE1GiWatPxUUrK9wDEpTqA/edit#heading=h.sx1v2jfwct7w">noted</a> the typical American today is about 100 times richer than humans were when economic growth began and we were all living at the edge of starvation. In a system of 30 percent growth per capita, in 25 years wed be 1,000 times richer than we are now.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="gOLOEb">
Imagine everything humans have achieved since the days when we lived in caves: wheels, writing, bronze and iron smelting, pyramids and the Great Wall, ocean-traversing ships, mechanical reaping, railroads, telegraphy, electricity, photography, film, recorded music, laundry machines, <a href="https://www.vox.com/tv">television</a>, the internet, cellphones. Now imagine accomplishing 10 times all that — in just a quarter century.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="5ah9d2">
This is a very, very, very strange world were contemplating. Its strange enough that its fair to wonder whether its even possible. Personally, 30 percent growth is so far outside human experience to date that I have trouble even imagining what it might look like.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="OCpDQy">
AI could be just another useful technology, akin to a washing machine. In this view, it makes our lives a little better, like most technological improvements.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="iwg7lR">
But AI could also be something else entirely that would upend the assumptions weve used to understand the world around us for centuries.
</p>
<h3 id="Q0aEyM">
The basic case for a growth explosion
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="XatDNY">
In his 2021 report, Davidson lays out three general arguments for why such a dramatic explosion in economic growth might be possible.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="oQmpjW">
The first argument is historic. In an earlier report for Open Philanthropy, researcher David Roodman looked at the trajectory of the world economy in the <a href="https://www.openphilanthropy.org/research/modeling-the-human-trajectory/">very, very long run</a> — all the way back to 10,000 BCE. He concluded that the pattern of economic growth, examined through this very wide lens, is superexponential. Exponential growth means the economy grows by a steady, compounding rate every year — 2 or 3 percent, say — like interest in your savings account. Superexponential growth means that the growth rate is increasing over time. That, Roodman concludes, is what has in fact happened.

Roodman emphasizes that you should take this with several grains of salt. Its not like we have good data on what the world economy was like in 10,000 BCE. But we do know, with a high degree of confidence, that economic growth was very slow for a very long time and then <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2022/6/1/23138463/how-the-world-became-rich-industrial-revolution-koyama-rubin">accelerated a great deal</a> with the onset of the Industrial Revolution.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="w0RoFQ">
That fits a superexponential story. And a superexponential story makes future increases in the rate of economic growth look very plausible. “Some people have the prior of This is crazy” when thinking about superexponential growth, Davidson told me in an interview. “And other people have the prior of This has happened throughout history.’”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Lm3II7">
Davidsons second argument relies on a <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/4733968_Population_Technology_and_Growth_From_Malthusian_Stagnation_to_the_Demographic_Transition_and_Beyond">popular</a> set of <a href="https://faculty.econ.ucdavis.edu/faculty/gclark/210a/readings/kremer1993.pdf">theories</a> within <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08898488809525278?journalCode=gmps20">economics</a> for why growth has accelerated over the very long run. The short answer these theories give is that population growth enabled economic growth to speed up.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="dp0Xmm">
“A long time ago, the world population was relatively small and the productivity of this population at producing ideas was extremely low,” Stanford economist Chad Jones explains in a <a href="https://web.stanford.edu/~chadj/bc400.pdf">2001 paper</a>. “Once an idea was discovered, however, consumption and fertility rose, producing a rise in population growth. More people were then available to find new ideas, and the next new idea was discovered more quickly.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="KluBSV">
Or, as Davidson summarizes: “more ideas → better farming techniques (or other innovations) → more food → more people → more ideas → …” That feedback loop leads not just to economic growth but to accelerating economic growth.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="AhuuOY">
This type of theory also explains why growth has slowed down in rich countries compared to where it was in the 19th century. In a process known as the “<a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/8/20/20802413/overpopulation-demographic-transition-population-explained">demographic transition</a>,” people in richer countries tend to choose, for a variety of reasons, to have fewer children. This breaks the feedback loop because more ideas leading to more food no longer necessarily leads to more people.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="7KnXXa">
But now, imagine that researchers are able to build two-legged <a href="https://www.vox.com/robots">robots</a>, with hands and arms and everything, capable of performing both any physical task a human can and anything on a computer a human can. Were talking full <em>Blade Runner</em> or <em>Battlestar Galactica</em> here (hopefully minus the rebellion).
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="uM2Hpw">
We would be able to build these robots in a much shorter time than the decades it takes to birth, raise, and educate a human worker, and at less expense. So wed achieve much faster population growth (or at least growth in the population of working robots) and bring back the feedback loop that caused economic growth to accelerate a few centuries ago. The fast-growing population of robots would be able to come up with, and implement, enough economically useful ideas to get the economy going faster and faster and faster.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="3fFO5A">
The third argument for transformative growth is based on the conventional model that economists use to study growth in the medium to long run. The classic way of looking at economic growth is sometimes called the Solow-Swan model, after <a href="http://piketty.pse.ens.fr/files/Solow1956.pdf">Robert Solow</a> and <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1475-4932.1956.tb00434.x">Trevor Swan</a>, who wrote separate papers developing it in 1956. (Solow <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/21/business/robert-solow-dead.html">died recently</a>, in December 2023.)
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="rtq6ay">
In this model, the size of the economy — the amount of goods and services being produced in a given year — depends on the amount of labor, the amount of capital, and a measure of productivity. Capital here specifically means tools and property that can be used to make stuff: machines in factories, ovens and dishwashers at restaurants, trademarks and patents that represent ideas you can use to make stuff.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="jDV0uq">
One of the most important aspects of this model is that there are diminishing returns to additional labor and additional capital. Thats because you need both to do anything useful. If you have a coffee shop with five baristas and no espresso machines, the first espresso machine is going to make them vastly more productive. But the 200th machine will do nothing because five baristas cant run 200 machines simultaneously. Similarly, if you have 200 machines and no baristas, the first barista you hire is going to be enormously valuable. The 1,000th will be useless.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="MdULmj">
Put human-level AI into this model and a bunch of things can happen that make superexponential growth look likely. AI could, for instance, make returns to capital constant, rather than diminishing. Thats because you can always invest in capital (namely, robots or other AI) instead of labor and get the same effect as if youd hired someone.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="exeYoo">
You can buy a robo-barista instead, and make all those espresso machines hum. That makes the labor component of growth literally irrelevant. Growth will explode. (Good.) But because demand for human labor will plunge to zero, most of humanity will be jobless and likely not share in that growth. (Bad.)
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="lysSRx">
Economists Philip Trammell and Anton Korinek have <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w31815">reviewed some 25 ways</a> of plugging AI into this standard model, as well as more recent “endogenous” models that treat technical change differently. Many of these approaches result in a prediction of superexponential growth. Advanced AI could automate research, fueling accelerating growth in productivity. It could increase the rate of return on investment in capital by making capital more useful (you have great robots now!), which spurs people to save more, which leads to more investment in capital, and so on. The exact mechanism varies based on the model and scenario, but its not hard to get the models to spit out a substantial acceleration in economic growth.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="3Sggi9">
The models, of course, are just models, and inserting AI puts them “out of sample”: Theyre designed for scenarios like the present, where human-level automation does not exist. But theyre also not just models: They express coherent stories and processes through which explosive growth could happen. Its not hard to see how <a href="https://www.vox.com/automation">automating</a> research, for instance, could lead to technology improving rapidly, with massive economic consequences.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="EBIvUy">
“There is no shortage of mechanisms through which advances in automation could have transformative growth consequences,” Trammell and Korinek conclude, “once we allow ourselves to look for them.”
</p>
<h3 id="P5RPiU">
The basic reason to doubt a growth explosion
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="7OElJ0">
If the above all feels very speculative and theoretical, thats fair. We have never had an AI-driven growth explosion before, and the effects of information technology on growth to date have been <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Productivity_paradox">famously meager</a>. In the US, the advent of personal computers coincided with a marked decline in productivity growth, not an increase. As <a href="https://www.standupeconomist.com/pdf/misc/solow-computer-productivity.pdf">Solow once put it</a>, “You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="qAHivP">
Beyond the surface-level sci-fi-ness of this narrative, though, economists and others have raised more specific doubts, many of which have less to do with what human-level AI would do than with whether we can achieve human-level AI any time soon.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="MMKw0p">
In the above section, I asked you to imagine a robot in the style of <em>Battlestar Galactica or Blade Runner</em>, capable of doing all labor, both physical and intellectual, that a human can do. But were obviously a long, long, long way away from the existence of anything like that. Robotics has <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/04/ai-robotics-research-engineering/673608/">tended to lag</a> behind software AI in recent years, and while some observers <a href="https://importai.substack.com/p/import-ai-364-robot-scaling-laws">foresee that changing</a>, its hardly guaranteed.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="RrgPxW">
So its important to consider the economic impact of AI that can do most but not all of what a human can do. There are good reasons to doubt explosive growth in these scenarios, in particular because the scenarios strongly resemble what has happened in the US and other rich economies in recent decades.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="EhAVI9">
One <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/~mwatson/papers/FHSW_20220120.pdf">recent paper</a> examined total factor productivity growth in the US between 1950 and 2018 and found that while it grew rapidly in some sectors (agriculture, durable goods manufacturing, wholesaling), it declined in others (construction, education and health care, finance/insurance).
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="OTQwoH">
This has decidedly not meant that the US economy has relied more and more on agriculture and manufacturing. In fact, employment in those sectors has <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=1ixZz">fallen considerably</a>, precisely because you can get more output per worker than in the past and so many fewer workers are needed to meet market demand. Automation has also led <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/03/02/389578089/your-grandparents-spent-more-of-their-money-on-food-than-you-do#:~:text=But%20our%20spending%20on%20food,to%209.6%20percent%20in%202007.">prices to fall</a> in <a href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/goods-deflation-is-back-it-could-speed-inflations-return-to-2-c782d434">those sectors</a>, and their share of overall economic output has fallen in turn.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="hcBo8Y">
By contrast, the share of jobs in those stagnant industries, the ones that arent getting more productive, has <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=1ixZZ">been increasing</a>. And because the less productive industries are becoming a bigger and bigger share of the economy, overall productivity growth has been dragged down.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="WMTO9r">
This is known as <a href="https://www.vox.com/new-money/2017/5/4/15547364/baumol-cost-disease-explained">Baumols cost disease</a>, after the late economist William Baumol, and its a dynamic that limits how much automation can supercharge growth. Even if you massively automate certain industries — and if youve been to a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9pxFgJwxFE">farm</a> or <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGzVOVVxTBw">car factory</a> recently, youll have noticed that these facilities rely heavily on very sophisticated planters, combines, and industrial robots to automate many tasks — the same process will lead those industries to become a less important part of the economy, and the industries where progress is harder will become more important.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="u2CHi1">
To apply this to the AI context, you can imagine AI leading to full or almost-full automation for a few tasks. Maybe it replaces front-end engineers for making websites and applications, or even software engineers en masse. Maybe it automates graphic design and 3D animation well enough that most businesses switch to using AI models rather than people. Maybe it replaces human journalists. (Id prefer not, but I have my worries.)
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="2AYSSV">
As long as there are other jobs (chefs, <a href="https://www.vox.com/child-care">child care</a> providers, construction workers) where AI isnt driving large increases in productivity — perhaps because we still cant manage to produce useful robots that can put that AI into the physical world — the result of this process will not be explosive growth. The result will be that employment and prices in automated sectors collapse, those sectors become less important as a share of the overall economy, and economic growth as a whole is still bottlenecked by sectors where productivity growth is hard to achieve.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="8VQ49q">
Jones, the Northwestern economist who has modeled how AI <a href="https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w23928/w23928.pdf">affects growth trajectories</a>, anticipates that these kinds of bottlenecks will prevent explosive growth due to AI, at least in the near term. Think about how much technical progress has happened in computing over the past 70 years or so. “<a href="https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/c6KFvQcZggQKZzxr9/trends-in-gpu-price-performance">Moores law</a> is almost absurd,” he noted in an interview. “Its 10^17 more flops [a measure of computing performance]<strong> </strong>per dollar than 70 years ago. Thats incredible.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="kHkw2D">
But our ability to manipulate atoms hasnt matched our ability to manipulate software bits, which is why, since the advent of the integrated circuit in 1958, economic growth in the US and other rich countries has not been explosive. There are other industries where productivity is not exploding, and those are holding us back.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="mu5hDn">
“If you took a picture of a restaurant now and 1950, its effectively the same,” Jones says as an example. “They take your order, someones going to take an order to the kitchen, someones going to cook it using capital equipment and labor.” It might be a little cheaper now; the ovens and dishwashers are a little more efficient. But its not what weve seen with computers, and thats meant overall growth has been modest.

<h3 id="yGQFxF">
Whos right?
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="4IPN2P">
Believers in a growth explosion argue that modeling AI like this undersells its potential. Past technological advances, ones that have brought us steady but not accelerating growth over the past century or so, “took the form of technologies that automate small segments of production, offering modest benefits while requiring numerous expensive synchronized changes across the economy to be implemented,” economist and growth explosion theorist Tamay Besiroglu noted in a <a href="https://asteriskmag.com/issues/03/the-great-inflection-a-debate-about-ai-and-explosive-growth">recent debate on the topic</a>. “In contrast, if AI is capable of everything a human can do, we could potentially automate large numbers of tasks in one go, with fewer costly updates to existing processes.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="kPOoAj">
Notice here that Besiroglu is assuming an AI capable of everything a human can do. This isnt strictly necessary for the growth explosion story. “It simplifies the argument to talk about full automation, but I think we could get explosive growth without literally full automation,” Davidson says. We dont necessarily need to automate things like caregiving or teaching or surgery: “If you can fully automate R&amp;D and capital investment, that gets the feedback loop going that gets growth going very fast.“
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="FQsYti">
Fully automating research and development (R&amp;D), of course, is no small thing either — and part of why this scenario sees fast growth is the R&amp;D sectors are working hard to get around bottlenecks created by sectors that arent automated.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="lQNCMJ">
The more I dug into this debate, the more this seemed to be the crux of the disagreement. Believers in a growth explosion seem quite confident that it is possible, in a matter of decades, to develop AI and robots capable of doing any economically useful task a human can do, or any task important for the production of new ideas that drive productivity and economic growth.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="rX7Ma2">
Skeptics just dont buy this. “This tech is amazing, its moving fast, its important,” David Autor, a professor of economics at MIT who has <a href="https://economics.mit.edu/sites/default/files/publications/AI%20and%20Jobs%20-%20Evidence%20from%20Online%20Vacancies.pdf">studied the effects of AI on jobs</a>, told me. “But I dont think it converges toward the end of labor.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="jGRzPB">
AI, as impressive as it is, is simply not on track to substitute for all labor, in this view. “AI does not reason,” Autor continues — which would, for instance, make it impossible to automate R&amp;D. “It does not think analytically, it does not understand object constancy. I dont think that problem solves itself.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="qjz0yd">
In some ways, this makes the question of whether AI will drive explosive growth a bit more tractable because there doesnt seem to be as much disagreement among economists and other analysts about what human-level AI will do if we get it. The actual state of the technology seems like the biggest source of uncertainty, rather than the effects of its most extreme form. Human-level AI does seem very likely to drive explosive economic growth — by totally substituting for labor, by automating the discovery of ideas, or both.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="sIDFHI">
If you think human-level AI is inevitable, this is both exciting and terrifying. Many of these explosive growth models project that demand for human labor will fall to zero. Thats a scenario of massive unemployment and grotesque inequality between the minority of people who own capital and profit from the growth explosion and the majority who lack capital and languish. Taxes and <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23810027/openai-artificial-intelligence-google-deepmind-anthropic-ai-universal-basic-income-meta">other mechanisms</a> could seize some of the gains and redistribute them to the newly unemployed majority, but a scenario with unemployment levels far above those of the Great Depression would be rather ugly, alms or not.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="c75gat">
Even if you dont think human-level AI is possible or likely in the near term, the picture could still be interesting. There are many scenarios in which AI does not lead to an “explosion” in growth, or to superexponential growth, but does lead to growth being persistently higher for some time — and more widely spread. For instance, Autor is highly optimistic about the potential for AI to <a href="https://www.noemamag.com/how-ai-could-help-rebuild-the-middle-class/">improve productivity</a> in precisely those sectors (like health care and education) where its been stubbornly low, unclogging the <a href="https://economics.mit.edu/sites/default/files/2023-06/Bottlenecks%20-%20Sectoral%20Imbalances%20and%20the%20US%20Productivity%20Slowdown_0.pdf">bottlenecks</a> that have been holding back the overall economy.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="oh1Sl4">
And because the unmet need in these areas is so high, he thinks this productivity could coexist with high levels of employment, unlike the situation in agriculture and manufacturing where high productivity has gone along with declines in employment. Health care is “not going to be like agriculture, where we have so much that it doesnt employ anyone,” he says. “I dont see it getting less labor intensive, but much more efficient.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="oIwC7n">
Explosive growth is a pretty high bar, even if its theorists make a compelling case that its at least possible. But even a smaller boost could wind up changing all our lives.
