<li><strong>Integrating T-cell receptor and transcriptome for large-scale single-cell immune profiling analysis</strong> -
<div>
Recent advancements in single-cell immune profiling that enable the measurement of the transcriptome and T-cell receptor (TCR) sequences simultaneously have emerged as a promising approach to study immune responses at cellular resolution. Yet, combining these different types of information from multiple datasets into a joint representation is complicated by the unique characteristics of each modality and the technical effects between datasets. Here, we present mvTCR, a multimodal generative model to learn a unified representation across modalities and datasets for joint analysis of single-cell immune profiling data. We show that mvTCR allows the construction of large-scale and multimodal T-cell atlases by distilling modality-specific properties into a shared view, enabling unique and improved data analysis. Specifically, we demonstrated mvTCRs potential by revealing and separating SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cell clusters from bystanders that would have been missed in individual unimodal data analysis. Finally, mvTCR can enable automated analysis of new datasets when combined with transfer-learning approaches. Overall, mvTCR provides a principled solution for standard analysis tasks such as multimodal integration, clustering, specificity analysis, and batch correction for single-cell immune profiling data.

<li><strong>Erroneous Consonance. How Inaccurate Beliefs about Physician Opinion Influence COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy</strong> -
<div>
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers have studied how Americans attitudes toward health experts influence their health behaviors and policy opinions. Fewer, however, consider the potential gap between individual and expert opinion about COVID-19, and how that might shape health attitudes and behavior. This omission is notable, as discrepancies between individual and expert opinion could help explain why some Americans fail to take action to protect themselves and others from the virus. In novel demographically representative surveys of the US adult population (N = 5,482) and primary care physician subpopulations (PCPs; N = 625), we contrast the relationship between: (1) Americans and (2) PCPs preferences regarding who ought to be responsible for taking action to combat the spread of COVID-19, as well as (3) Americans perceptions of PCP preferences (“PCP meta-opinion”). In the aggregate, we find that Americans are far less likely than PCPs to see a role for both private and state actors in taking action to combat COVID-19. Interestingly, though, this disjuncture is not reflected in individual-level PCP meta-opinion; as most Americans think that PCPs share their views on state and private intervention (𝛕b = 0.44 - 0.49). However, this consonance is often erroneous, which we show can have problematic health consequences. Multivariate models suggest that Americans who both see little place for individual responsibility in taking action to stop viral spread and who think that PCPs share those views are significantly less likely to vaccinate against COVID-19. We conclude by discussing the public health benefits of efforts to bring public opinion in line with expert opinion.

<div>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
Background Dexamethasone, a widely available glucocorticoid, was approved for use in hospitalized COVID-19 patients early in the pandemic based on the RECOVERY trial; however, evidence is still needed to support its real-world effectiveness in patients with a wide range of comorbidities and in diverse care settings. Objectives To conduct a comparative effectiveness analysis of dexamethasone use with and without remdesivir in hospitalized COVID-19 patients using electronic health record data. Methods We conducted a retrospective real-world effectiveness analysis using the harmonized, highly granular electronic health record data of the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) Data Enclave. Analysis was restricted to COVID-19 patients in an inpatient setting, prior to vaccine availability. Primary outcome was in-hospital death; secondary outcome was combined in-hospital death and severe outcome as defined by use of ECMO or mechanical ventilation during stay. Missing data were imputed with single imputation. Matching of dexamethasone-treated patients to non-dexamethasone-treated controls was accomplished using propensity score (PS) matching, stratified by remdesivir treatment and based on demographics, baseline laboratory values, and comorbidities. Treatment benefit was quantified using logistic regression. Further sensitivity analyses were performed using clinical adjusters in matched groups and in strata defined by quartiles of PS. Results Regression analysis revealed a statistically significant association between dexamethasone use and reduced risk of in-hospital mortality for those not receiving remdesivir (OR=0.77, 95% CI: 0.62 to 0.95, p=0.017), and a borderline statistically significant risk for those receiving remdesivir (OR=0.74, 95% CI: 0.53 to 1.02, p=0.054). Treatment also showed secondary outcome benefit. In sensitivity analyses, treatment effect size generally remained similar with some heterogeneity of benefit across strata of PS. Conclusions We add evidence that dexamethasone provides benefit with respect to mortality and severe outcomes in a diverse, national hospitalized sample, prior to vaccine availability.

<li><strong>ViReaDB: A user-friendly database for compactly storing viral sequence data and rapidly computing consensus genome sequences</strong> -
<div>
Motivation: In viral molecular epidemiology, reconstruction of consensus genomes from sequence data is critical for tracking mutations and variants of concern. However, storage of the raw sequence data can become prohibitively large, and computing consensus genome from sequence data can be slow and requires bioinformatics expertise. Results: ViReaDB is a user-friendly database system for compactly storing viral sequence data and rapidly computing consensus genome sequences. From a dataset of 1 million trimmed mapped SARS-CoV-2 reads, it is able to compute the base counts and the consensus genome in 16 minutes, store the reads alongside the base counts and consensus in 50 MB, and optionally store just the base counts and consensus (without the reads) in 300 KB. Availability: ViReaDB is freely available on PyPI (https://pypi.org/project/vireadb) and on GitHub (https://github.com/niemasd/ViReaDB) as an open-source Python software project.

<li><strong>Sensitivity of endemic behaviour of Covid-19 under a multi-dose vaccination regime, to various biological parameters and control variables</strong> -
<div>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
For an infectious disease such as Covid-19, we present a new four-stage vaccination model (un-vaccinated, dose 1+2, booster, repeated boosters), which examines the impact of vaccination coverage, vaccination rate, generation interval, control reproduction number, vaccine efficacies, and rates of waning immunity, upon the dynamics of infection. We derive a single equation that allows computation of equilibrium prevalence and incidence of infection, given knowledge about these parameter and variable values. Based upon a 20 compartment model, we develop a numerical simulation of the associated differential equations. The model is not a forecasting or even predictive one, given the uncertainty about several biological parameter values. Rather, it is intended to aid qualitative understanding of how equilibrium levels of infection may be impacted upon, by the parameters of the system. We examine one at a time sensitivity analysis around a base case scenario. The key finding which should be of interest to policy makers, is that while factors such as improved vaccine efficacy, increased vaccination rates, lower waning rates, and more stringent non- pharmaceutical interventions might be thought to improve equilibrium levels of infection, this might only be done to good effect, if vaccination coverage on a recurrent basis, is sufficiently high.

<div>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
Background: The COVID19 pandemic has negatively impacted the social fabric of people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). Objective: To evaluate the associations between personal social network environment and neurological function in pwMS and controls during the COVID19 pandemic and compare with the prepandemic baseline. Methods: We first analyzed data collected from 8 cohorts of pwMS and control participants during the COVID19 pandemic (MarchDecember 2020). We then leveraged data collected between 20172019 in 3 of the 8 cohorts for longitudinal comparison. Participants completed a questionnaire that quantified the structure and composition of their personal social network, including the health behaviors of network members. We assessed neurological disability using three interrelated patientreported outcomes: Patient Determined Disease Steps (PDDS), Multiple Sclerosis Rating ScaleRevised (MSRSR), and Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS)Physical Function. We identified the network features associated with neurologic disability using paired ttests and covariateadjusted regressions. Results: In the cross-sectional analysis of the pandemic data from 1130 pwMS and 1250 control participants, higher percent of network members with a perceived negative health influence was associated with greater neurological symptom burden in pwMS (MSRS-R: Beta[95% CI]=2.181[1.082, 3.279], p&lt;.001) and worse physical function in controls (PROMIS-Physical Function: Beta[95% CI]=-5.707[-7.405, -4.010], p&lt;.001). In the longitudinal analysis of 230 pwMS and 136 control participants, the percent of people contacted “weekly or less” (p&lt;.001) decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic for both pwMS (30.34% to 18.78%) and controls (23.48% to 14.89%) when compared to the pre-pandemic period. PwMS further experienced a greater reduction in network size (p&lt;.001), increase in constraint (a measure of close ties of the network, p&lt;.001) and decrease in maximum degree (highest number of ties of a network member, p&lt;.001) than controls during the COVID19 pandemic. These changes in network features were not associated with worsening neurological disability during the pandemic. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that negative health influences in personal social networks are associated with worse disability in all participants, and the COVID19 pandemic led to contraction of personal social networks to a greater extent for pwMS than controls.

<li><strong>Inequalities in childrens mental health care: analysis of routinely collected data on prescribing and referrals to secondary care</strong> -
<div>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
Background One in eight children in the United Kingdom are estimated to have a mental health condition, and many do not receive support or treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted mental health and disrupted the delivery of care. Prevalence of poor mental health is not evenly distributed across age groups, by sex or socioeconomic groups. Equity in access to mental health care is a policy priority but detailed socio-deomgraphic trends are relatively under-researched. Methods We analysed records for all mental health prescriptions and referrals to specialist mental health outpatient care between the years of 2015 and 2021 for children aged 2 to 17 years in a single NHS Scotland health board region. We analysed trends in prescribing, referrals, and acceptance to out-patient treatment over time, and measured differences in treatment and service use rates by age, sex, and area deprivation. Results We identified 18,732 children with 178,657 mental health prescriptions and 21,874 referrals to specialist outpatient care. Prescriptions increased by 59% over the study period. Boys received double the prescriptions of girls and the rate of prescribing in the most deprived areas was double that in the least deprived. Mean age at first mental health prescription was almost 1 year younger in the most deprived areas than in the least. Referrals increased 9% overall. Initially, boys and girls both had an annual referral rate of 2.7 per 1,000, but this fell 6% for boys and rose 25% for girls. Referral rate for the youngest decreased 67% but increased 21% for the oldest. The proportion of rejected referrals increased steeply since 2020 from 17% to 30%. The proportion of referrals accepted for girls rose to 62% and the mean age increased 1.5 years. Conclusions The large increase in mental health prescribing and changes in referrals to specialist outpatient care aligns with emerging evidence of increasing poor mental health, particularly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The static size of the population accepted for specialist treatment amid greater demand, and the changing demographics of those accepted, indicate clinical prioritisation and unmet need. Persistent inequities in mental health prescribing and referrals require urgent action.

<li><strong>Computationally restoring the potency of a clinical antibody against SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariants</strong> -
<div>
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how viral variants that escape monoclonal antibodies can limit options to control an outbreak. With the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, many clinically used antibody drug products lost in vitro and in vivo potency, including AZD7442 and its constituent, AZD1061. Rapidly modifying such antibodies to restore efficacy to emerging variants is a compelling mitigation strategy. We therefore sought to computationally design an antibody that restores neutralization of BA.1 and BA.1.1 while simultaneously maintaining efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617.2 (Delta), beginning from COV2-2130, the progenitor of AZD1061. Here we describe COV2-2130 derivatives that achieve this goal and provide a proof-of-concept for rapid antibody adaptation addressing escape variants. Our best antibody achieves potent and broad neutralization of BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2, BA.2.12.1, BA.4, BA.5, and BA.5.5 Omicron subvariants, where the parental COV2-2130 suffers significant potency losses. This antibody also maintains potency against Delta and WA1/2020 strains and provides protection in vivo against the strains we tested, WA1/2020, BA.1.1, and BA.5. Because our design approach is computational - driven by high-performance computing-enabled simulation, machine learning, structural bioinformatics and multi-objective optimization algorithms - it can rapidly propose redesigned antibody candidates aiming to broadly target multiple escape variants and virus mutations known or predicted to enable escape.

<li><strong>Safeguarding People against Social Media Frauds during the COVID-19 Oxygen Supply Crisis in India</strong> -
<div>
During the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India, the drastic increase in the number of COVID cases led to a positive demand shock for medical grade oxygen. However, an inadequate supply of oxygen created a huge supply-demand gap, making people resort to social media platforms in search of oxygen cylinders for their next of kin. While it alleviated problems for the masses, these desperate posts for oxygen attracted fraudsters, resulting in numerous people not getting oxygen on time. In this paper, we present research problems that arise from this crisis and argue that deep learning can be instrumental towards their solutions. Also, we propose a graph deep learning?based framework to elucidate a possible solution and incite further research in the domain.

<li><strong>The ACE-2 receptor accelerates but is not biochemically required for SARS-CoV-2 membrane fusion.</strong> -
<div>
The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infects human cells via the ACE-2 receptor. Circumstantial evidence suggests that ACE-2 may not just serve as an attachment factor but also help activate the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein for membrane fusion. Here, we test that hypothesis directly, using DNA-lipid tethering as a synthetic attachment factor in the place of ACE-2. We find that SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus and virus-like particles are both capable of membrane fusion if attached in the absence of ACE-2 and activated with an appropriate protease. However, addition of soluble ACE-2 speeds the fusion reaction. This is observed for both the Wuhan strain and the B.1.1.529 Omicron variant. Kinetic analysis suggests that there are at least two rate-limiting steps for SARS-CoV-2 membrane fusion, one of which is ACE-2 dependent and one of which is not. These data establish that, in the presence of an alternative attachment factor, ACE-2 is not biochemically required for SARS-CoV-2 membrane fusion. Since ACE-2 serves as the high-affinity attachment factor on human cells, the possibility to replace it with other factors has implications for the evolvability of SARS-CoV-2 and the fitness landscape for future related coronaviruses.

<li><strong>Phenotypic alteration of low-density granulocytes in people with pulmonary post-acute sequalae of SARS-CoV-2 infection</strong> -
<div>
Low-density granulocytes (LDGs) are a distinct subset of neutrophils whose increased abundance is associated with the severity of COVID-19. However, the long-term effects of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on LDG levels and phenotypic alteration remain unexplored. Using participants na&amp;iumlve to SARS-CoV-2 (NP), infected with SARS-CoV-2 with no residual symptoms (NRS), and infected with SARS-CoV-2 with chronic pulmonary symptoms (PPASC), we compared LDG levels and their phenotype by measuring the expression of markers for activation, maturation, and neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation using flow cytometry. The number of LDGs was significantly elevated in PPASC compared to NP. Individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 (NRS and PPASC) demonstrated increased CD10+ and CD16HI subset counts of LDGs compared to NP group. Further characterization of LDGs demonstrated that LDGs from PPASC displayed higher NET forming ability and aggregation with platelets compared to LDGs from NP and NRS. Our data demonstrates that mature neutrophils with a heightened activation phenotype remain in circulation long after initial SARS-CoV-2 infection. Persistent elevation of markers for neutrophil activation and NET formation on LDGs, as well as an enhanced proclivity for platelet-neutrophil aggregation (PNA) formation in individuals with PPASC may be associated with the development of long-term pulmonary sequelae.

<li><strong>Antibody avidity and multi-specificity combined to confer protection against SARS-CoV-2 and resilience against viral escape</strong> -
<div>
SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, has been responsible for a global pandemic. Monoclonal antibodies have been used as antiviral therapeutics, but have been limited in efficacy by viral sequence variability in emerging variants of concern (VOCs), and in deployment by the need for high doses. In this study, we leverage the MULTI-specific, multi-Affinity antiBODY (Multabody, MB) platform, derived from the human apoferritin protomer, to drive the multimerization of antibody fragments and generate exceptionally potent and broad SARS-CoV-2 neutralizers. CryoEM revealed a high degree of homogeneity for the core of these engineered antibody-like molecules at 2.1 [A] resolution. We demonstrate that neutralization potency improvements of the MB over corresponding IgGs translates into superior in vivo protection: in the SARS-CoV-2 mouse challenge model, comparable in vivo protection was achieved for the MB delivered at 30x lower dose compared to the corresponding IgGs. Furthermore, we show how MBs potently neutralize SARS-CoV-2 VOCs by leveraging augmented avidity, even when corresponding IgGs lose their ability to neutralize potently. Multiple mAb specificities could also be combined into a single MB molecule to expand the neutralization breadth beyond SARS-CoV-2 to other sarbecoviruses. Our work demonstrates how avidity and multi-specificity combined can be leveraged to confer protection and resilience against viral diversity that exceeds that of traditional monoclonal antibody therapies.

<li><strong>Molecular basis of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant evasion from shared neutralizing antibody response</strong> -
<div>
A detailed understanding of the molecular features of the neutralizing epitopes developed by viral escape mutants is important for predicting and developing vaccines or therapeutic antibodies against continuously emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. Here, we report three human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) generated from COVID-19 recovered individuals during first wave of pandemic in India. These mAbs had publicly shared near germline gene usage and potently neutralized Alpha and Delta, but poorly neutralized Beta and completely failed to neutralize Omicron BA.1 SARS-CoV-2 variants. Structural analysis of these three mAbs in complex with trimeric spike protein showed that all three mAbs are involved in bivalent spike binding with two mAbs targeting class-1 and one targeting class-4 Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) epitope. Comparison of immunogenetic makeup, structure, and function of these three mAbs with our recently reported class-3 RBD binding mAb that potently neutralized all SARS-CoV-2 variants revealed precise antibody footprint, specific molecular interactions associated with the most potent multi-variant binding / neutralization efficacy. This knowledge has timely significance for understanding how a combination of certain mutations affect the binding or neutralization of an antibody and thus have implications for predicting structural features of emerging SARS-CoV-2 escape variants and to develop vaccines or therapeutic antibodies against these.

<li><strong>Subtle cognitive impairments in memory, attention, and executive functioning in patients with post-COVID syndrome and their relationships with clinical variables and subjective complaints</strong> -
<div>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
Background and objectives. Cognitive symptoms persisting beyond three months following COVID-19 present a considerable disease burden. We aimed to establish a domain-specific cognitive profile of post-COVID syndrome (PCS) and relationships with subjective cognitive complaints and clinical variables to provide relevant information for the understanding of cognitive dysfunction and its predictors in a clinical cohort with PCS. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, we compared cognitive performance on the clinically viable Oxford Cognitive Screen-Plus between a large post-COVID cohort (n = 282) and a socio-demographically matched healthy control group (n = 52). We assessed group differences in terms of fatigue and depression as well as relationships between cognitive dysfunction and clinical and patient-reported outcomes. Results. On a group-level, patients scored significantly lower on delayed verbal memory (non-parametric effect size r = .13), attention (r = .1), and executive functioning (r=.1) than healthy controls. In each of these domains, 10-20% of patients performed more than 1.5 SD below the healthy control mean. Delayed Memory was particularly affected and a small proportion of its variance was explained by hospitalisation (beta = -.72, p &lt; .01) and age (beta = -.03, p &lt; .05; R2adj. = .08). Attention scores were significantly predicted by hospitalisation (beta = -.78, p &lt; .01) and fatigue (beta = -.04, p &lt; .05; R2adj. = .06). Discussion. PCS is associated with long-term cognitive dysfunction, particularly in delayed verbal memory, attention, and executive functioning. Deficits in delayed memory performance seem to be of particular relevance to patients9 subjective experience of impairment. Initial disease severity, current level of fatigue, and age seem to predict cognitive performance, while time since infection, depression, and pre-existing conditions do not. Longitudinal data are needed to map long-term course of cognitive dysfunction in PCS.

Gen Z is channeling climate anxiety and anger into music.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="wEAZK7">
All summer, 24-year-old Augusta Senenssie had Billie Eilishs song “Overheated” stuck in her head.<strong> </strong>In June 2022, Eilish hosted a series of <a href="https://www.imoverheated.com/">climate talks</a> in London by the same name, alongside her UK tour dates. In July and August, the UK faced a <a href="https://www.vox.com/23268566/europe-heat-wave-uk-france-canicule-spain-wildfire-record-temperature-climate">series</a> <a href="https://www.vox.com/2022/7/20/23270092/europe-uk-heat-wave-roads-trains-climate-change">of</a> <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2022/8/21/23315264/droughts-extreme-heat-climate-crisis">heat waves</a>, breaking records for the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the country. Senenssie walked around her sweltering London neighborhood with searing music in her ears. Another of her favorites, “Fire on the Mountain” by Asa, portends doom with lyrics like “One day, the river will overflow / And therell be nowhere for us to go /And we will run, run / Wishing we had put out the fire, oh.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="O9o8wV">
As a youth council member of the climate action organization Earth Uprising, Senenssie is closer to the levers of climate power than most of her peers. Her activism has brought her to United Nations conferences on climate change and youth. But that doesnt necessarily make her more optimistic. “You have people say loads of congratulatory things, and have you go and speak at all of these important summits, but your work has no binding impact on whats being decided at the high levels that affects everyone,” she said.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="eSSX9X">
Senenssie is not alone in her anger. That doomer tone youre sensing in the internet ether — where young people are <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BxtR97JH5f8/?hl=en">posting</a> <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CgKf-BIPote/">memes</a> about <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CQd3e1xBS2l/">this was not only the hottest summer of our lives</a> but also the coldest summer of the rest of our lives — follows a shift in Gen Zs perception of a climate-changed future. This sentiment slips into the memes they make, the way they relate to their peers and families, and even the music they listen to. TikToks <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/music/Orange-6997415267898771458">set to Pinegroves “Orange,”</a> a song about <a href="https://www.vox.com/21427857/california-wildfire-2020-oregon-washington-air-quality-smoke-orange-red-sky-health">Californias devastating 2020 wildfire summer,</a> show young fans crying on camera above comments like “doomed species in its death throes” and “Im giving up.” Like listening to devastating breakup songs after youve been dumped, young people are bingeing music about the end of the world to wallow in their climate despair.

The first Gen Zers came of age alongside the 2018 <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) special report</a> that detailed the disastrous impacts of a projected 1.5°C global temperature rise. That summer was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/07/climate/ipcc-climate-report-2040.html">filled with</a> <a href="https://gizmodo.com/the-future-is-calling-and-it-says-act-now-or-were-all-1840369289">headlines</a> about humanity having only <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/10/8/17948832/climate-change-global-warming-un-ipcc-report">12 years left</a> before certain catastrophe, and Gen Z became convinced that their futures were over before they even started.

“This generation feels like theyre facing an unprecedented threat … like, were not gonna get through this. This is forever,” said environmental studies professor Sarah Jaquette Ray. In her book <em>A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety,</em> Ray describes asking her class to visualize a positive future where climate change had been successfully mitigated. She found that these students were unable to envision a future of any kind — their anxiety cut off their ability to see themselves living into adulthood.

A 2021 <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(21)00278-3/fulltext#seccestitle130">survey in <em>The Lancet</em></a> showed that 56 percent of people ages 16 to 25 believe “humanity is doomed,” and 75 percent describe the future as “frightening,” highlighting a generational divide in outlook on climate change. Senenssie describes a “patriarchal arrogance” that she encounters as being the fuel to her climate grief. She feels like adults whose daily lives arent yet affected by climate change are quick to minimize her fears.

Older generations tend to compare climate change to other threats like economic recessions and wars, Ray confirms. “Theres that kind of battle over whose existential threats were worse.” Older generations who have overcome their own challenges believe Gen Zs anxieties will be healed with time. But seeing no evidence that an end to climate change is in sight, young people feel dismissed, and seek validation for their fears elsewhere.

Tamara Lindeman, 37, of the folk band the Weather Station, describes her lyrics as an attempt to process her own emotions around climate change. “Theres this term soft denial. You know, but you act like you dont know. I was in that place for a few years, just avoiding the topic in my mind, avoiding the topic in the news, and then it just hit me all over again,” Lindeman said. She went on to write lyrics like “Im pretty tired of this bait-and-switch / I dont wanna have to smile when I open my gift, and theres nothing inside it,” which speak to Gen Zs frustration with older generations who minimize their concerns about the future.

“With other things that you might be afraid of, you might be able to do research and you might be able to lessen your fear.” she said. “With climate, when you do research it, it expands [your fear]. I think whats important about this issue is fear and grief is an appropriate and accurate response.” Her music reflects that climate anxiety isnt an emotion to solve or get over. Like her fans, Lindeman experiences it thrumming in the background of her everyday life.

But apocalypse music isnt some cesspool of anguish from which listeners can never escape. Once fans find validation for their feelings, they look around and find a bunch of other people feeling the same way. “I have this huge community of people that like the same music as me. We can all relate to the lyrics, be sad and angsty and all that stuff. Weird as it sounds, it feels kind of comforting,” says Herzog. Think about the role that music fandom plays in identity formation and community-building in adolescence — the people who listen to your favorite band are the only ones who really get you. Then imagine that, unlike your parents or classmates, the person next to you at the concert takes your deepest fears seriously.

“Say somebody was experiencing anxiety, got involved in the community, found their people, and then got involved in some climate actions,” said Ray. “It wasnt the actions that they did that alleviated the anxiety. … The antidote to our feelings is the same antidote to the climate crisis, which is community.” The oft-memed idea that <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2021/7/19/22535050/gen-z-relationship-fast-fashion">individual actions dont matter</a> in the face of corporate inaction can leave young people feeling powerless, no matter how many car rides or fast-fashion hauls they forgo. But building the kinds of relationships theyll need for <a href="https://www.vox.com/even-better/23196757/summer-disaster-weather-preparation-community-hurricane-wildfire-drought-heatwave-flood">climate resiliency</a> seems much more within reach.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="VcwvjF">
Once young people have an outlet for their grief, it can start to transform. Bartees Strange funneled his own anxiety into his work at a climate advocacy nonprofit for more than five years. Then, disillusioned and burned out, the 33-year-old songwriter quit his job in 2020 to release his debut album <em>Live Forever</em>. He described his frustration with white colleagues for whom climate change was their first personal experience of injustice. “My life has always been impacted by a third party since forever, so Im watching people in the climate movement go through emotions that I went through as an 8-year-old,” he said. “But when you live through it and youre able to celebrate, and you process it in a way where you can uplift other people, then grief can become fuel for beautiful things.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Si5pur">
Stranges music, like Lindemans, starts with grief, but songs like “Mulholland Drive” take listeners on a cycle of death and rebirth with lyrics like “I dont believe in the bullshit of wondering when we die / Ive seen the ending, its all in your face and your eyes / Ive seen how we die, I know how to lose.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="cok82g">
For young fans feeling like theyre watching the end of the world, Strange offers up the possibility that letting go of one idea of the future makes room for a new one to begin. He hints at what Ray calls the “radical imagination” needed to see a future that lies just beyond certain doom. That imagination is crucial for finding climate solutions, but the trick is that it cant be accessed by trying to bypass climate emotions with dismissal or detachment.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="OskoOM">
For Senenssie, that future looks like resisting the pull to pessimism that only wealthy countries can afford. While those <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/03/young-people-climate-justice-cop27-un-talks-egypt">least responsible </a>for the climate crisis are already feeling its worst effects, she reminds me, young people in the Global South do not have the luxury of giving in. And listening to music from artists around the world is one way of maintaining her connection to the global climate movement. “The emotions can be sort of overwhelming,” says Senenssie. “But I think of the beauty of the fact that in this movement and in this space together, we feel so deeply, and were so interconnected.”

Networking gets a bad rap, but it doesnt have to be overly scary, shallow, or corporate.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="YoupyT">
At the end of my sophomore year of college, I found myself at a career crossroads. The pandemic hit a few months earlier and like most students across the country, I was kicked off campus and sent back home. As I spent the remainder of the school year sitting idly in my childhood bedroom, I had no choice but to wrestle with the ever-looming question: What do I really want to do with my life?
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="BPxy37">
Media and culture had always been passions of mine, but I never saw them as viable paths to pursue. But the dreariness of the pandemic shook me, and I decided to pivot from business to journalism with no portfolio, no connections, and no experience during what seemed like the most inopportune time to make a career switch. The only resource I had at my disposal was the internet — and turns out I didnt need much more. Over the next few weeks, I scoured the depths of Twitter — reading profiles of journalists my age and seasoned writers with dream gigs. I figured the best way to learn more about the industry was to actually talk to people who were in it. I cold Twitter-DMd anyone I thought was remotely interesting and asked to hop on the phone with them. To my surprise not one person refused — and through these conversations I learned about programs to apply to, editors to pitch to, and other writers I should try to talk to.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="UBP8w3">
At the time, I didnt consider what I was doing to be “networking.” I always associated the term with putting on a fake persona, connecting with professionals on LinkedIn, or talking to recruiters at companies I applied to work at. In fact, thats one of the biggest misconceptions about networking — and is what turns so many people away from one of the most crucial skills to building a successful career. According to HubSpot, <a href="https://www.apollotechnical.com/networking-statistics/">85 percent</a> of jobs are filled through networking. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/12/27/how-to-get-a-job-often-comes-down-to-one-elite-personal-asset.html#:~:text=Opinion%20%2D%20CNBC%20Work-,How%20to%20get%20a%20job%20often%20comes%20down%20to%20one,still%20don't%20realize%20it&amp;text=Research%20shows%20that%2070%25%20of,through%20personal%20and%20professional%20connections.">Seventy percent</a> of jobs are never even published publicly, meaning that so many opportunities arise simply from talking to people — whether its a formal coffee chat or over Twitter DM. Its a daunting reality, particularly for those who dont come from privileged backgrounds or arent born with connections that can help them out. Luckily, there are plenty of tactics and tools anyone can use to strengthen or build new relationships — especially in the digital age.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="VPancl">
Want to learn how to network but dont know where to start? Heres a simple guide that shows you the term isnt as cringey or scary as its all made out to be. Its actually quite intuitive, and like most things, becomes easier the more you do it. So give it a shot, because talking to the right person could go a long way.

Network with friends first
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="1bPX3D">
Theres no easier place to start networking than with people you already know. You might be thinking, “I already know what everyone in my circle does. How can they help me?” As much as we like to think otherwise, the world doesnt revolve around us. People, even those closest to us, arent constantly thinking about us and our needs. They cant read our minds either.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="scdMKi">
A close mentor, professor, or even friend could know that youre vaguely interested in something but have no idea that youre actively looking for a job or to learn more if you dont tell them. All along, they could have had the resources to help you or introduce you to someone who might know more than them. I would talk to someone about journalism and they would say, “Do you know so-and-so? They do something similar, and Im sure would love to talk to you about it!” It never hurts to ask for an introduction, or you can reach out to them directly.
</p>
<h3 id="dH6naV">
Re-activate loose connections (email is your friend)

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="MWTmEU">
Almost 50 years ago, Dr. Mark Granovetter, a sociologist at Stanford University, published an influential paper titled “The Strength of Weak Ties.” In it, Granovetter showed that those we consider to be part of our outer circle of acquaintances (“weak ties”) are more likely to be sources of new information and ideas than those in our inner circles (“strong ties”).
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="RgYUdF">
In his research, Granovetter surveyed 282 Boston-based workers and found that 84% got their jobs through weak-tie relationships. The argument is simple: Those in your inner circles usually have the same information and overlapping networks that you do. It is more likely that an acquaintance will have a different perspective and can act as a bridge to other networks you cannot see.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="IE1Vbg">
“Novelty means getting outside of your own little social bubble, or, as we have learned to say, echo chamber, and talking to people you dont know that well who are doing things you never imagined,” Granovetter told me in an email. “If you only know people you work with every day, you wont be learning anything new about how to do things.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="7PTJSD">
Reaching out to that friend-of-a-friend who works in a field youre interested in could open you up to even more circles. You dont need to have a specific reason for reconnecting other than being interested in the other person and what they do. People are usually always open to talking about themselves, particularly when its with someone who is trying to learn from them. An email could be as simple as:
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="dnerId">

However, access to social capital is not available to everyone in the same way. “Research, (and not just my research) is consistent with the finding that social capital tends to be more limited for African Americans and other minority groups than their white counterparts,” Danielle Taana Smith, a professor of African American Studies at Syracuse University and Director of the Renée Crown University Honors Program, says. “I would encourage individuals in minority groups to seek out people who can be allies, to seek out mentors, and to form close relationships with them.” Professional organizations, and peer mentoring programs that exist at universities and corporations, are a good place to start, Smith says.

Google and social media are also your friends
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ZGDHdv">
With the ability to find and reach people with a quick Google search, networking has never been easier — and has become even more accessible since the pandemic put constraints on in-person events.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="CbXJ5h">
Social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook can be used for much more than just sharing experiences with friends. Depending on what industry youre in or looking to be in, these platforms can act as a way to casually reach out to people. Making an initial introduction via DM could lead to a more formal email or phone call, particularly if you have mutual friends or followers. It can be as simple as saying something like, “Hi, [their name], hope you are doing well! Im [your name] and I saw that you work in [specific job/role], which is something Im really interested in! [sentence talking about your own experiences] If you have any time, I would love to learn more about what you do. If so, let me know a good way to reach you!”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="BLmmSN">
Meanwhile, professional networking sites like LinkedIn are not only useful for connecting with those in industries like business or tech (amongst others) but also for building a digital presence. Cultivating and updating a profile that reflects your interests, skills, and experiences encourages people and companies to reach out to you — opening yourself up to opportunities you may not even know about.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="OU92cg">
“In a way, access to the internet has further democratized the world, because it has provided opportunities to all,” Smith says. “For minority groups, or those that have traditionally lacked access to social capital, the internet is one way of gaining access to information. Its a way of forming organizations that may not be in your geographic area. In a very real sense, it widens your access to social resources.”

The most competitive statewide races have tightened in the closing weeks of the 2022 midterm elections, and though fears of a “red wave” are growing among Democrats, big GOP wins might not mean that Democrats lose <em>all </em>the statewide races theyre running in. Depending on the strength of that wave, Americans might see the return of what was — until recently — a dying American tradition: split-ticket voting, or electing candidates from different political parties for different statewide, congressional, or presidential races.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="yEKfri">
In nine states, that would look like voters having a senator and a governor (or another office, like secretary of state or US representative) from different political parties. For most of American political history, voting like this wasnt out of the ordinary.

“It reached its height in the mid to late 80s, especially at the federal level, [with] people voting [differently] for president and Congress,” Barry C. Burden, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin Madison, told Vox. But as political polarization, the decline of local news, and the nationalization of local politics have increased in the past two decades, split-ticket voting has been dying a slow death.

“Very few states [have] senators of different parties, and theyre even elected in different years,” Burden, who co-wrote a book on this history, said. “Even the number of split Senate delegations, where senators are from different parties, is now at a relative low.”

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="CKDtXO">
In fact, if the nine states where split statewide tickets are possible this year do vote that way, it would mark a significant departure from current trends: Two states split their tickets in <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2016/11/17/13666192/voting-congress-presidency">2016</a>, voting differently in the presidential, Senate, and governors races; five states elected governors and senators from different parties in <a href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/split-ticket-voting-hit-a-new-low-in-2018-senate-and-governor-races/">2018</a>; and only one state (Maine), voted for Biden but elected a Republican to the Senate — a “modern low,” according to Burden.

There are two states that constantly befuddle laypeople and political nerds alike: New Hampshire and Vermont, which both have a history of wonky politics that allow for a situation where a massively <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2021/05/phil-scott-vermont-republican/618944/">popular Republican governor wins reelection in the bluest state</a>. This year, <strong>Vermont</strong> might end up being the surest state to split its ticket, giving Republican Phil Scott another two-year term while electing Democratic Rep. Peter Welch as the states newest senator. Given that Vermont only has one House seat, Welchs eight terms as Congress member give him a huge leg up in the blue state (hes also facing a conservative Republican), while Scott has won reelection twice before, running as a liberal Republican.

A perennial swing state, its been more likely to split its ticket in recent elections, reelecting Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Gov. Chris Sununu. A popular incumbent due in part to his familys legacy in the state (a former governor as a father and former senator as a brother) and moderate politics, Sununu is again expected to be reelected, while incumbent Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan faces a competitive race that <a href="https://www.cookpolitical.com/ratings/senate-race-ratings">leans Democratic</a>, as she faces an inexperienced, Trumpy opponent, <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/09/don-bolduc-wins-senate-primary.html">Don Bolduc</a>.

Four swing states feature the most competitive races this year, where even the slightest scandal could make all the difference between a split ticket or a sweep. In those states, voters dislike for a candidate might be strong enough to cause them to break with the political party they would usually choose.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="5ou8Q4">
In <strong>Georgia</strong>, most polling shows incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp with a solid lead over Democratic challenger Stacey Abrams and consistently performing better than the Republican Senate candidate, <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2022/10/4/23387712/herschel-walker-georgia-senate-raphael-warnock">Herschel Walker</a>. Here, candidate quality and incumbency seem to be playing a role: Kemp has maintained <a href="https://morningconsult.com/2022/04/28/governor-approval-ratings-2022-election/">relatively</a> high approval ratings in the state (because of both a strong Covid-era economy —<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/04/why-georgia-reopening-coronavirus-pandemic/610882/">he quickly reopened businesses</a> — and <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2022/5/22/23132353/georgia-kemp-trump-perdue-governor-endorsement">his conservative credentials</a>), and has already beaten Abrams once before. Walker is a flawed candidate with <a href="https://poll.qu.edu/poll-release?releaseid=3851">low favorability ratings</a> among all voters, including independents; his most recent abortion scandals havent helped with that perception. People already didnt trust Walker to be <a href="https://poll.qu.edu/poll-release?releaseid=3851">honest</a> <a href="https://www.gpb.org/news/2022/09/21/monmouth-poll-finds-georgians-divided-on-trusting-walker-warnock-handle-key-issues">before</a> revelations that he paid for a woman to have an abortion; a bigger share <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/10/12/walker-abortion-scandal-georgia-senate-race-poll-shows-warnock-lead-.html">now</a> says they dont trust him or dont believe he has good leadership skills. Given Kemps track record and Walkers scandals, voters could default to picking the incumbents they already know.

The opposite dynamic might be playing out in <strong>Pennsylvania</strong>, where most polling shows Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Shapiro outperforming the Democratic Senate candidate, John Fetterman. Both have previously won statewide office, are seen more favorably than their Republican opponents, and have polling leads — but while Shapiros lead has expanded over the last few weeks, Fettermans lead over Republican candidate Mehmet Oz has narrowed. Part of that might be due to previously undecided Republicans “<a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2022/10/13/23401531/fetterman-oz-pennsylvania-senate-polls-crime">coming home</a>” to support their partys candidate, but candidate quality plays a role here, too.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="9BzB3R">
Oz, flawed and <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/john-fetterman-oz-fettermemes-senate">easy to meme</a>, still comes across as a more palatable, traditional Republican candidate than gubernatorial counterpart Doug Mastriano: an <a href="https://www.vox.com/2022/5/20/23132676/doug-mastriano-pennsylvania">election-denying, Christian nationalist</a> who has solidified support among the far right but may be turning off more moderate Republican, suburban, and independent voters in the state due to his strong opposition to abortion, presence at Trumps January 6 rally, and connection to <a href="https://www.msnbc.com/the-reidout/reidout-blog/gab-republicans-andrew-torba-blake-masters-rcna42628">extremist figures</a>. Though Oz may be appealing to those voters, they might be more comfortable with a known figure for governor: Shapiro was popular as attorney general, and he has been running a <a href="https://www.abc27.com/pennsylvania-governor-election-2022/ap-shapiro-wages-drama-free-pa-campaign-amid-big-personalities/">low-key</a>, mostly positive campaign. If that breakdown sounds unusual, take it directly from one of those voters: the now-viral<a href="https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1582727447774396417?s=20&amp;t=ISgymn0XEzj02hPBqGbqSQ"> 25-year-old from Pittsburgh</a> who is hoping for a Democratic governor and a Republican senator.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="TIaRKB">
<strong>Arizona </strong>has a similar dynamic: Incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly has been overperforming in the newest swing state due in part to the poor perception voters have of his opponent, the far-right Republican candidate Blake Masters. Masters, an anti-abortion, election denier with a history of <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/08/blake-masters-has-a-lot-of-thoughts-about-black-people.html">questionable statements</a>, has not led in any <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2022/senate/az/arizona-senate-masters-vs-kelly-7390.html#polls">recent polling</a>, while Kelly, who won a special election in 2020 by a better margin than Biden won the state, benefits from name recognition, independent personal popularity, and <a href="https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2022/10/17/kelly-continues-to-raise-like-a-maniac-dwarfing-masters-in-senate-race/">fundraising prowess</a>. Hes been outraising and outspending Masters, who has struggled to get <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/09/20/slf-arizona-senate-funding/">national Republican support</a> this year.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ECBB4D">
The gubernatorial contest, however, is much closer. The right-wing, Trump-loyalist former TV news anchor Kari Lake has been leading her Democratic opponent, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, in most recent polling, and seems to be running one of the most unconventional campaigns in Arizona history: calling out the states Republican establishment, declining to hire a traditional campaign staff, and going with her gut <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/10/06/kari-lakes-arizona-campaign-looks-like-nothing-weve-seen-before-00060596">instead of hiring pollsters</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="VfFRUg">
Candidate quality matters again: Lake is just as extreme as Masters, if not more so, but is much more of an <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2022/10/kari-lake-arizona-governor-trump-2022-election/671679/">exciting figure</a> to her base than Hobbs is to hers or Masters to his. Shes a gifted public speaker (decades of TV experience will do that for you) and commands the direction of every conversation she engages — “Trump with media training and polish,” the Washington Posts <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/10/16/kari-lake-arizona-election-governor/">Ruby Cramer calls her</a>. She seems to be holding together much of the states Republican coalition through a combination of 2020 election fraud claims, harping on inflation and Arizonas affordability crisis, and old-fashioned personality politics (like calling Hobbs a “coward opponent” for not debating her). As a result, shes lifting up a pack of 2020 election-denying statewide candidates down-ballot.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="1zEWEa">
In those races, for Arizona secretary of state and attorney general, election deniers Mark Finchem and Abe Hamadeh are running slightly ahead of their Democratic opponents. Republicans have also held the governors office since 2009, and up until 2018, Arizona was a reliably Republican state — so enough voters who find Kelly to be an appealing candidate may still default to voting Republican down-ballot.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="yry8be">
Finally, <strong>Nevada</strong> seems to be the state where Democrats are <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/23402652/catherine-cortez-masto-nevada-senate">most likely</a> to be swept away by a red wave, where the fundamentals of a midterm election as a referendum on the party in power might be too toxic for any Democrat to survive. Still, incumbent Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto is running a strong campaign and performing slightly better than <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2022/governor/nv/nevada_governor_lombardo_vs_sisolak-7394.html">incumbent</a> Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak. Among the issues that Cortez Masto has brought to the center of her campaign, like inflation and abortion rights, is the “Big Lie” that Trump won the 2020 election. Thats because of the central role that her opponent, former state Attorney General Adam Laxalt, played in trying to <a href="https://www.nevadacurrent.com/2022/10/19/adam-laxalt-trumpism-and-the-big-lie-an-updated-chronology/">delegitimize</a> Nevadas election results, serving as the Trump campaigns Nevada co-chair and spokesperson while holding <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?477825-1/trump-campaign-alleges-voter-fraud-nevada-files-lawsuit-stop-vote-count">press conferences</a> to boost false voter fraud claims and spreading claims of fraud on <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamLaxalt/status/1326215395758501888">TV</a>, <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/opinion/commentary-making-sure-that-only-real-votes-count-2185695/">internet</a>, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flC1_oYfT3I">radio</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="njpKFm">
Laxalt has tried to stay out of the mainstream spotlight (almost exclusively doing interviews with right-leaning outlets) but still carries a lot of baggage. Though he was elected attorney general after Cortez Masto served two terms, he lost in the 2018 governors race to Sisolak by a whopping (by Nevada standards) 4 percentage points, or 40,000 votes. This time, Sisolak faces a more conventional Republican candidate: Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo. Despite some missteps and a tightly contested Republican primary, Lombardo has managed to unite Republicans, with help from Trump. That might result in a Laxalt loss but a Lombardo win.

<strong>States where politicians are the face of issues that have voters upset </strong>
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="sVN3Wc">
Elections in three other states might also hinge primarily on the issues that are unfolding in the state.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="1ajNAM">
In <strong>Oregon</strong>, frustration with housing affordability, crime, and homelessness helped drive down the term-limited current Gov. Kate Browns approval rating to the <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2022/05/new-poll-finds-kate-brown-is-nations-least-popular-governor.html">lowest in the country</a>. Her partys candidate to succeed her, Tina Kotek, is similarly weighed down by frustration with the status quo and her ties to the Democratic establishment in the state. But these issues have also led to a gush of Democratic support to a moderate independent candidate, Betsy Johnson, a former Democrat who is pulling support away from Kotek among disgruntled Oregonians. That could lead to the election of Republican Christine Drazan, who would be the first Republican governor in Oregon since the 1980s. No similar dynamic is playing out in the states Senate race, where incumbent Ron Wyden is a shoo-in for reelection.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Kyh81V">
In <strong>Wisconsin</strong>, meanwhile, abortion, crime, and policing are playing a central role in both marquee statewide races. In his reelection effort, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers is highlighting his defense of abortion rights and kitchen-table issues, like expanding broadband internet, against a Trump-backed challenger, Tim Michels. The race is much more competitive than the states Senate contest, where incumbent Ron Johnson, long seen as one of the most vulnerable Republicans on the ballot this year, looks more likely to win reelection. Hes been centering crime and his opponents progressivism as liabilities: <a href="https://madison.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/elections/ad-wars-while-ron-johnson-went-negative-mandela-barnes-made-peanut-butter-sandwiches/article_9846608a-46fb-51f2-917a-d6b545523ee4.html">In TV ads that have blanketed the state</a>, Johnson portrays Mandela Barnes, the states lieutenant governor, as a “radical leftist” for his history of backing more progressive policing. The negative ads have contributed toward an <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/10/12/poll-johnson-widens-the-lead-over-barnes-for-senate-seat-in-wisconsin-00061518">expanding lead</a>, and though still seen as a toss-up race, <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2022/senate/wi/wisconsin_senate_johnson_vs_barnes-7758.html#polls">almost every poll</a> since September has shown Johnson beating Barnes. Those attacks, coupled with the advantage of incumbency, could mean Evers ends up narrowly winning, while Barnes loses.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="xE87fo">
<strong>Kansas</strong> presents another opportunity for ticket-splitting: Republican Sen. Jerry Moran is cruising to victory in his bid for his third term, but the states Democratic governor, Laura Kelly, is fighting to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/18/us/politics/laura-kelly-kansas-governor-democrats.html">make politics local</a> and win reelection by <a href="https://www.laurakellyforkansas.com/2022/10/the-road-ahead-governor-laura-kellys-plan-to-strengthen-the-kansas-economy/">focusing</a> on cutting taxes, increasing spending on education, building affordable housing, and expanding access to high-speed internet. Unlike in any other state, her opponent, Attorney General Derek Schmidt, is trying to make her talk about abortion as she resists, and she tries to focus voters minds on her plans for education and the states economy. Though the state voted overwhelmingly to protect abortion rights this summer, the issue was seen through a local lens — the same way Kelly wants to be judged instead of being tied to national politics. That strategy may work — and show the limits of nationalizing politics.
