<li><strong>Serology assays used in SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence surveys worldwide: a systematic review and meta-analysis of assay features, testing algorithms, and performance</strong> -
<div>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
Background: Many SARS-CoV-2 serological assays were rapidly developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, differences in detection mechanism limit the comparability of assay outputs. Methods: As part of the SeroTracker global living systematic review of SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence studies, we collated serological assays used in serosurveys between January 1, 2020 and November 19, 2021. We mapped performance metrics to the manufacturer, third-party head-to-head, and independent group evaluations, comparing the assay performance data using a mixed-effect beta regression model. Results: Among 1807 serosurveys, 192 distinctive commercial assays and 380 self-developed assays were identified. According to manufacturers, 28.6% of all commercial assays met WHO criteria for emergency use (sensitivity [Sn.] &gt;= 90.0%, specificity [Sp.] &gt;= 97.0%). Third-party and independent evaluations indicated that manufacturers overstated the Sn. of their assays by 5.4% and 2.8%, and Sp. by 6.3% and 1.2%. We found in simulations that inaccurate Sn. and Sp. can substantially bias seroprevalence estimates corrected for assay performance. Conclusions: The Sn. and Sp. of the serological assay are not fixed properties, but varying features depending on testing population. To achieve precise population estimates and to ensure comparability, serosurveys should select assays with strong, independently validated performance and adjust seroprevalence estimates based on assured performance data.

<li><strong>Stability of SARS-CoV-2 spike antigens against mutations</strong> -
<div>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
Modern health care needs preventive vaccines and therapeutic treatments with stability against pathogen mutations to cope with current and future viral infections. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our analytic and predictive tool identified a set of eight short SARS-CoV-2 S-spike protein epitopes that had the potential to persistently avoid mutation. Here a combination of genetic, Systems Biology and protein structure analyses confirm the stability of our identified epitopes against viral mutations. Remarkably, this research spans the whole period of the pandemic, during which 93.9% of the eight peptides remained invariable in the globally predominant 43 circulating variants, including Omicron. Likewise, the selected epitopes are conserved in 97% of all 1,514 known SARS-CoV-2 lineages. Finally, experimental analyses performed with these short peptides showed their specific immunoreactivity. This work opens a new perspective on the design of next-generation vaccines and antibody therapies that will remain reliable against future pathogen mutations.

<li><strong>The SARS-CoV-2 spike N-terminal domain engages 9-O-acetylated α2-8-linked sialic acids</strong> -
<div>
SARS-CoV-2 viruses engage ACE2 as a functional receptor with their spike protein. The S1 domain of the spike protein contains a C-terminal receptor-binding domain (RBD) and an N-terminal domain (NTD). The NTD of other coronaviruses includes a glycan-binding cleft. However, for the SARS-CoV-2 NTD protein-glycan binding was only observed weakly for sialic acids with highly sensitive methods. Amino acid changes in the NTD of Variants of Concern (VoC) shows antigenic pressure, which can be an indication of NTD-mediated receptor binding. Trimeric NTD proteins of SARS-CoV-2, Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron did not reveal a receptor binding capability. Unexpectedly, the SARS-CoV-2 Beta subvariant strain (501Y.V2-1) NTD binding to Vero E6 cells was sensitive to sialidase pretreatment. Glycan microarray analyses identified a putative 9-O-acetylated sialic acid as a ligand, which was confirmed by catch-and-release ESI-MS, STD-NMR analyses, and a graphene-based electrochemical sensor. The Beta (501Y.V2-1) variant attained an enhanced glycan binding modality in the NTD with specificity towards 9-O-acetylated structures, suggesting a dual-receptor functionality of the SARS-CoV-2 S1 domain, which was quickly selected against. These results indicate that SARS-CoV-2 can probe additional evolutionary space, allowing binding to glycan receptors on the surface of target cells.

<li><strong>Genetic control of the dynamic transcriptional response to immune stimuli and glucocorticoids at single cell resolution</strong> -
<div>
Synthetic glucocorticoids, such as dexamethasone, have been used as treatment for many immune conditions, such as asthma and more recently severe COVID-19. Single cell data can capture more fine-grained details on transcriptional variability and dynamics to gain a better understanding of the molecular underpinnings of inter-individual variation in drug response. Here, we used single cell RNA-seq to study the dynamics of the transcriptional response to glucocorticoids in activated Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells from 96 African American children. We employed novel statistical approaches to calculate a mean-independent measure of gene expression variability and a measure of transcriptional response pseudotime. Using these approaches, we demonstrated that glucocorticoids reverse the effects of immune stimulation on both gene expression mean and variability. Our novel measure of gene expression response dynamics, based on the diagonal linear discriminant analysis, separated individual cells by response status on the basis of their transcriptional profiles and allowed us to identify different dynamic patterns of gene expression along the response pseudotime. We identified genetic variants regulating gene expression mean and variability, including treatment-specific effects, and demonstrated widespread genetic regulation of the transcriptional dynamics of the gene expression response.

<li><strong>TECHNOLOGY BASED LEARNING MODEL DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC</strong> -
<div>
The Covid-19 pandemic has not been completely handled in almost every country in the world up until the end of 2020, its impact was felt by Indonesia. The major changes that continue to occur in all aspects of human life are also targeting the education system. Changes in the education system in Indonesia have a very significant effect on learning and students, where students experience difficulties in following the learning process, especially students at the elementary level. It can be ascertained that the cause is due to the fact that learning is usually carried out conventionally, dominance is still centralized on the educators, and the models used do not vary much. Within a short time period and without preparation, learning must be adapted to the needs, situations and conditions, so that learning can still be carried out. Distance learning process (Pembelajaran Jarak Jauh) using online modes is expected to bridge the relationship and communication between educators and students so that the learning process does not experience obstacles. To make Distance Education implemented optimally, Distance Education cannot be separated from the utilization of Information Technology. This article aims to examine further how the implementation of Distance Education relies on technology, as well as the use of appropriate learning models for students during the Covid-19 pandemic, using descriptive-analytical literature methods. The results and conclusions in this paper indicate that technology-based learning has an important role in the implementation of learning, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. The management and implementation of technology-based learning is very dependent on Information Technology, facilitating educators so that the continuity of interaction between educators and students does not face any problems. It is hoped that the competence of educators in managing Distance Education using online modes is expected to be continually developed by utilizing various learning models, so that the learning process can be optimized. Although in its implementation there are still several obstacles related to academic culture, including values, attitudes, knowledge, skills, and readiness of technology-related facilities and infrastructure, education management by utilizing various learning models and supporting technology can be one of the solutions in facing challenges of Distance Education during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

<li><strong>Examining the influence of user engagement on tourist virtual reality behavioral response from the human-computer interaction perspective: A PLSSEM-IMP-NN hybrid machine learning approach</strong> -
<div>
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, new attraction ways are tended to be adapted by compelling sites to provide tours product and services, such as virtual reality (VR) to visitors. Based on human-computer interaction (HCI) user engagement and domain segmentation innovativeness theory, we develop and test a theoretical framework using a hybrid partial least squares structural equation model (PLSSEM) with Importance Performance Matrix (IMP) and neural network machine learning approach (PLSSEM-IMP-NN) that examines key user engagement drivers of visitors attitude toward VR (ATT) and in-person tour intentions (ITI) during COVID-19. According to a sample of visitors response, the results demonstrate that a) user engagement including aesthetic appeal, focused attention, perceived usability, and reward experience, raise attitude toward VR; b) product-possessing innovativeness positively moderates the relationships between ATT and ITI; c) information-possessing innovativeness negatively moderates the relationships between ATT and ITI; d) ATT exert the mediating effect between user engagement and ITI. The proposed new PLSSEM-IMP-NN approach has been examined and denotes its efficient and effective in HCI and behavioral response assessment. Other contributions to theories and practical implications are discussed accordingly.

<li><strong>Private sector involvement in social and affordable housing</strong> -
<div>
This research investigates models for engaging private sector investors and developers in financing or delivering social and affordable housing, across different market segments and tenures in Australia and internationally. It also identifies key existing and potential players, and financial, regulatory, or development barriers to wider participation. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, around 3,000 social and affordable dwellings were being produced per year, against an estimated annual need of around 36,000 homes. To meet the forecast demand, it is clear hybridity of the housing system is essential, whereby social and affordable housing is increasingly financed, developed and managed by a combination of government, community-based and market providers, and cross-sector partnerships; no one sector can address the need alone. This study highlighted that a range of established and emerging affordable housing product types can be supported through collaboration with private not-for-profit and for-profit partners. These strategies include public private partnerships, mixed tenure developments, tax subsidies for affordable supply, home ownership schemes, build to rent and inclusionary planning mechanisms. These depend on different combinations of government subsidy, policy settings, and regulation, and are suitable for delivery across a variety of different development contexts.

<li><strong>Misleading Beyond Visual Tricks: How People Actually Lie with Charts</strong> -
<div>
Data visualizations can empower an audience to make informed decisions. At the same time, deceptive representations of data can lead to inaccurate interpretations while still providing an illusion of data-driven insights. Existing research on misleading visualizations primarily focuses on examples of charts and techniques previously reported to be deceptive. These approaches do not necessarily describe how charts mislead the general population in practice. We instead present an analysis of data visualizations found in a real-world discourse of a significant global event—Twitter posts with visualizations related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our work shows that, contrary to conventional wisdom, violations of visualization design guidelines are not the dominant way people mislead with charts. Specifically, they do not disproportionately lead to reasoning errors in posters arguments. Through a series of examples, we present common reasoning errors and discuss how even faithfully plotted data visualizations can be used to support misinformation online.

<li><strong>Joko Widodo Views on Womens Interests Before and During the Pandemic Based on Social-Media</strong> -
<div>
The COVID-19 Pandemic has had many impacts on Indonesian women. As one of the pilot countries for the HeForShe project campaigned by UN Women, it is interesting to analyze how the President of Indonesia responds to this phenomenon. Many studies focus on the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on women. But, there is a lack of research on how the government responds to womens interests during the Pandemic compared to the situation before the Pandemic. Using a qualitative approach, this study analyses how the President of Indonesia views womens interests before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Two official social-media of the President of Republic Indonesia Joko Widodo: The Official Twitter Account of the President of Indonesia @jokowi and The Official Facebook Account of The President of Indonesia @Jokowi · Minat are used as the primary data sources. The findings indicate that before the COVID-19 Pandemic, President Joko Widodo gave significant attention to strategic womens interests such as subordination and gender equality. But the situation changed during the Pandemic. The President views the fulfillment of daily needs such as food and health as more urgent for women in the COVID-19 Pandemic than strategic interests. This study highlights that in a crisis, the focus of the government policy is safe for the people first (women and men) to fulfill their basic needs. The gender equality agenda is becoming marginalized.

<li><strong>The Effect of Chairobic Dance Program on Cardiorespiratory Endurance in Faculty of Education Staff, Thaksin University</strong> -
<div>
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all aspects of daily life, especially exercise, where restrictions on location, time, and work can make exercise even more difficult. Hence, this study aims to create a Chairobic dance program dancing with a chair that uses few spaces, able to sit and dance in your chair. It was developed from the aerobics dance. In addition, to compare the effect of the Chairobic dance program on Cardiorespiratory endurance before and after training. The target group is 24 staff of the Faculty of Education at Thaksin University. The participants were trained through a Chairobic dance program created by the researcher for eight weeks (3 days/week, i.e., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). They have to practice 45 minutes a day after work. The Cardiorespiratory endurance was tested using a 3-minute knee-up and down test and compared before and after eight weeks of training by the Pair t-test statistics. The results showed that in the Chairobic dance program created by the researcher, there is an IOC (Index of Item-Objective Congruence) in the range of 0.6 -1.00, which is acceptable and usable. In addition, the target group had better Cardiorespiratory endurance than before training. Therefore, It will be helpful for anyone interested in an alternative to exercise. This is because it takes up less space, is convenient to exercise, fun, and can develop Cardiorespiratory endurance.

<li><strong>Did the pandemic increase social media-induced appearance pressures? A longitudinal analysis of social media caused appearance-related pressures before and during the Covid-19 pandemic</strong> -
<div>
Has the use of social media intensified and increased appearance-related pressures during the Covid-19 pandemic? A growing body of research has suggested that body image concerns and disordered eating have increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the potential pathways includes an increase in social media use. However, examinations of this pathway have been limited because of the lack of longitudinal data. Drawing on a four-wave population-based survey, we demonstrate that social media-based appearance pressures did not increase at the beginning of the pandemic, but rather at the later stage, and among women only. However, the changes in social media use do not explain this subtle increase. These findings suggest that other pathways than intensified use of social media might be more useful in explaining increased appearance-related pressures during the Covid-19 pandemic.

<div>
Background: Kerala state in India has been hailed as an exceptional model in containing the Covid 19 pandemic within a low resource setting Insights from such a setting are valuable for mental health research during an epidemic situation, especially for resource poor countries. Aims:The study examined the relationship between optimism intolerance of uncertainty (IU), and socio- demographic factors among participants from Kerala, India. Methods: An observational design was used and data was collected using online survey. Snowball sampling method was employed. Sample consisted of 121 adults belonging to Kerala. Standardised tools and customised questionnaire were used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed. Results: A strong relationship existed between inhibitory anxiety and optimism. Socio-demographic factors did not determine either intolerance of uncertainty or optimism. The unprecedented uncertainty brought about by the pandemic needs further exploration. Conclusions: The present pandemic has presented an unprecedented situation regarding well being of individuals. Further studies on anxiety and related issues, and protective factors during situations of uncertainty are needed for policy and practice related to community level disaster preparedness.

<li><strong>Broad SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization by Monoclonal and Bispecific Antibodies Derived from a Gamma-infected Individual</strong> -
<div>
The worldwide pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has remained a human medical threat due to the continued evolution of multiple variants that acquire resistance to vaccines and prior infection. Therefore, it is imperative to discover monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that neutralize a broad range of SARS-CoV-2 variants for therapeutic and prophylactic use. A stabilized autologous SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein was used to enrich antigen-specific B cells from an individual with a primary Gamma variant infection. Five mAbs selected from those B cells showed considerable neutralizing potency against multiple variants of concern, with COVA309-35 being the most potent against the autologous virus, as well as against Omicron BA.1 and BA.2. When combining the COVA309 mAbs as cocktails or bispecific antibody formats, the breadth and potency was significantly improved against all tested variants. In addition, the mechanism of cross-neutralization of the COVA309 mAbs was elucidated by structural analysis. Altogether these data indicate that a Gamma-infected individual can develop broadly neutralizing antibodies.

<li><strong>Computational Prediction of Binding Affinities of Human Angiotensin Converting Enzyme-2 with SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein Variants: Omicron Variants and Potentially Deleterious Mutations</strong> -
<div>
The Omicron variant (BA.1) and its sub-variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes the COVID-19 disease continues to spread across the United States and the World at large. As new sub-variants of SARS-CoV-2 continue to proliferate, a reliable computational method of quickly determining the potential infectivity of these new variants is needed to assess their potential threat. In the present study, we have tested and validated an efficient computational protocol, which includes an efficient energy minimization and subsequent molecular mechanics/Poisson Boltzmann surface area (MM-PBSA) calculation of the binding free energy between the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and human angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE2), to predict the binding affinities of these spike/ACE2 complexes based upon the calculated binding free energies and a previously calibrated linear correlation relationship. The predicted binding affinities are in good agreement with available experimental data including those for Omicron variants, suggesting that the predictions based on this protocol should be reasonable. Further, we have investigated several hundred potential mutations of both the wildtype and Omicron variants of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Based on the predicted binding affinity data, we have identified several mutations that have the potential to vastly increase the binding affinity of the spike protein to ACE2 within both the wildtype and Omicron variants.

<li><strong>TCID50 Measurements of anti-viral efficacy on metal printed masks and plastic surfaces</strong> -
<div>
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has created a need for effective personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent viral spread. PPE like face masks contain the spread of virus-filled droplets and thus reduce infection rates, has been a critical tool in stopping the spread of SARS-CoV-2. PET plastic barriers have also been used in public settings to reduce face to face viral transmission. However, in some cases, they have provided additional contact with the virus due to contamination. In order study, we evaluated the effectiveness of face masks and PET plastics coated in different metals in reducing viral load. We compared PPE printed with silver, copper, or zinc for their ability to inactivate live human coronavirus HCoV 229E. Our results show that silver and copper have significant anti-viral efficacy when printed on nonwoven fabric compared to the controls. The metal-printed PET showed around 70% anti-viral efficacy with any formulations, with copper performing the best. This work builds more data to support the development of metal printed materials for enhanced protection against coronaviruses.

How to budget, make a phone call, and other important life skills you should know.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="nMXF3E">
When Genevieve Bellaire graduated from law school in 2015 at 26 years old, she had acquired ample knowledge of case law, but didnt really understand the deal with health insurance, taxes, or how to find an apartment. What were all these forms she was being asked to complete at her new job? How do you set up a 401(k)? “I found that I just really didnt have the answer,” Bellaire says, “and oftentimes, didnt even know the question to ask to make smart decisions.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="sRkyin">
Bellaire realized many young people were similarly ill-equipped to deal with the realities of adulthood. According to <a href="https://swnsdigital.com/us/2021/07/eighty-one-percent-of-recent-college-graduates-wish-they-were-taught-more-life-skills-before-graduating/">a 2021 survey</a> of recent US college grads, 81 percent wished they were taught more life skills before they graduated. After years of following a syllabus, there are few instructions for how to get your act together outside the confines of a classroom or your parents home, she thought. In 2021, Bellaire launched Realworld, an app designed to answer those same adulting questions for its user base of over 100,000.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="cEAJRZ">
The responsibilities newly independent adults face are vast, and range from hard skills, like budgeting, to soft skills, like relationship deftness. Everyones experience on the road to adulthood wont mirror Bellaires exactly — maybe youve been working full time since before leaving home; maybe you didnt pursue higher education; maybe youre the primary caregiver for your parents, siblings, or children. Regardless of your situation, there are common responsibilities and skills that can be mystifying if youve never heard of them before or were never taught. You dont need to be an expert in all aspects of adulting (and many of these topics are expansive and complicated), but experts say having some baseline knowledge about key subjects will help make the transition into self-reliance a little smoother.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="oXn61B">
These tips are meant as a general framework rather than a purely prescriptive guide, since so much of how you approach finances and relationships depends on your situation — so come up with systems that work for you.
</p>
<h3 id="Z3A5MM">
Budgeting and finances
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="NwBdts">
Realworld users are consistently most concerned about budgeting, Bellaire says. Surveys show Gen Z Americans are <a href="https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/generation-z-money-survey/">anxious about their finances</a> yet <a href="https://mint.intuit.com/blog/budgeting/spending-knowledge-survey/">dont know how much they spend in a given month</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="DL1MuO">
Budgeting doesnt need to be complicated. First, determine how much money you take home every month. This is the amount of money you earn after taxes, social security, health insurance, and retirement are taken from your paycheck. This is easier to calculate if you have a salary or work a set amount of hours each week, and your employer already removes these deductions. If youre a freelancer or contract employee, <a href="https://www.keepertax.com/self-employment-tax-rate-calculator">set aside</a> <a href="https://www.thebalancemoney.com/how-much-do-i-budget-for-taxes-as-a-freelancer-453676">20 to 30 percent</a> of your earnings for taxes.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="A3P7O3">
Next, tally up your expenses. This includes rent or mortgage, utility bills, student loans, health insurance premiums (if you pay for health insurance independently), food, transportation, car insurance, child care, and any other bills.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="LRcwfw">
From there, youll need to figure out how youre going to allocate your income to cover your expenses and beyond. Bellaire is a proponent of the <a href="https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/finance/nerdwallet-budget-calculator">50/30/20 budget</a>, in which 50 percent of your income goes to needs (housing, food, transportation, child care, utilities), 30 percent goes to wants (streaming subscriptions, dining out, concerts, entertainment), and 20 percent goes to yourself (savings account, retirement account, paying off debt). These breakdowns wont work for everyones circumstances, especially if you financially support other people, but you should have a general idea of how much youre spending versus bringing in.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="79KRcO">
Its also worth incorporating some buffer money, says Alyssa Mairanz, founder of the online platform and e-course <a href="https://adultingintherealworld.com/">Adulting In The Real World</a>. “Not every month is going to be the exact same expenses,” she says. “Things come out of the blue.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ajb0fu">
You can track your budget in a spreadsheet, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/best-budgeting-apps">budgeting app</a> or go old-school with a notebook.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="zB2jyF">
If you can, start saving for retirement, Bellaire says. Read through any materials given to you by your employer if youre enrolling in their 401(k) plan. Mairanz suggests seeking out a <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/050815/what-do-financial-advisers-do.asp">financial adviser</a> who can offer financial advice and can help with retirement planning. (Just be aware of <a href="https://money.usnews.com/financial-advisors/articles/financial-advisor-fees-and-costs">how they get paid</a>: through a fee or commission.)
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="NZmKGr">
Young adults should also know their credit score, Bellaire says. Your <a href="https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/what-is-a-credit-score-en-315/">credit score</a> measures your trustworthiness as a consumer and the likelihood of you paying back a loan. “We like to call it the GPA of the real world,” Bellaire says. “Its the most important three-digit number that can have a big impact on your ability to rent an apartment, to buy a house, buy a car, even get a job.” Yes, the calculation for determining a credit score is <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/22736387/how-credit-scores-work-equifax-experian-transunion">discriminatory and arbitrary</a>, but its still a figure worth having in your back pocket. You can check <a href="https://www.usa.gov/credit-reports/">your credit report online</a> to keep tabs on your credit score.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="hDnB7q">
Young people may not have credit and will need to build it in order to get a loan or rent an apartment. You can <a href="https://www.bankrate.com/personal-finance/credit/how-to-build-credit/">build credit</a> by <a href="https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/finance/how-to-build-credit">getting a credit card</a>, or becoming an authorized user on your parents card, and setting up automatic payments. Sometimes, putting a major expense, like a medical bill, on a credit card is unavoidable, but if you can, try to avoid making major purchases on a credit card. Try to pay back your credit card bills in full if you can; interest will accrue quickly and you dont want to struggle for years with paying off credit card debt.
</p>
<h3 id="efyweK">
Health insurance
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="rOe9on">
Young people can stay on their parents health insurance until theyre 26, but may choose to get their own insurance if their parents are not insured, they prefer to join their company plan, or they purchase their own insurance through <a href="http://HealthCare.gov">HealthCare.gov</a>, the health insurance marketplace. (<a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/quick-guide/dates-and-deadlines/">Open enrollment through the marketplace</a> is November 1, 2022, through January 15, 2023.)
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="qUvg08">
If youre covered under your workplace plan, double check the dates for open enrollment and if you need to reelect coverage each year. If you lost coverage, got married, or had a baby and need to change your coverage during the year, you qualify for a <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/special-enrollment-period/">special enrollment period</a> and can make those changes.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="nsfkaO">
When youre shopping for plans or making selections on your company plan, youre going to need to learn some lingo. “People need to understand deductibles,” Mairanz says. A deductible is what you pay when you see a doctor who is covered by your insurance before your insurance starts to pay. If your <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/deductible/#:~:text=The%20amount%20you%20pay%20for,insurance%20plan%20starts%20to%20pay.">deductible</a> is $2,000, youll need to pay for $2,000 worth of services by an in-network provider. After you hit your deductible, youll pay a copay or coinsurance for covered services and the insurance company will pay the rest. Most health insurance plans cover <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/coverage/preventive-care-benefits/">preventive services</a>, like shots and screenings, for free before youve met your deductible.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="iNOvBn">
If youve met your deductible and have continued paying copayments until youve reached your <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/premium/">out-of-pocket maximum</a>, you wont have to pay for anything else after that; your insurance plan will. Another term worth knowing is <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/premium/">premium</a>, the amount you pay every month for health insurance coverage.
</p>

Should you receive a massive medical bill by surprise, Elise, co-host of the podcast <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kindaadultingpod/?hl=en"><em>Kinda Adulting</em></a>, suggests calling your medical provider and requesting a payment plan instead of paying the large sum at once — or worse, not paying it at all. “Because it will get to collections,” says Elise, who, along with her co-hosts, Jordan and Simone, asked that their last names not be used in order to avoid conflicts with their employers. Also, she says, make sure you have your health insurance card ready when dealing with doctors offices and billing departments.

Cooking basics
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ab2Qjp">
A major part of living away from your parents is knowing how to feed yourself. Mairanz suggests always keeping your kitchen stocked with the basics of your typical diet. (Meaning, if youre gluten-intolerant or dairy-free, you wont want to stock up on bread or milk even if they are considered staples.) This can include eggs, pasta, chicken, and frozen veggies. Make sure you have the appropriate tools to make these foods, too: frying pan, pots, microwave, baking tray.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="rsUhJb">
Beyond having the necessary equipment, think about your lifestyle and what kind of cooking habits youll have. If you work two jobs and only have time to pick up a bite on the go, you might be better suited allocating your food budget for takeout, premade meals, or kits. If you genuinely enjoy cooking and food shopping, your dollars will go further at the grocery store. “A lot of it gets back to budgeting to where youre putting your dollar and your time budget as well,” Bellaire says.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="YH1pgs">
Accustomed to grocery shopping with her family, Jordan, of the <em>Kinda Adulting</em> podcast, had to learn to shop and cook for one once she moved out on her own. Buying in bulk and storing copious leftovers occupies precious space in what may be a small apartment and refrigerator, so only buy what you need to feed yourself for the week. “Look on YouTube so you can see how people are preparing things if you dont have somebody that you can learn from in person,” Jordan says. Elise frequently uses <a href="https://www.hellofresh.com/recipes">HelloFresh recipes</a> for inspiration, since theyre often portioned for a single diner, and then purchases the ingredients on her own.

Making a phone call
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="S6qLMN">
A popular topic in Mairanzs adulting course is how to make a phone call. “Were in more of a digital age and with online booking and texting, people talk on the phone less,” she says, “but there are times that this is something that has to be done.” From doctors appointments to customer service requests, feeling comfortable talking to another human on the phone is a must.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="gJhmgL">
Mairanz suggests writing down the main points you want to discuss in the call ahead of time and to be prepared for either talking to another person or leaving a voicemail. Your script can be as simple as “Hi, Im a customer and I just received a bill that I think is incorrect. Could I speak to someone who can review and explain my bill?” Be prepared with your account information and questions about next steps.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="JWD0RZ">
For voicemails, Elise suggests leaving your full name, repeating your phone number twice, your email address, and the reason for your call.

If youve been living at home for a significant chunk of time, youve developed set patterns and dynamics. Maybe your parents always bought the groceries and did your laundry; there were expectations and standards. On your own, youre going to need to rebuild these frameworks.

Regardless if youre living with roommates, a partner, or solo, have a discussion both with your housemates and with yourself about how your home is going to operate, says clinical psychologist <a href="https://www.drjamiegoldstein.com/">Jamie Goldstein</a>, author of <a href="https://bookshop.org/books/how-to-adult-a-practical-guide-advice-on-living-loving-working-and-spending-like-a-grown-up/9781647397210"><em>How to Adult, A Practical Guide: Advice on Living, Loving, Working, and Spending Like a Grown-Up</em>.</a> When are cleaning days? When will you go food shopping? What day are you doing laundry? What guests are able to visit and how long are you comfortable with them staying? “That structure can then follow you out into the world of other dynamics that youre navigating,” she says.

Interpersonal skills
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="mBV1eU">
Early adulthood comes with many new faces and responsibilities. For those first moving out of their parents house, theyre <a href="https://www.vox.com/even-better/23279320/roommate-tips-getting-along-chores">navigating living with new people</a>. Professional environments place people of different ages, experience levels, and backgrounds in one place. <a href="https://www.vox.com/23184875/dating-pandemic-tips-better-dater">Dating as an adult</a> is rife with interpersonal misfires. One of the greatest skills young people can have is learning how to navigate these relationships, Goldstein says.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="c7M7wv">
Two keys to navigating the murky waters of real-world conversations, Goldstein says, are to engage with curiosity and learning to deal with discomfort. Some conversations will be hard, but she advises entering them not by accusing another person, but by hearing them out and learning from their experience. “The world of adulting can be a really uncomfortable place to be, and youre navigating all of these relationships and situations that bring you a heck of a lot of discomfort,” she says. “Discomfort of figuring out your budget, discomfort of how am I going to split groceries with roommates, discomfort of these <a href="https://www.vox.com/even-better/23161444/splitting-home-chores-unfair-equitable">dishes have to get done</a>, but theyre not my dishes, and how do we deal with that and talk about that?”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="n15UJ2">
Goldstein is also a proponent of running your errands in person instead of shopping online, to get the benefit of interacting with others. Theres value in feeling confident approaching an employee at a store to ask if they have a shirt in your size or if theres a restroom available. Youre practicing asking questions and potentially hearing “no” and troubleshooting from there.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Puf73J">
When youre engaging with store employees or customer service reps, maintain your composure even if youre frustrated and feel like your requests are not being met, says Simone, another co-host of <em>Kinda Adulting</em>. “My mom always tells me to ignore attitudes,” Simone says. “I just keep going on with what I have to do. Thats a part of adulting: youre dealing with [customer] service all the time, and a lot of times its not the best and you have something to accomplish.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="1iiUiN">
These skills arent as easily Google-able as budgeting spreadsheets, but are equally as important to living a successful adult life. Because these conversations and relationships are so difficult, you might stumble and say something you regret, or act in a way that exacerbates the problem. Be kind to yourself and others when these missteps occur (because they will). Another thing they dont teach you in school: even in adulthood, everyones still learning.

The biggest political event of the year is happening this weekend — and its not an election.

The stakes of what happens during this Congress for China and the rest of the world will probably be the most momentous in decades. China has changed dramatically under Xis now <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2022-xi-jinping-chongqing-ccp/?sref=qYiz2hd0">decade-long rule</a>. Despite its <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2020/04/chinas-early-covid-19-struggles-have-an-all-too-mundane-explanation/">initial missteps</a> in containing the virus, Chinas <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23057000/beijing-covid-zero-lockdown-china-pandemic">zero-Covid guidelines</a> succeeded at limiting mortality from Covid-19 compared to many other countries, though that success has come with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/01/world/asia/china-covid-zero.html">serious economic and political side effects</a>. China also transformed its foreign policy and became the worlds largest creditor with <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23279714/biden-global-infrastructure-development-g7-china-belt-road-explained">the Belt and Road Initiative</a>, a massive global infrastructure and development program.

During Xis time in power, however, China has also become more nationalist, authoritarian, and repressive. The government has engaged in what many critics, including the United States, have called <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2022/9/14/23351153/china-uyghur-muslim-genocide-xinjiang-united-nations">genocide</a> toward the Uyghurs and other Muslim ethnic minority groups in Western China and crushed any semblance of autonomy <a href="https://www.vox.com/2022/7/2/23192550/xi-hong-kong-john-lee-china">in Hong Kong</a>. Abroad, China has become more assertive of territorial claims in the <a href="https://www.cfr.org/global-conflict-tracker/conflict/tensions-east-china-sea">East</a> and <a href="https://www.cfr.org/global-conflict-tracker/conflict/territorial-disputes-south-china-sea">South China Seas</a>, engaged in <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/india-china-clash-sikkim/2021/01/25/7d82883c-5edb-11eb-a177-7765f29a9524_story.html">border skirmishes with India</a>, and most notably, ratcheted up military action and <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/8/10/china-reaffirms-threat-of-military-force-to-take-taiwan">threatening to use force</a> to bring Taiwan under its control.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="f15LOT">
Given that all of the major policy and personnel decisions have already been made behind the scenes, the best way to think about the Party Congress is as a weather forecast for China and the world. Internally, China is dealing with significant <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-62830775">economic issues</a>, partly as a consequence of its strict zero-Covid policies and a <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/e9e8c879-5536-4fbc-8ec2-f2a274b823b4">real estate crisis</a>. Its also facing more <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2022/9/29/23375616/china-climate-adaptation-heat-wave-future">climate catastrophes</a> and a looming demographic collapse as <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2022/07/china-population-shrink-60-years-world/">its population appears to have begun to decline</a>. Externally, China finds itself with frostier relations with the US and European Union — its largest trading partners — while the Global Norths <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2022/09/28/how-global-public-opinion-of-china-has-shifted-in-the-xi-era/">public opinion of China has soured</a> because of its pandemic response.

This years Party Congress will begin to make clear whether and how Xi and the Chinese government will reframe their approach to a world that has hugely changed since the last Party Congress five years ago. Xi “still recognizes that China must remain an international player in many, many different ways in order to succeed,” Swaine said. “He cannot isolate China and turn it into a sort of self-contained entity.”

Under normal circumstances, at least in recent decades, Xi Jinping would be stepping down, but of course, he will not. What this means is that Xi Jinping is truly a very powerful, dominant figure within the Chinese Communist Party. He will likely continue to exercise that dominance over the next five years, at least. He may <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks/China-up-close/Xi-Jinping-sends-shock-waves-with-his-2035-manifesto">even stay in power until 2035</a>, which is one big milestone or benchmark that the party has put in its development plans. What that really does suggest is that hes continuing to make and remake the party in some ways in his own image, but also put his supporters in positions of power. Thats really the critical other issue: to what extent will people seen as very loyal and beholden to him be put even more so in positions of power through the Party Congress?
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="3iXvUn">
This is not just a question of Xi Jinping having removed any possible opponents to himself and put in his own supporters. Large numbers of the party leadership support the general thrust of Xi Jinpings direction and his governance. His whole role has been to strengthen party leadership and party control within China to correct the corruption, the backsliding, and the confusion that emerged over recent decades as to what the partys role is in society, the economy, in politics, and foreign policy. His whole tenure has really been focused on strengthening the party and leading China into the 21st century.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="jOCb9C">
What people look for in terms of changes are individuals who are perhaps not so closely tied to Xi Jinping, who are more in the realm of technocrats or reformers, who are interested in [the question of]: “How do we really try to maintain market incentives and Chinas role in the global trading system while were sort of increasing party control?”

I wouldnt go so far as to say that everybody moves in lockstep, and nobodys unhappy and theres no grumbling going on in the ranks or among some fairly high leaders. China is encountering increasing numbers of both domestic and foreign problems, in part because of Xi Jinpings policies. Over time, if these continue and they worsen — say, zero-Covid, which I think the Party Congress will continue to back, continues to grate a lot of people in the country, and it expands in nature — these things could rebound against Xi Jinping over time. But I would not say that at this point in time, that there is a movement afoot, lets say, to sort of challenge Xi Jinping on policy issues.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="62QHTb">
There are several issues. The first one is that Xi Jinping is connected to very specific types of policies and visions for Chinas future. Like <a href="https://www.cfr.org/excerpt-third-revolution">the grand rejuvenation of China</a>, which he hopes to achieve by 2049, the elimination of inequality so that you have a more just society, corruption, etc. All of those things are going to be continued under Xi Jinping. <p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="xXrWyl">
It also involves a very strong role for the party. Theres greater effort to try to control the activities of interest groups in China and the activities of institutions. Youll see continuity with whats been established under Xi Jinping already, which is that China is fully committed to engaging the world, and pursuing “<a href="https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/mfa_eng/zxxx_662805/202209/t20220924_10771028.html">win-win</a>” outcomes. It wants to invest more in the world and be a part of the world community. At the same time, it wants to see changes in some of the norms and standards that have governed in certain areas in the direction of greater justice as defined by the Chinese, which means justice for developing societies and developing countries, and justice for Chinas own influence — in other words, giving China greater say at the seat of the table.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="V8KkCD">
Alongside that, youll have the desire to preserve and protect China against what is seen now as efforts by the United States to contain the development of the Peoples Republic of China. The Communist Party will define US policy as not just anti-party but anti-China.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="gZjRi4">
So the Chinese government under Xi Jinping will continue to try to guard against greater levels of US pressure because they see the US struggling with its own problems internally, and in other ways, Chinas leadership sees the United States as potentially more dangerous. Which is exactly the same kind of argument that people [in the US] project against Chinas leadership. I think both of those arguments are overblown, but they do get some traction within the leaderships of both of these governments. And so the competition between the US and China will deepen and the danger of continuing down this route is that it really does pose some serious dangers, particularly over Taiwan.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="vFSSC3">
The media often tends to take a very sort of one-dimensional and simplistic look at the way the party exists and how it operates in China. Yes, the Party Congress is kind of a showcase more than it is a deliberative body. But the party in China is nearly 100 million people. This is not a small elite group of power-hungry people at the top of the system who are keeping everybody down; it is deeply infused in Chinese society in many ways that are in some respects seen by ordinary Chinese as good and beneficial. This is no doubt a one-party dictatorship — theres no question about it. They do not tolerate dissent, either in words or inactions.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tlcKPA">
However, the policies of the party, that representation at local levels, how they interact with this Chinese society at the root level, is much more complex than that simple narrative of a dictatorial one-party, top-down system. The media needs to appreciate that complexity more and understand that the party is, in many ways, serving the interests of Chinese society, while at the same time in some ways threatening the future of China because of this heavy-handedness that is exercised under Xi Jinping.

In a debate punctuated as much by theatrics as real issues, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) faced off against first-time senate candidate and former professional football player Herschel Walker, highlighting the crucial role Georgia plays in the struggle over control in the Senate — which seems to be slipping out of Democrats grasp.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tTscYO">
For months leading up to the debate, it was unclear whether Walker, a frequently nonsensical public speaker prone to promoting lies related to the 2020 election, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-sports-nfl-college-football-coronavirus-pandemic-5e2875eec11e93f9a3bf1fc859137ff8">his business ventures</a>, and on Friday night, his connections with law enforcement agencies would even debate Warnock, the Savannah-born pastor of Atlantas historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, as <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/10/14/walker-warnock-georgia-abortion-00061971">Politicos Natalie Allison reported</a>.

However, Walker outperformed low expectations on the debate stage in Savannah, mainly opting to repeatedly tie Warnock to President Joe Biden by emphasizing Warnocks voting record, and by attempting to call into question Warnocks spiritual bona fides. Warnock focused on Walkers repeated lies, about everything from whether he had asked a former girlfriend to have an abortion to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/nicholasreimann/2022/10/15/herschel-walker-prop-badge-candidate-has-long-record-of-claiming-to-be-a-cop-hes-not/?sh=25cbb4e211fa">Walkers claims that he was an FBI agent and worked for the Cobb County Police Department</a>, despite there being no record of him working there.

Georgias senate race is one of three close midterm elections that could deliver a stronger Democratic majority — or put the chamber in Republican control. Though typically the midterm elections swing Congress to the opposite party of the current president, thats not necessarily a given in this contest; factors including the Supreme Courts decision to overturn <em>Roe v. Wade,</em> the impact of former President Donald Trumps influence in the Republican party, and the Republican candidates themselves have made the contests in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Nevada in particular difficult to predict.

Walker, the one-time high school all-American and current Trump ally, has struggled with terrible press coverage in recent weeks, primarily over allegations that he requested a former girlfriend have an abortion in 2009, and paid for the procedure when she agreed. Walker has denied the incident, originally reported <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/pro-life-herschel-walker-paid-for-girlfriends-abortion-georgia-senate">by the Daily Beast</a>, in Fridays debate; since the original allegations came out, the same<strong> </strong>woman has also said that Walker asked her to have a second abortion in 2011. When she refused, they ended their relationship, and she told the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/10/07/us/elections-midterms">New York Times</a> earlier this month that Walker has barely been involved in their childs life other than paying child support and sending occasional gifts. One of his other children, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/christianwalk1r/?hl=en">Christian Walker</a>, who is a conservative internet celebrity, <a href="https://twitter.com/christianwalk1r/status/1577104266543497216">also claimed that Walker threatened his son and ex-wife with violence and engaged in extramarital affairs</a>.

Thats in contrast with Walkers support of what his website calls “<a href="https://www.teamherschel.com/issues/stand-for-conservative-family-values/">conservative family values</a>” and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/14/us/politics/georgia-debate-badge-key-moments.html">his previous position</a> that abortion should be banned without exception. During the debate, he seemed to soften his previous stance to be more in line with what the Georgia legislature has passed — <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/20/us/georgia-abortion-ban.html">a six-week abortion ban</a> with exceptions for the life of the pregnant person, or in cases of rape or incest.

Oz, who is competing against current Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D) for one of Pennsylvanias senate seats, likely cant win that race, according to Sabatos Crystal Ball, but the Nevada seat is considered a toss-up, Coleman said. “Nevada tends to be a very straight-ticket race, its a race where getting out your base is important.” But this contest is the first after the death of former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D), and his signature get-out-the-vote operation may not be enough to keep Sen. Catherine Cortez Mastos seat <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/elections/2022/10/12/nevada-midterms-democrats-republicans/">in the face of high inflation and Republican gains with Latinx voters in the state</a>.

Whether Walkers many failings as a candidate, as well as his latest scandals, can appreciably move the needle in Warnocks direction remains to be seen, although recent polling indicates Warnock has a slight lead over Walker <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/14/briefing/herschel-walkers-senate-midterms.html">due at least in part to Walkers recent media attention</a>. </h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="T5zGbS">
Georgia, which has a Republican governor and went for Trump in 2016, went Democratic in the 2020 election; a Biden victory, as well as the elections of Warnock and Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) to replace Republicans Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, turned the state solidly purple. Although Gov. Brian Kemp is likely to defeat challenger Stacy Abrams, its quite possible that Georgia voters will again split their ballots as they did in 2020, Coleman told Vox.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="HvDlYL">
“Something you have to keep in mind, I think is in the Atlanta suburbs, counties like Cobb, Gwinnett, there are Democratic voters there who used to be Republicans,” Coleman said. “I think what might help Warnock there is, unlike Abrams, hes running against a Trump-backed opponent.” Kemp, meanwhile, isnt as closely tied with the Trump brand, which works to his advantage among this group, Coleman said. “Im really interested to see, the voters who are excited about Kemp, who are deciding whether theyre going to have to hold their nose and vote for Herschel Walker.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="wqt2PJ">
Walkers scandals “probably will make it harder for him to win outright,” Coleman told Vox, but Georgias election laws require state candidates to win a majority of the vote, or face a runoff as both Warnock and Ossoff did in 2020. If Warnock fails to capture that 50 percent during the November contest, Walker could conceivably gain ground before a runoff.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="PQ68Yf">
<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/brucelee/2022/10/15/herschel-walker-asked-about-insulin-costs-says-you-got-to-eat-right/?sh=18e45e51dff5">Walkers appeal as a candidate is extremely limited</a>, but, Coleman said, “He has some goodwill from his time as a football star, and that might play with older Georgians.” Its also possible that hell pick up support among Black voters in rural Georgia, a group that backed Warnock in 2020. Walkers attempt to “chip away at Warnocks image as a preacher” was important because these areas, stretching from Columbus to Macon and up to Augusta, went stronger for Warnock than they did for Ossoff or Biden, and collecting some of those votes could be important.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="HvGZ5s">
Indeed, some Black voters — mostly men, as Leah Wright Rigueur, an associate research professor at Johns Hopkins University <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2020/11/why-black-men-and-women-vote-so-differently/617134/">explained in a piece for the Atlantic in 2020</a> — have drifted to the GOP in recent years. Thats due, according to Wright Rigueurs research, to disillusionment with a Democratic party that has failed to achieve anything resembling equality for Black people, despite its promises and reliance on the Black community to win elections. Republicans, at least, encourage an appealing, if illusory, vision of achievable hypercapitalist wealth and independence.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="TE80aN">
Among the factors that could shift the tide in Georgias race — new Walker scandals, a changing voter demographic — Fridays debate isnt likely to be one of them, Coleman said. “Not a lot of people watch these — I think in this case, they were planning it at the same time as a Braves game.”
