<li><strong>S-variant SARS-CoV-2 is associated with significantly higher viral loads in samples tested by ThermoFisher TaqPath RT-PCR</strong> -

Birmingham University Turnkey laboratory is part of the Lighthouse network responsible for testing clinical samples under the UK government Test &amp; Trace scheme. Samples are analysed for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in respiratory samples using the Thermofisher TaqPath RT-PCR test, which is designed to co-amplify sections of three SARS-CoV-2 viral genes. Since more recent information became available regarding the presence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (S-VoC), which can show a suboptimal profile in RT-PCR tests such as the ThermoFisher TaqPath used at the majority of Lighthouse laboratories, we analysed recently published data for trends and significance of the S-gene dropout variant. Results showed that: (i) the population of S-gene dropout samples had significantly lower median Ct values of ORF and N-gene targets compared to samples where S-gene was detected (ii) on a population basis, S-gene dropout samples clustered around very low Ct values for ORF and N targets (iii) linked Ct values for individual samples showed that a low Ct for ORF and N were clearly associated with an S-dropout characteristic (iv) when conservatively inferring relative viral load from Ct values, approximately 35% of S-dropout samples had high viral loads between 10 and 10,000-fold greater than 1 x 106, compared to 10% of S-positive samples. This analysis suggests that patients whose samples exhibit the S-dropout profile in the TaqPath test are more likely to have high viral loads at the time of sampling. The relevance of this to epidemiological reports of fast spread of the SARS-CoV-2 in regions of the UK is discussed.

<li><strong>Quantifying the online news media coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic.</strong> -

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
<b>Background</b>. Non-pharmaceutical interventions such as lockdowns, mask wearing and social distancing have been the primary measures to effectively combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Such measures are highly effective when there is strong population wide adherence which needs to be facilitated by information on the current risks posed by the pandemic alongside a clear exposition of the rules and guidelines in place. Here we address the issue of communication on the pandemic by offering data and analysis of online news media coverage of COVID-19. <b>Methods</b>. We collected 26 million news articles from the front pages of 172 major online news sources in 11 countries (available at http://sciride.org). Using topic detection we identified COVID-19-related content to quantify the proportion of total coverage pandemic received in 2020. Sentiment analysis tool Vader was employed to stratify the emotional polarity of COVID-19 reporting. Further topic detection and sentiment analysis was performed on COVID-19 articles to reveal the leading themes in pandemic reporting and their respective emotional polarizations. <b>Findings</b>. We find that COVID-19 coverage accounted for approximately 25% of all front-page online news articles between January and October 2020. Sentiment analysis of English-speaking sources reveals that the overall COVID-19 coverage cannot be simply classified as negative due to the disease subject matter, suggesting a wide heterogeneous reporting of the pandemic. Within this heterogenous coverage, 16% of COVID-19 news articles (or 4% of all English-speaking articles) can be classified as highly negatively polarized, citing issues such as death, fear or crisis. <b>Interpretation</b>. The goal of pandemic public health communication is to increase understanding of distancing rules and maximize the impact of any governmental policy. Our results suggest an information overload in COVID-19 reporting that could risk obscuring effective policy communication. We hope that our data and analysis will inform health communication strategy to minimize the risks of COVID-19 while vaccination regimes are being introduced.

<li><strong>Salivary SARS-CoV-2 antigen rapid detection: a prospective cohort study</strong> -

Background: SARS-CoV-2 quick testing and reporting are now considered relevant for the containment of new pandemic waves. Antigen testing in self-collected saliva might be useful. We compared the diagnostic performance of salivary and naso-pharyngeal swab (NPS) SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection by a rapid chemiluminescent assay (CLEIA) and two different point-of-care (POC) immunochromatographic assays, with that of molecular testing. Methods. 234 patients were prospectively enrolled. Paired self-collected saliva (Salivette) and NPS were obtained to perform rRT-PCR, chemiluminescent (Lumipulse G) and POC (NPS: Fujirebio and Abbott; saliva: Fujirebio) for SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection. Results. The overall agreement between NPS and saliva rRT-PCR was 78.7%, reaching 91.7% at the first week from symptoms onset. SARS-CoV-2 CLEIA antigen was highly accurate in distinguishing between positive and negative NPS (ROC-AUC=0.939, 95%CI:0.903-0.977), with 81.6% sensitivity and 93.8% specificity. This assay on saliva had an overall good accuracy (ROC- AUC=0.805, 95%CI:0.740-0.870), reaching the optimal value within 7 days from symptom onset (Sensitivity: 72%; Specificity: 97%). POC antigen in saliva had a very limited sensitivity (13%), performing better in NPS (Sensitivity: 48% and 66%; Specificity: 100% and 99% for Espline and Abbott respectively), depending on viral loads. Conclusions: Self-collected saliva is a valid alternative to NPS for SARS-CoV-2 detection not only by molecular, but also by CLEIA antigen testing, for which the highest diagnostic accuracy was achieved in the first week from symptom onset. Saliva is not suitable for POC, although the accuracy of these tests appears satisfactory for NPS with high viral load.

<li><strong>Spatial Allocation of Scarce Vaccine and Antivirals for COVID-19</strong> -

Although the COVID-19 disease burden is heterogeneous across space, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends an equitable spatial allocation of pharmaceutical interventions based, for example, on population size, in the interest of speed and workability. Utilizing economic-epidemiological modeling, we benchmark the performance of <i>ad hoc</i> allocation rules of scarce vaccines and drugs by comparing them to the rules for a vaccine and for a drug treatment that minimize the economic damages and expenditures over time, including a penalty cost representing the social costs of deviating from an <i>ad hoc</i> allocation. Under different levels of vaccine and drug scarcity, we consider scenarios where length of immunity and compliance to travel restrictions vary, and consider the robustness of the rules when assumptions regarding these factors are incorrect. Because drugs and vaccines attack different points in the disease pathology, the benefits from deviating from the <i>ad hoc</i> rule differ. For drug treatment, optimal policies often allocate all available treatments to one jurisdiction for a period of time, while <i>ad hoc</i> rules act to spread out treatments across jurisdictions. For vaccines, the benefits from deviating are especially high when immunity is permanent, when there is compliance to travel restrictions, and when the supply of vaccine is low. Interestingly, a lack of compliance to travel restrictions pushes the optimal allocations of vaccine towards the <i>ad hoc</i> and improves the relative robustness of the <i>ad hoc</i> rules, as the mixing of the populations reduces the spatial heterogeneity in disease burden.

Accurate estimates of infection prevalence and seroprevalence are essential for evaluating and informing public health responses needed to address the ongoing spread of COVID-19 in the United States. A data-driven Bayesian single parameter semi-empirical model was developed and used to evaluate state-level prevalence and seroprevalence of COVID-19 using daily reported cases and test positivity ratios. COVID-19 prevalence is well-approximated by the geometric mean of the positivity rate and the reported case rate. As of December 8, 2020, we estimate nation-wide a prevalence of 1.4% [Credible Interval (CrI): 0.8%-1.9%] and a seroprevalence of 11.1% [CrI: 10.1%-12.2%], with state-level prevalence ranging from 0.3% [CrI: 0.2%-0.4%] in Maine to 3.0% [CrI: 1.1%-5.7%] in Pennsylvania, and seroprevalence from 1.4% [CrI: 1.0%-2.0%] in Maine to 22% [CrI: 18%-27%] in New York. The use of this simple and easy-to-communicate model will improve the ability to make public health decisions that effectively respond to the ongoing pandemic.

<li><strong>Extensive High-Order Complexes within SARS-CoV-2 Proteome Revealed by Compartmentalization-Aided Interaction Screening</strong> -

Bearing the largest single-stranded RNA genome in nature, SARS-CoV-2 utilizes sophisticated replication/transcription complexes (RTCs), mainly composed of a network of nonstructural proteins and nucleocapsid protein, to establish efficient infection. Here, we developed an innovative interaction screening strategy based on phase separation in cellulo, namely compartmentalization of protein-protein interactions in cells (CoPIC). Utilizing CoPIC screening, we mapped the interaction network among RTC-related viral proteins. We identified a total of 47 binary interactions among 14 proteins governing replication, discontinuous transcription, and translation of coronaviruses. Further exploration via CoPIC led to the discovery of extensive ternary complexes composed of these components, which infer potential higher-order complexes. Taken together, our results present an efficient, and robust interaction screening strategy, and indicate the existence of a complex interaction network among RTC-related factors, thus opening up new opportunities to understand SARS-CoV-2 biology and develop therapeutic interventions for COVID-19.

<li><strong>Establishment of a well-characterized SARS-CoV-2 lentiviral pseudovirus neutralization assay using 293T cells with stable expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2</strong> -

Pseudoviruses are useful surrogates for highly pathogenic viruses because of their safety, genetic stability, and scalability for screening assays. Many different pseudovirus platforms exist, each with different advantages and limitations. Here we report our efforts to optimize and characterize an HIV-based lentiviral pseudovirus assay for screening neutralizing antibodies for SARS-CoV-2 using a stable 293T cell line expressing human angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2). We assessed different target cells, established conditions that generate readouts over at least a two-log range, and confirmed consistent neutralization titers over a range of pseudovirus input. Using reference sera and plasma panels, we evaluated assay precision and showed that our neutralization titers correlate well with results reported in other assays. Overall, our lentiviral assay is relatively simple, scalable, and suitable for a variety of SARS-CoV-2 entry and neutralization screening assays.

<li><strong>Single point mutations can potentially enhance infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 revealed by in silico affinity maturation and SPR assay</strong> -

The RBD (receptor binding domain) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus S (spike) protein mediates the viral cell attachment and serves as a promising target for therapeutics development. Mutations on the S-RBD may alter its affinity to cell receptor and affect the potency of vaccines and antibodies. Here we used an in-silico approach to predict how mutations on RBD affect its binding affinity to hACE2 (human angiotensin-converting enzyme2). The effect of all single point mutations on the interface was predicted. SPR assay result shows that 6 out of 9 selected mutations can strengthen binding affinity. Our prediction has reasonable agreement with the previous deep mutational scan results and recently reported mutants. Our work demonstrated in silico method as a powerful tool to forecast more powerful virus mutants, which will significantly benefit for the development of broadly neutralizing vaccine and antibody.

<li><strong>Unequal but Balanced: Highly educated mothers perceptions of work-life balance during the COVID-19 lockdown in Finland and the Netherlands</strong> -

One year after passage of the European work-life balance directive, and thus recognition of the need for policy support, measures to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic are shaping parents work-life balance in significant ways. Academically, we are challenged to explore whether existing theoretical frameworks hold in this new environment with combined old and new policy frameworks. We are also challenged to understand the nuanced ways in which the first lockdown affects the combination of paid work and care. We address both of these issues, providing a cross-sectional comparative analysis of highly educated mothers perceptions of work-life balance during the COVID-19 pandemic in Finland and the Netherlands. Our findings show that highly educated Finnish mothers have more difficulty combining work and care during the first lockdown than Dutch mothers. The absence of state-provided care during the lockdown creates greater difficulty for full-time working Finnish mothers in a dual-earner/state-carer system than an absence of such care in the Dutch one-and-a-half earner system, where most mothers work part-time. Further analyses suggest variation in part-time and (nearly) full-time hours mitigates the work-life balance experiences of highly educated Dutch mothers. We discuss these findings in light of current theoretical frameworks and highlight avenues for future research.

<li><strong>Pulmonary stromal expansion and intra-alveolar coagulation are primary causes of Covid-19 death</strong> -

Most Covid-19 victims are old and die from unrelated causes. Here we present twelve complete autopsies, including two rapid autopsies of young patients where the cause of death was Covid-19 ARDS. The main virus induced pathology was in the lung parenchyma and not in the airways. Most coagulation events occurred in the intra-alveolar and not in the intra-vascular space and the few thrombi were mainly composed of aggregated thrombocytes. The dominant inflammatory response was the massive accumulation of CD163+ macrophages and the disappearance of T killer, NK and B-cells. The virus was replicating in the pneumocytes and macrophages but not in bronchial epithelium, endothel, pericytes or stromal cells. The lung consolidations were produced by a massive regenerative response, stromal and epithelial proliferation and neovascularization. We suggest that thrombocyte aggregation inhibition, angiogenesis inhibition and general proliferation inhibition may have a roll in the treatment of advanced Covid-19 ARDS.

The N501Y mutation in Covid-19 arise many question but a small amount of data are currently available. An urgent understanding of N501Y mechanism of action at molecular level is highly required. Here, we present the preliminary results of our Free energy perturbation (FEP) and Molecular dynamics (MD) calculations for the interaction of the spike S1 receptor binding domain (RBD) with both the ACE2 receptor and an antibody, STE90-C11, derived from COVID-19 patients. The results shown that the S1 RBD-ACE2 interaction was increased whereas those with the STE90-C11 antibody significantly decreased (over about 160 times). This may explain the observed in UK more spread of the virus but also emerge an important question about the possible human immune response and already available vaccines. Indeed, the latter may still act well but our data indicate some possible reduction of their effect. Further studies of N501Y mutation are need.

<li><strong>Genomic diversity of SARS-CoV-2 can be accelerated by a mutation in the nsp14 gene</strong> -

Nucleotide substitution rate of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is relatively low compared to the other RNA viruses because coronaviruses including SARS-CoV-2 encode non-structural protein 14 (nsp14) that is an error-correcting exonuclease protein. In this study, to understand genome evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in the current pandemic, we examined mutations of SARS-CoV-2 nsp14 which could inhibit its error-correcting function. First, to obtain functionally important sites of nsp14, we examined 62 representative coronaviruses belonging to alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and unclassified coronaviruses. As a result, 99 out of 527 amino acid sites of nsp14 were evolutionarily conserved. We then examined nsp14 sequences obtained from 28,082 SARS-CoV-2 genomes and identified 6 amino acid changes in nsp14 mutants that were not detected in the 62 representative coronaviruses. We examined genome substitution rates of these mutants and found that an nsp14 mutant with a proline to leucine change at position 203 (P203L) showed a higher substitution rate (35.9 substitutions/year) than SARS-CoV-2 possessing wild-type nsp14 (19.8 substitutions/year). We confirmed that the substitution rate of the P203L is significantly higher than those of other variants containing mutations in structural proteins. Although the number of SARS-CoV-2 variants containing P203L mutation of nsp14 is limited (26), these mutants appeared at least 10 times independently in the current pandemic. These results indicated that the molecular function of nsp14 is important for survival of various coronaviruses including SARS-CoV-2 and that some mutations such as P203L of nsp14 inhibiting its error-correcting function are removed rapidly due to their deleterious effects.

<li><strong>TCR meta-clonotypes for biomarker discovery with tcrdist3: quantification of public, HLA-restricted TCR biomarkers of SARS-CoV-2 infection</strong> -

As the mechanistic basis of adaptive cellular antigen recognition, T cell receptors (TCRs) encode clinically valuable information that reflects prior antigen exposure and potential future response. However, despite advances in deep repertoire sequencing, enormous TCR diversity complicates the use of TCR clonotypes as clinical biomarkers. We propose a new framework that leverages antigen-enriched repertoires to form meta-clonotypes -- groups of biochemically similar TCRs -- that can be used to robustly quantify functionally similar TCRs in bulk repertoires. We apply the framework to TCR data from COVID-19 patients, generating 1,915 public TCR meta-clonotypes from the 18 SARS-CoV-2 antigen-enriched repertoires with the strongest evidence of HLA-restriction. Applied to independent cohorts, meta-clonotypes targeting these specific epitopes were more frequently detected in bulk repertoires compared to exact amino acid matches, and 44% (845/1915) were significantly enriched among COVID-19 patients that expressed the putative restricting HLA allele, demonstrating the potential utility of meta-clonotypes as antigen-specific features for biomarker development. To enable further applications, we developed an open-source software package, tcrdist3, that implements this framework and facilitates workflows for distance-based TCR repertoire analysis.

<li><strong>Influence of HLA class II polymorphism on predicted cellular immunity against SARS-CoV-2 at the population and individual level</strong> -

Development of effective adaptive immune responses after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and after vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is predicated on recognition of viral peptides, presented in the context of HLA class II molecules, by CD4+ T-cells. We capitalised on extensive high resolution HLA data deposited in the National Marrow Donor Program registry to obtain detailed information on human HLA haplotype frequencies of twenty five human populations and used a bioinformatics approach to investigate the role of HLA polymorphism on SARS-CoV-2 immunogenicity at the population and at the individual level. Within populations, we identify wide inter-individual variability in predicted CD4+ T-cell reactivity against structural, non-structural and accessory SARS-CoV-2 proteins, according to expressed HLA genotype. However, we find similar potential for anti-SARS-CoV-2 cellular immunity at the population level, across all ethnic groups examined, suggesting that HLA polymorphism is unlikely to account for observed disparities in clinical outcomes after COVID-19 among different race and ethnic groups. We predict robust immune reactivity against SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein, the basis for the majority of current vaccination efforts, both at the population and individual level, despite significant variation in Spike-derived peptide presentation by individual HLA genotypes. Finally, we provide comprehensive maps of SARS-CoV-2 proteome immunogenicity accounting for population coverage in major ethnic groups. Our findings provide important insight on the potential role of HLA polymorphism on development of protective immunity after SARS-CoV-2 infection and after vaccination and a firm basis for further experimental studies in this field.

<li><strong>Differential Dynamic Behavior of Prefusion Spike Proteins of SARS Coronaviruses 1 and 2</strong> -

Within the last two decades, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronaviruses 1 and 2 (SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2) have caused two major outbreaks. For reasons yet to be fully understood the COVID-19 outbreak caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been significantly more widespread than the 2003 SARS epidemic caused by SARS-CoV-1, despite striking similarities between the two viruses. One of the most variable genes differentiating SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 is the S gene that encodes the spike glycoprotein. This protein mediates a crucial step in the infection, i.e., host cell recognition and viral entry, which starts with binding to the host cell angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) protein for both viruses. Recent structural and functional studies have shed light on the differential binding behavior of the SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins. In particular, cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) studies show that ACE2 binding is preceded by a large-scale conformational change in the spike protein to expose the receptor binding domain (RBD) to its binding partner. Unfortunately, these studies do not provide detailed information on the dynamics of this activation process. Here, we have used an extensive set of unbiased and biased microsecond-timescale all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 spike protein ectodomains in explicit solvent to determine the differential behavior of spike protein activation in the two viruses. Our results based on nearly 50 microseconds of equilibrium and nonequilibrium MD simulations indicate that the active form of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein is considerably more stable than the active SARS-CoV-1 spike protein. Unlike the active SARS-CoV-2 spike, the active SARS-CoV-1 spike spontaneously undergoes a large-scale conformational transition to a pseudo-inactive state, which occurs in part due to interactions between the N-terminal domain (NTD) and RBD that are absent in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Steered MD (SMD) simulations indicate that the energy barriers between active and inactive states are comparatively lower for the SARS-CoV-1 spike protein. Based on these results, we hypothesize that the greater propensity of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to remain in the active conformation contributes to the higher transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 in comparison to SARS-CoV-1. These results strongly suggest that the differential binding behavior of the active SARS-CoV-1 and 2 spike proteins is not merely due to differences in their RBDs as other domains of the spike protein such as the NTD could play a crucial role in the effective binding process, which involves the pre-binding activation. Therefore, our hypothesis predicts that mutations in regions such as the NTD, which is not directly involved in binding, may lead to a change in the effective binding behavior of the coronavirus.

Bridgerton wants to explore consent while it ignores its own glaring consent issue.

<em>Bridgerton</em>, Shonda Rimess first collaboration with Netflix, may be a sumptuous, scandal-laced frolic through Regency London. But like many Shondaland series, it has plenty of dark and disturbing moments, and the shows first season leaves us with more questions than answers. Chief among them: Does the creative team realize how badly they handled the rape scene?
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="WOZQwn">
Romance novelist Julia Quinn wrote the novel series on which <em>Bridgerton</em> is based, starting with <em>The Duke and I</em> in 2000. The first season, written by Shondaland veteran <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2547449/">Chris Van Dusen</a> (<em>Scandal, Greys Anatomy</em>), follows <em>The Duke and I</em> fairly closely — including one scene thats central to the plot but that has been called out repeatedly by romance readers over the years <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/BridgertonNetflix/comments/jg36i8/how_will_this_controversial_part_of_the_plot_be/">as a rape</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="UcvmU6">
In the two decades since the books release, <a href="https://www.vox.com/metoo">much of society</a> has become more aware of what is and isnt consensual sex, and the show deliberately made changes to the scene to make it less explicitly nonconsensual. That indicates to me that Van Dusen and his fellow creatives knew the problems with the scene they were adapting. But the version of this scene that ended up in the show is still nonconsensual, despite the tweaks. And although its framed as a serious violation of trust between consenting parties, it passes without any explicit acknowledgment on the shows part that what just occurred was a deeply disturbing violation of consent.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="pYxx9K">
<em>Bridgerton </em>is thematically concerned with the dynamics of informed consent, which makes it even stranger that this scene was left unaddressed; indeed, if there are any lasting repercussions for the victim of the assault or their dynamic with their rapist, we dont actually see them.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="h8lwuF">
Because it happens pretty quickly and the narrative moves on immediately from the specifics of the sexual encounter itself, Im not sure everyone will judge this scene in the same way I do. But thats why we should discuss it.

Our hero has a secret that sets the stage for everything

<em>Bridgerton </em>is a historical romance set during Londons Regency era, a period of whirling 19th-century ballrooms and high-society intrigues. Our story revolves around gorgeous debutante Daphne Bridgerton (<a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3697443/">Phoebe Dynevor</a>) and the fake courtship she arranges during her debut on Londons “marriage mart,” the upper-class ritual of social functions that help eligible ladies and gentlemen make a match.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="IFyokc">
Despite coming from a powerful family and making a splash at her debut, Daphne is having trouble attracting suitors — so she bets (correctly) that faking a courtship with a very eligible duke will reignite the attention of other gentlemen. Her choice of bachelor: Simon, the hunky Duke of Hastings (<a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2074546/?ref_=tt_cl_t20">R</a><a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2074546/">egé-Jean Page</a>), a Black man whose family was recently elevated to the peerage. Simon is trying to avoid matrimonial plots because hes sworn off marriage, due to his solemn vow never to father children in order to let his entire family line, title and all, die with him. Its a promise he made in order to spite his abusive late father, who emotionally abused Simon all his life and cared more about his dukedom than anything else.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="DraNdG">
The relationship ruse is mutually beneficial for Daphne and Simon, as it allows him to avoid seriously participating in the marriage mart. But of course, in between bickering and pretending to be in love, the two fake lovebirds soon develop a very real romance. Through an unlucky turn of events involving epic misunderstandings, secret love trysts, and a duel — yknow, the usual — the storyline scoots Daphne and Simon into a hastily arranged marriage. This leads to lots and lots of sex scenes because theyre a hot couple who are hot for each other. But their newfound love also creates a whole new set of problems arising from Simons vow never to sire a family — a vow Daphne knows nothing about.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="nwmUh1">
This subplot contributes to <em>Bridgerton</em>s most interesting thematic idea, if one it ultimately squanders: the relationship between scandal, secrets, and informed consent. The plot revolves around Simons choice not to tell Daphne that he has vowed not to have children. Instead, he only tells her that he “cant” have children, a clear difference from “wont.” This deception places her in a doubly vulnerable position: Daphnes in the dark about sex generally, as a woman whos had no sexual education, and since shes getting most of her tutelage from him directly, she has no way of knowing that hes hiding things from her about his sexual health and practices.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="BKxHjB">
Simons duplicity is, to some extent, unwitting — he doesnt intend to trap Daphne into marriage, but when events conspire to make marriage a necessity, he goes along with it, spinning a story that implies his inability to father children rather than tell her the truth. The narrative treats the difference between “cant” and “wont” as a crucial distinction, one that fills Daphne with horror and bitterness when she realizes it. Its an interesting turn because <em>Bridgerton</em> frames Simons deceptive phrasing as deliberate, along with his choice to continue lying to her by omission. This deception placed Daphne in the position of being unable to give informed consent, either to sex or to their entire relationship.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="uA6UhA">
The problem is that she only figures this out by raping him.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="UUhJfs">
Let me back up. <strong>(Warning: This is about to get pretty graphic and gross.)</strong>
</p>
<h3 id="FG11zJ">
The rape scene is brief and disturbing, but its not treated as a rape
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="RSauxb">
Daphne knows nothing about sex when she gets married. Her mother, too embarrassed to give her the specifics, sends her off to her marriage bed completely unprepared. Meanwhile, instead of telling his new wife whats up, Simon enjoys ravenous sex with Daphne<strong> </strong>but adopts the ol tried-and-true contraceptive method of pulling out every time. Eventually, Daphne figures out that theres some connection between Simon never completing the act and his insistence that he cant have children. Determined to figure out whether hes capable of it, she takes control during sex and positions herself on top of him so he cant pull out.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="wZj86M">
When he realizes his predicament right before orgasm, Simon looks alarmed and tries to stop — he cries out twice for Daphne to wait — but its too late. Once shes achieved her goal, she stops, and he processes what just happened in shock.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="0M9nPy">
The strangest thing about this moment is that Im not sure the shows writers consider<em> </em>this scene to be a rape scene. Daphne is immediately furious with Simon for lying to her, and the show then focuses on her betrayal and rage; she even has a semantic speech about the difference between “wont” and “cant.” Its clearly intended to spell out the intricacies of informed consent, but none of Simons duplicity justifies the way Daphne pulls his secret —<strong> </strong>and, to be clear, his semen — out of him. One bad moment of uninformed consent does not justify a moment of nonconsensual sex. And depriving Simon of his consent to both sex and fatherhood, even at the moment of climax, is still rape.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="66bnDU">
If the show had really explored the idea that Simons lie led to another similar violation of consent, that could have resulted in some really interesting narrative choices involving the two of them dealing with the fallout of both their betrayals and learning to communicate more clearly and carefully and sensitively.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="LZFYew">
But the show doesnt dwell on Daphnes choices, or on any long-term aftermath from that moment. The incident doesnt seem to impact Simons ability to trust Daphne in bed. Instead, the show turns toward Daphnes distrust of him for lying to her, dwelling on Simons need to win her forgiveness and give up his vow for the sake of their happiness.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tVcvVa">
I should note here that an <a href="https://bookbinge.com/2013/03/book-club-the-dukes-sperm-tdai/">even more nonconsensual version</a> of this scene also occurs in the novel. Quinn clearly wrote the scenario as a violation: “Daphne had aroused him in his sleep, taken advantage of him while he was still slightly intoxicated, and held him to her while he poured his seed into her.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="kQ1kkU">
Since the book was written, countless romance writers and readers have inserted <a href="https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/2005/09/talking_about_the_r_word/">productive</a> <a href="https://dearauthor.com/features/letters-of-opinion/sexual-force-and-reader-consent-in-romance/">commentaries</a> on <a href="http://www.jprstudies.org/2012/04/a-parody-of-love-the-narrative-uses-of-rape-in-popular-romance-by-angela-toscano/">the role</a> of rape (and tropes of dubious consent like “forced seduction”) in romance fiction. But according to Quinn herself in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=attmZbMFgO0&amp;t=22m10s">reported recent exchange</a> with romance vlogger <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/krystina885/about">BooksandKrys</a>, the consent issues in that scene flew under the radar at the time <em>The Duke and I</em> was published.<strong> </strong>“Yes, it was shocking, but no one seemed to feel that Daphne had done anything morally wrong,” she told BooksandKrys. “It was only as years passed and we gained new understanding of consent that people started to question her actions.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="1W2zl3">
Quinn offered some perspective on the dynamics of rape as early as 2003; speaking then to <em>Time</em>, she <a href="http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,411434,00.html">commented</a>, “I cant imagine a romance novel published today where the hero rapes the heroine and she falls in love with him ... I cant think of anything in my books that any feminist would find objectionable. ... And I consider myself a feminist.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="420qaI">
Yet by 2010, the scene was being <a href="https://dearauthor.com/features/letters-of-opinion/is-there-an-irredeemable-trait/#comment-232319">discussed</a> <a href="https://dearauthor.com/features/letters-of-opinion/is-there-an-irredeemable-trait/#comment-232335">among</a> readers as an example of sexual assault and lack of consent. By 2015, readers were <a href="https://allaboutromance.com/winsome-or-loathsome-daphne-bridgerton/">dissecting the scene</a> to point out its disturbing dynamics.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="fQAcgx">
That the shows creatives included this scene while making it less broadly, but still explicitly, nonconsensual, suggests they knew it needed fixing. But it seems like they failed to see how badly they ultimately handled it. Without signaling more effectively that Daphnes choice was just as violating for Simon as his secrecy was for Daphne, <em>Bridgerton</em> undermines its entire experiment in exploring the boundaries of consent.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="CC3vNT">
Through this moment, the show also undermines its central relationship, causing us to question the whole foundation of Daphne and Simons affection for each other. Because <em>Bridgerton</em> doesnt make an effort to depict Daphnes rape of Simon as a huge issue that must be addressed for them to heal their marriage, we dont really have much way of understanding whether their mutual trust is really fully repaired in the end. And were given no assurance that she wont violate his trust the next time she decides he might be lying to her.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="x1LwIe">
Its also frankly a giant gaslight; even as I write this, Im wondering if maybe Im wrong and that the scene <em>wasnt</em> rape — or if, perhaps, maybe this is the one time in history where somebody gets raped and its just not that big a deal, so its just kinda okay that the show glosses over it and moves on and Simon seems totally fine afterward.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="5DsmQh">
Obviously, these are horrible takeaways for a show to leave us with. The dynamics of consent are complex and often frustrating and confusing, but one thing is almost universally certain: Rape is a big deal, and it often hugely impacts and alters both the rape survivor and the rapist. For <em>Bridgerton</em> to ineffectively convey that Daphne raped Simon and then treat it like it was a minor side note to the much bigger issue of him lying to her makes it more difficult for audiences watching it to understand what consent looks like.
</p>

The fact that the rape victim here is both male and a person of color makes it even more egregious that the show is glossing over the incident. Men are often considered <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3067991/">silent victims</a> of sexual assault, and Black men in particular are often <a href="https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2015/06/the-deadly-history-of-theyre-raping-our-women-racists-have-long-defended-their-worst-crimes-in-the-name-of-defending-white-womens-honor.html">made scapegoats</a> for sexual violence, which further erases the status of Black male victims of sexual assault. In this context, the shows emphasis on Simon as the instigator of Daphnes choice basically paints him as being responsible for his own rape. This aligns with the broader cultural gaslighting of Black men and the shifting of blame away from the white men and women who enact violence upon them.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Nhbqvu">
Bridgerton has drawn its fair share of rave reviews as, among other things, “<a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/12/bridgerton-netflix-shonda-rhimes-review">delightful trash</a>.” As a huge, lifelong lover of the sorts of romance stories <em>Bridgerton</em> is adapting, what I hate most about this summation is that it implies that the ingredients of this story are a part of the inherent nature of the raunchy, racy historical romance. Not only is that a condescending attitude toward a genre that is frequently very literary and very serious, but its flatly wrong: Rape, especially unacknowledged rape, is by no means a feature of historical romance writing, nor was it going unaddressed and undebated back when Quinn wrote this story 20 years ago. Countless romance writers have done better than this. <em>Bridgerton</em> could and should have followed their example.

The annual feast is a holiday tradition that is likely to go on as usual this year, even in the midst of COVID-19 — albeit in the form of delivery or takeout.<strong> </strong>This pastime has evolved to a near-holy tradition, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGzO1ghRKp4">parodied</a> on <em>Saturday Night Live</em>, <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/249714266_New_York_Jews_and_Chinese_Food_The_Social_Construction_of_an_Ethnic_Pattern">analyzed</a> in academic papers, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tku61sKhPGo&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=29s">reaffirmed</a> by Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan.

Perhaps the foremost expert on the practice is Rabbi Joshua Eli Plaut, PhD, executive director of American Friends of Rabin Medical Center, rabbi of Metropolitan Synagogue in New York, and author of <a href="http://akosherchristmas.org"><em>A Kosher Christmas</em></a>, the premier (and only?) comprehensive study of what Jews do at Christmastime.

<strong>Both Jews and Christmas have existed for a while. When did Jews first ask, “What should we do on Christmas?” </strong><br/>It has been a question for as long as Christmas has existed, because Jews have always felt like outsiders. But how they felt specifically was really a function of their status in society. In Eastern Europe, for instance, Jews were not very assimilated. Christmas was a night of possible pogroms and violence, with so many celebrants, often drunk, going from house to house. Jews did not go to the synagogue to study. They stayed at home for physical safety reasons. If they did anything, they might play cards or chess.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="U5bKG6">
In Western Europe, after the French Revolution, Jews were more assimilated. There, they had more freedom to wonder, “Do I bring a Christmas tree into my home? Do I have a holiday meal? Do I give out gifts?” The early Zionist Theodor Herzl was a secular Jew, and he had a Christmas tree in his salon. After the Chief Rabbi of Vienna came to visit, he <a href="https://forward.com/news/israel/356767/when-theodor-herzl-lit-his-christmas-tree/">wrote something in his diary</a> like, ”I hope the Rabbi doesnt think less of me because of this. Then again, what do I care what he thinks?”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="xeTz1u">
<strong>Okay, so tell me when eating Chinese food on Christmas first comes into the picture. Is that a Jewish-American tradition? </strong><br/>Yes. It begins at the end of the 19th century, on the Lower East Side, where Jewish and Chinese immigrants lived in close proximity. The very first mention of American Jews eating in a Chinese restaurant dates to 1899, when the American Hebrew<em> </em>journal criticized Jews for eating at non-kosher restaurants. By 1936, a publication called the East Side Chamber News reported at least 18 Chinese tea gardens and chop suey eateries in heavily-populated Jewish neighborhoods. All of these were within close walking distance of Ratners, which was then the most famous Jewish dairy restaurant in Manhattan.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="lF15t7">
Jews would go out for Chinese food on Sundays, when they felt left out of church lunch. It was a gradual transition from the traditional diet of Eastern Europe, to eating American Chinese food, to eating other pan-Asian cuisines, like Indian food. I like to say that, within a hundred years of arriving in New York, the average Jew was more familiar with sushi than gefilte fish.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="5mDxHr">
In the last 35 years, Chinese restaurants on Christmas have really become this sort of temporary community where Jews in the United States can gather to be with friends and family. Its a secular way to celebrate Christmas, but its also a time to shut out Christmas and announce your Jewish identity in a safe environment.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ULFjt4">
<strong>Was there any reason, beyond proximity, that Jews wound up eating Chinese food, as opposed to some other immigrant cuisine? </strong><br/>In terms of kosher law, a Chinese restaurant is a lot safer than an Italian restaurant. In Italian food, there is mixing of meat and dairy. A Chinese restaurant doesnt mix meat and dairy, because Chinese cooking is virtually dairy-free.

In Chinese-American cooking, if there is any pork [which is not a kosher food], it is usually concealed inside something, like a wonton. A lot of Jews back then — and even now — kept strict kosher inside the home but were more flexible with foods they ate at restaurants. Sociologist Gaye Tuchman <a href="https://qcpages.qc.cuny.edu/~hlevine/SAFE-TREYF.pdf">wrote about this practice</a>. She described [the plausible deniability of non-kosher ingredients] as <em>safe treyf. </em>[<em>Treyf</em> is the Yiddish word for non-kosher.] A lot of Jews considered the pork in Chinese food to be <em>safe treyf</em>, because they couldnt see it. That made it easier to eat.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="QHj3Lu">
<strong>In your research for this book, did you come across anything about Chinese food and Christmas written from a Chinese-American perspective? </strong><br/>I actually found a citation from 1935, in the New York Times, about a restaurant owner named Eng Shee Chuck who brought chow mein to the Jewish Childrens Home on Christmas Day. If you were to interview Chinese restaurant owners, theyd tell you that Christmas is their biggest day of the year, outside of probably the Chinese New Year. If you want a more thorough understanding, though, you should probably go talk to some restaurant owners in Chinatown.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Z2OFTw">
<strong>Sometimes my family eats Chinese food on Christmas, but we always go to the movies. When did that become an established Jewish Christmas tradition? </strong><br/>When Jews began to settle on the Lower East Side of Manhattan between the 1880s and the 1920s, they were poor immigrants. They worked in sweatshops and lived in tenement housing. In their time off, they would go to the newly opened <a href="https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/first-nickelodeon-opens">nickelodeons</a>. For between one cent and five cents, they could see a very early form of a movie. By 1909, there were 42 nickelodeons adjacent to the Lower East Side and 10 uptown in Jewish Harlem. Christmas was just another day off, so these early movies attracted big crowds.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="BjauN9">
We know from the Yiddish press that Christmas became a popular day for the opening of new Yiddish theater productions. It was a day off from work, so what do you do? You can stay home, or you can go to the nickelodeons, or the Yiddish theater. Eventually, decades later, you could go have a meal in a Chinese restaurant.
</p>

<strong>What do you usually do on Christmas? </strong><br/>For many years I was researching this book. This year, Ill be with my family in a small town, where there are no real restaurants open. We will probably play a board game or watch Netflix.
</p>

<strong>What did you do on Christmas growing up? </strong><br/>I never went to Chinese restaurants. Wed go skating in front of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, and then wed have hot chocolate with marshmallows. I have great memories of Christmas. My mother would take me to sit on Santa Clauss lap. When I was writing this book, I asked her, “Why did you take me — the son of a rabbi! — to sit on Santa Clauss lap?” She said, “Everybody in America does it, so why shouldnt we?” She knew I was secure in my Jewish identity.

Normally I find myself eagerly anticipating the end of the year — I look forward to the presents, the well wishes from friends and strangers alike, the time off from work. Its a chance to look back over the year that was and prepare for the year to come. The world changes, but this time of year, these remaining holidays, we try to keep as similar as possible. We like these little islands of time that change a bit more slowly than the rest of our lives.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="d1W1M7">
In 2020, however, its harder to appreciate that island of time when <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/5/7/21248259/why-time-feels-so-weird-right-now-quarantine-coronavirus-pandemic">time has ceased to have meaning</a>. Each day blends into the next, and as I write this (on December 23), its hard to believe that Christmas is just two days away, even though looking at my calendar will tell me that it is. I still havent put up my tree. Ill get to it when I get to it, maybe on December 27 or something.

YouTube, as always, has stepped into this void Ive felt. Some of my favorite channels for creating “ambience” — soundscapes meant to replicate particular real-world experiences, usually with slightly animated visuals to match — have gone all out this holiday season, creating Christmas atmospheres that are lovely, festive, and aching reminders of the world that used to exist.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="DTobvA">
Particularly popular are <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a9GixtqVP4">“Christmas coffee shop” settings</a>. There are seemingly thousands of these (though its probably only “dozens”), and they tend to feature the same elements. Theres a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJhmK6kXqr4">coffee shop decorated for the holidays</a>, steaming <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDhuXiK5lfw">hot drinks on the tables</a>. Theres <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zWd6z0pwEM">soft Christmas music</a> (and often <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk-7F-vixko">a crackling fire</a>). Theres <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtGaoDORPlw">snow peacefully falling outside</a>. Heres one <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVL3XIjfTxc">specifically set at Starbucks</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="1lsHWF">
A friend and I will sometimes gather on Zoom, pull up one of these videos on screen share, then talk about how we wish we were sitting in a very real coffee shop, talking face to face. For now, this is a substitute.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="jt426z">
Whats slightly eerie about these videos is the fact that none of them have any people, not even a bored barista behind the counter. These are Christmas coffee shops devoid of humans (though <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a9GixtqVP4">one of my favorites</a> occasionally has someone walk by on the sidewalk outside). Watching them, it really does feel like the world is waiting for us to come back to it, as though these cheery holiday spaces are still out there somewhere, if only we could find them.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="9v2S0O">
But that emptiness also makes it easier for my friend and me to project ourselves into those spaces. If nobody else is here, maybe we can grab a cup of cider or hot cocoa and sit down together without worrying about everything worth worrying about right now. It might be an idealized space, and it says something about 2020 that its easier to imagine an idealized coffee shop as an empty one than ever before.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="DfyVVY">
YouTube is lousy with Christmas and winter soundscapes, which I turn to every year, because California Christmas will always be just a touch disappointing to a Midwestern girl raised on drifting snow. I love <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQt4t8E-BPE">this visit to a Christmas-y apartment</a> in 1950s New York, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7i8pA3ClJw">this check-in</a> at Santas office, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA9Y9Dp2D-8">this peaceful mountain cabin</a> in the middle of a blizzard. Or consider <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiW7CBz2Qfs">this look at a Christmas party</a> seen from outside of the house where its being held (look at all those people inside; wouldnt you like to join them?). Or <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBTgNN3UjiU">this Victorian Christmas storefront</a>? I could go on.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="SMhvEp">
The point is, we might feel unmoored in time right now, but the promise of finding this one tiny island where everything is the same and nothing has changed is intensely appealing. I dont know if there are so many Christmas coffee shops on YouTube this year because were all missing the trappings of the season or because those of us who spend time on YouTubes ambience channels keep watching them, but those two hypotheses are kind of the same thing. Christmas is best shared with other people. We cant do that right now, but until we can, we can at least pretend.
