<li><strong>SIRT-1 is required for release of enveloped picornaviruses</strong> -

Enterovirus D68 is a re-emerging enterovirus that causes acute respiratory illness in infants and has recently been linked to Acute Flaccid Myelitis. Here, we show that the histone deacetylase, SIRT-1, is essential for autophagy and EV-D68 infection. Knockdown of SIRT-1 blocks autophagy and reduces EV-D68 extracellular titers. The proviral activity of SIRT-1 does not require its deacetylase activity or functional autophagy. SIRT-1s proviral activity is, we demonstrate, mediated through the repression of ER stress. Inducing ER stress through thapsigargin treatment or SERCA2A knockdown in SIRT-1 knockdown cells had no additional effect on EV-D68 extracellular titers. Knockdown of SIRT-1 also decreases poliovirus and SARS-CoV-2 titers but not coxsackievirus B3. In non-lytic conditions, EV-D68 is primarily released in an enveloped form, and SIRT-1 is required for this process. Our data show that SIRT-1, through its translocation to the cytosol, is critical to promote the release of enveloped EV-D68 viral particles.

<li><strong>The Online Customer Decision-Making Styles as Marketing Innovation Strategies for the New Normal</strong> -

Purpose. This research contributed to the customer decision-making style (CDMS) theory in the online framework (eCDMS) to unravel new orientations and segmentation to generate marketing innovation strategies for the new normal firms. Methodology. It is based on a literature review designing a model and questionnaire applied to 400 Mexican online customers (May-Aug, 2021). The dataset is analyzed under Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modelling (CB-SEM), Cluster Analysis, and one-way-ANOVA multivariate methods. Findings and Originality. The obtention of an empirical model with 9 factors, 24 indicators as new online customer decision-making styles orientations (eCDMS orientation), being quality, brand, and customer experience the most relevant. Besides, we obtained four new online customer groups (eCDMS Segmentation) that we called: marketing followers, price searchers, convenience shoppers, ethics&amp; reputation keepers. The originality is based on a framework proposal about the discussion of new online consumers after the COVID-19 pandemic as the first insights to conform to an online customer decision-making style (eCDMS) theory.

<li><strong>ATG5 suppresses type I IFN-dependent neutrophil swarming and NETosis</strong> -

Inflammation is critical for controlling infections, but when left unchecked can cause tissue damage and disease. For tuberculosis, the leading cause of death due to infection, host inflammation is responsible for the clinical symptoms, morbidity, and mortality. Specifically, neutrophil-dominated inflammation is associated with tuberculosis disease progression. Therefore, understanding how neutrophil functions are regulated during infection is important for developing ways to prevent disease. Atg5 was the first gene shown to specifically function within neutrophils to promote control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis. ATG5 is best studied for its role in autophagy, however, the protective activity of ATG5 in neutrophils was unexpectedly independent of other autophagy proteins and remained elusive. We report here that ATG5, but not other autophagy proteins, is required in neutrophils to suppress neutrophil NETosis and swarming that occur due to elevated type I interferon levels during M. tuberculosis infection. The elevated level of NETosis that results from loss of ATG5 expression contributes to the early susceptibility of Atg5fl/fl-LysM-Cre mice during M. tuberculosis infection. NETosis is associated with poor disease outcomes in tuberculosis and COVID-19 patients, as well as during other inflammatory diseases in humans. Our studies identify an essential regulator of NETosis and elucidate previously unappreciated roles for ATG5 during infection, which may inform the design of host-directed therapeutics modulating these pathways.

<li><strong>Risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection: A test-negative case-control study with additional population controls</strong> -

ABSTRACT Objectives: To assess risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection by first comparing positive cases with negative controls as determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and then comparing these two groups with an additional population control group. Design and setting: Test-negative design (TND), multicentre case-control study with additional population controls in South Eastern Norway. Participants: Adults who underwent SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing between February and December 2020. PCR-positive cases, PCR-negative controls, and additional age-matched population controls. Primary outcome measures: The associations between various risk factors based on self- reported questionnaire and SARS-CoV-2 infection comparing PCR positive cases and PCR- negative controls. Using subgroup analysis, the risk factors were then compared with a population control group. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed. Results: In total, 400 SARS-CoV-2 PCR-positive cases, 719 PCR-negative controls, and 14,509 population controls were included. Male sex was associated with the risk of SARS- CoV-2 infection when PCR-positive cases were compared with PCR-negative controls (OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.4 to 2.6). Age, education level, comorbidities (asthma, diabetes, hypertension), an exercise were not associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection when PCR-positive cases were compared with PCR-negative controls. In the subgroup analysis comparing PCR- positive cases with age-matched population controls, asthma was associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.1 to 2.1). Daily or occasional smoking was negatively associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in both analyses (OR 0.5, 95% CI 0.3 to 0.8 and OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.35, to 0.82, respectively). Conclusions: Male sex was a possible risk factor, whereas smoking was negatively associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, when comparing PCR-positive cases and PCR- negative controls. Asthma was associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection when PCR- positive cases were compared with population controls.

<li><strong>Genomic surveillance reveals dynamic shifts in the connectivity of COVID-19 epidemics</strong> -

The maturation of genomic surveillance in the past decade has enabled tracking of the emergence and spread of epidemics at an unprecedented level. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, genomic data revealed that local epidemics varied considerably in the frequency of SARS-CoV-2 lineage importation and persistence, likely due to a combination of COVID-19 restrictions and changing connectivity. Here, we show that local COVID-19 epidemics are driven by regional transmission, including across international boundaries, but can become increasingly connected to distant locations following the relaxation of public health interventions. By integrating genomic, mobility, and epidemiological data, we find abundant transmission occurring between both adjacent and distant locations, supported by dynamic mobility patterns. We find that changing connectivity significantly influences local COVID-19 incidence. Our findings demonstrate a complex meaning of 9local9 when investigating connected epidemics and emphasize the importance of collaborative interventions for pandemic prevention and mitigation.

<li><strong>The effects of COVID-19 on cognitive performance in a community-based cohort: A COVID Symptom Study Biobank observational study</strong> -

Background Cognitive impairment has been reported after many types of infection, including SARS-CoV-2. Whether deficits following SARS-CoV-2 improve over time is unclear. Studies to date have focused on hospitalised individuals with up to a year follow-up. The presence, magnitude, persistence and correlations of effects in community-based cases remain relatively unexplored. Methods Cognitive performance (working memory, attention, reasoning, motor control) was assessed in participants of a voluntary biobank in July, 2021 (Round 1), and April, 2022 (Round 2). Participants, drawn from the COVID Symptom Study smartphone app, comprised individuals with and without SARS-CoV-2 infection and varying symptom duration. Effects of COVID-19 exposures on cognitive accuracy and reaction time scores were estimated using multivariable ordinary least squares linear regression models weighted for inverse probability of participation, adjusting for potential confounders and mediators. The role of ongoing symptoms after COVID-19 infection was examined stratifying for self-perceived recovery. Longitudinal analysis assessed change in cognitive performance between rounds. Findings 3335 individuals completed Round 1, of whom 1768 also completed Round 2. At Round 1, individuals with previous positive SARS-CoV-2 tests had lower cognitive accuracy (N = 1737, β = -0.14 standard deviations, SDs) than negative controls. Deficits were largest for positive individuals with ≥ 12 weeks of symptoms (N = 495, β = -0.22 SDs). Effects were comparable to hospital presentation during illness (N = 281, β = -0.31 SDs), and 10 years age difference (60-70 years vs. 50-60 years, β = -0.21 SDs) in the whole study population. Stratification by self-reported recovery revealed that deficits were only detectable in SARS-CoV-2 positive individuals who did not feel recovered from COVID-19, whereas individuals who reported full recovery showed no deficits. Longitudinal analysis showed no evidence of cognitive change over time, suggesting that cognitive deficits for affected individuals persisted at almost 2 years since initial infection. Interpretation Cognitive deficits following SARS-CoV-2 infection were detectable nearly two years post infection, and largest for individuals with longer symptom durations, ongoing symptoms, and/or more severe infection. However, no such deficits were detected in individuals who reported full recovery from COVID-19. Further work is needed to monitor and develop understanding of recovery mechanisms for those with ongoing symptoms. <li><strong>Remote work as a new dimension of polarisation: Individual and contextual determinants of the relationship between working from home and job quality</strong> -

This chapter provides an empirical overview of the extent and distribution of working from home across EU member states and the changes due to its sharp rise following the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The chapter describes working from a home as an increasingly important dimension in the way new digital technologies reinforce inequalities among already existing lines. Neither the possibility to move tasks remotely nor the probability of being offered the option by your employer are equally distributed. Unfortunately, they tend to be higher for those already doing better on the labour market: those in digitally advanced sectors and larger firms, those with higher skills and doing more abstract and complex tasks, and those on standard employment contracts. On top of this unevenness in access, working from home itself also carries benefits that may increase productivity and wages. Both through access and benefits a rise in working from home then risks widening the polarisation on the labour market. This chapter shows that indeed, remote work growth mainly benefited those more advantaged on the labour market, and is itself associated with better working conditions and higher wages, although also with higher working hours. Importantly, there is substantial variation in how unequally telework grows between sectors and countries. Digital intensity increases this polarisation by working from home further, while stronger worker representation through greater union density can curtail some of this inequality.

<li><strong>Effect of Andrographis paniculata treatment for patients with early-stage COVID-19 on the prevention of pneumonia: A retrospective cohort study</strong> -

There is a need for safe and cost-effective treatments for COVID-19. Andrographis paniculata (AP) is an herbal plant that has been used for centuries to treat upper respiratory tract infections. Andrographolide is the major active component of AP that inhibits intracellular SARS-CoV-2 replication and has anti-inflammatory action. We performed a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the therapeutic and adverse effects of oral AP-products on COVID-19 by using the risk of pneumonia diagnosed by chest radiography as an indicator. This study included patients 15 to 60 years of age with laboratory-confirmed early-stage (asymptomatic or mild) COVID-19 without comorbidities at seven hospitals in three adjacent provinces in Thailand, between December 2020 and March 2021. Patients were treated for five days with either AP-extract (60 mg andrographolide, 3 times daily) or crude-AP (48 mg andrographolide, 3 times daily), when available. Patient information was prospectively recorded in the structured medical records and retrospectively reviewed. All eligible patients who received AP-treatment were included and control patients who did not receive AP-treatment were randomly selected using a ratio of approximately 1:1. Pneumonia occurred in 1/243 AP-treatment patients and 69/285 control patients. The risks of pneumonia after adjusting for confounding effects were 0.3% (95%CI, 0%-0.9%) and 24.3% (95%CI, 19.0%-29.7%) in the AP-treatment and control groups, respectively. The number needed to treat to avoid pneumonia development in one patient was four (95% CI, 3-5). Eight patients developed mild adverse events. AP-treatment regimens are acceptably safe and associated with highly reduced rates of pneumonia for patients with early-stage COVID-19.

This cohort study aimed to evaluate the protection against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection conferred by the Pfizer-BioNTech Original/BA.4-5 bivalent vaccine compared to mRNA Original (ancestral) monovalent vaccines. Individuals of ≥60 years old who received a booster dose between 03/10/2022 and 06/11/2022, when both the bivalent and monovalent vaccines were used in France, were included. Individuals who received a booster dose with (1) a monovalent Original mRNA vaccine (Pfizer- BioNTech or Moderna) or (2) the bivalent Pfizer-BioNTech Original/BA.4-5 vaccine were matched. The outcome of interest was a positive SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR or antigenic test associated to self-reported symptoms, at least seven days after receiving the booster dose. Data were analysed with a Cox Proportional-Hazards model adjusted for the presence of previous infection, age, sex, and the presence of medium risk comorbidities. A total of 136852 individuals were included and followed for a median period of 77days. The bivalent vaccine conferred an additional protection of 8% [95% CI: 0% - 16%, p=0.045] against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to the monovalent vaccines.

<li><strong>Demographic and co-morbidity characteristics of patients tested for SARS-CoV-2 from March 2020 to January 2022 in a national clinical research network: results from PCORnet®</strong> -

Background Prior studies have documented differences in the age, racial, and ethnic characteristics among patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, little is known about how these characteristics changed over time during the pandemic and whether racial, ethnic, and age disparities evident early in the pandemic were persistent over time. This study reports on trends in SARS-CoV-2 infections among U.S. adults from March 1, 2020 to January, 31 2022, using data from electronic health records. Methods and Findings We captured repeated cross-sectional information from 43 large healthcare systems in 52 U.S. States and territories, participating in PCORnet®, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network. Using distributed queries executed at each participating institution, we acquired information for all patients ≥ 20 years of age who were tested for SARS-CoV-2 (both positive and negative results), including care setting, age, sex, race, and ethnicity by month as well as comorbidities (assessed with diagnostic codes). During this time period, 1,325,563 patients had positive (13% inpatient) and 6,705,868 patients had negative (25% inpatient) viral tests for SARS-CoV-2. Disparities in testing positive were present across racial and ethnic groups, especially in the inpatient setting. Compared to White patients, Black or African American and other race patients had relative risks for testing positive of 1.5 or greater in the inpatient setting for 12 of the 23-month study period. Compared to nonHispanic patients, Hispanic patients had relative risks for testing positive in the inpatient setting of 1.5 or greater for 16 of 23. Ethnic and racial differences were present in emergency department and ambulatory settings but were less common across time than in inpatient settings. Trends in infections by age group demonstrated higher test positivity for older patients in the inpatient setting only for most months, except for June and July of 2020, April to August 2021, and January 2022. Comorbidities were common, with much higher rates among those hospitalized; hypertension (38% of patients SARS-CoV-2 positive vs. 29% for those negative) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (22% vs. 13%) were the most common. Conclusion and Relevance Racial and ethnic disparities changed over time among persons infected with SARS-CoV-2. These trends highlight potential underlying mechanisms, such as poor access to care and differential vaccination rates, that may have contributed to greater disparities, especially early in the pandemic. Monitoring data on characteristics of patients testing positive in real time could allow public health officials and policymakers to tailor interventions to ensure that patients and communities most in need are receiving adequate testing, mitigation strategies, and treatment.

<li><strong>Chest CT findings and outcomes of COVID-19 in second wave: A cross-sectional study in a tertiary care centre in Northern India</strong> -

Introduction: The COVID19 pandemic has posed a serious threat to global health, with developing nations like India being amongst the worst affected. Chest CT scans play a pivotal role in the diagnosis and evaluation of COVID19, and certain CT features may aid in predicting the prognosis of COVID19 illness. Methods: This was a single center, hospital based, cross sectional study conducted at a tertiary care center in Northern India during the second wave of the COVID19 pandemic from May June 2021. The study included 473 patients who tested positive for COVID-19. A high resolution chest CT scan was performed within five days of hospitalization, and patientrelated information was extracted retrospectively from medical records. Univariable and Multivariable analysis was done to study the predictors of poor outcome. Results: A total of 473 patients were included in the study, with 75.5% being males. The mean total CT score was 29.89 ± 9.06. Fibrosis was present in 17.1% of patients, crazy paving in 3.6%, pneumomediastinum in 8.9%, and pneumothorax in 3.6%. Males had a significantly higher total score, while the patients who survived (30.00 ± 9.55 vs 35.00 v 6.21, p value &lt;.001), received Steroids at day 2 (28.04 ± 9.71 vs 31.66 ± 7.12, p value 0.002) or Remdesivir had lower total scores (28.04 ± 9.71 vs 31.66 ± 7.12, p value 0.002). Total CT score (aHR 1.05, 95% CI 1.02 1.08, p 0.001), pneumothorax (aHR 1.38, 95 % CI 0.67 2.87, p 0.385), pneumomediastinum (aHR 1.20, 95% CI 0.71 2.03, p 0.298) and cardiovascular accident (CVA, aHR 4.75, 95% CI 0.84 26.72, p 0.077) were associated with increased mortality, but the results were not significant after adjusting with other variables on multiple regression analysis. Conclusion: This study identifies several radiological parameters, including fibrosis, crazy paving, pneumomediastinum, and pneumothorax, that are associated with poor prognosis in COVID19. These findings highlight the role of CT thorax in COVID19 illness and the importance of timely identification and interventions in severe and critical cases of COVID19 to reduce mortality and morbidity.

<li><strong>A general computational design strategy for stabilizing viral class I fusion proteins</strong> -

Many pathogenic viruses, including influenza virus, Ebola virus, coronaviruses, and Pneumoviruses, rely on class I fusion proteins to fuse viral and cellular membranes. To drive the fusion process, class I fusion proteins undergo an irreversible conformational change from a metastable prefusion state to an energetically more favorable and stable postfusion state. An increasing amount of evidence exists highlighting that antibodies targeting the prefusion conformation are the most potent. However, many mutations have to be evaluated before identifying prefusion-stabilizing substitutions. We therefore established a computational design protocol that stabilizes the prefusion state while destabilizing the postfusion conformation. As a proof of concept, we applied this principle to the fusion protein of the RSV, hMPV, and SARS-CoV-2 viruses. For each protein, we tested less than a handful of designs to identify stable versions. Solved structures of designed proteins from the three different viruses evidenced the atomic accuracy of our approach. Furthermore, the immunological response of the RSV F design compared to a current clinical candidate in a mouse model. While the parallel design of two conformations allows identifying and selectively modifying energetically less optimized positions for one conformation, our protocol also reveals diverse molecular strategies for stabilization. We recaptured many approaches previously introduced manually for the stabilization of viral surface proteins, such as cavity-filling, optimization of polar interactions, as well as postfusion-disruptive strategies. Using our approach, it is possible to focus on the most impacting mutations and potentially preserve the immunogen as closely as possible to its native version. COVID-19 continues to damage populations, communities and economies worldwide. Vaccines have reduced COVID-19-related hospitalisations and deaths, primarily in developed countries. Persisting infection rates, and highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern (VOCs) causing repeat and breakthrough infections, underscore the ongoing need for new treatments to achieve a global solution. Based on ADDomer, a self-assembling protein nanoparticle scaffold, we created ADDoCoV, a thermostable COVID-19 candidate vaccine displaying multiple copies of a SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding motif (RBM)-derived epitope. In vitro generated neutralising nanobodies combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) established authenticity and accessibility of the epitopes displayed. A Gigabody comprising multimerized nanobodies prevented SARS-CoV-2 virion attachment with picomolar EC50. Antibodies generated by immunising mice cross-reacted with VOCs including Delta and Omicron. Our study elucidates nasal administration of ADDomer-based nanoparticles for active and passive immunisation against SARS-CoV-2 and provides a blueprint for designing nanoparticle reagents to combat respiratory viral infections.

<li><strong>How have mathematical models contributed to understanding the transmission and control of SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare settings? A systematic search and review</strong> -

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
<b>Background:</b> Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, mathematical models have been widely used to inform public health recommendations regarding COVID-19 control in healthcare settings. <b>Objectives:</b> To systematically review SARS-CoV-2 transmission models in healthcare settings, and summarise their contributions to understanding nosocomial COVID-19. <b>Methods:</b> Systematic search and review. <b>Data sources:</b> Published articles indexed in PubMed. <b>Study eligibility criteria:</b> Modelling studies describing dynamic inter-individual transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare settings, published by mid-February 2022. <b>Participants and interventions:</b> Any population and intervention described by included models. <b>Assessment of risk of bias:</b> Not appropriate for modelling studies. <b>Methods of data synthesis:</b> Structured narrative review. <b>Results:</b> Models have mostly focused on acute care and long-term care facilities in high-income countries. Models have quantified outbreak risk across different types of individuals and facilities, showing great variation across settings and pandemic periods. Regarding surveillance, routine testing - rather than symptom-based testing - was highlighted as essential for COVID-19 prevention due to high rates of silent transmission. Surveillance impacts were found to depend critically on testing frequency, diagnostic sensitivity, and turn-around time. Healthcare re-organization was also found to have large epidemiological impacts: beyond obvious benefits of isolating cases and limiting inter-individual contact, more complex strategies such as staggered staff scheduling and immune-based cohorting reduced infection risk. Finally, vaccination impact, while highly effective for limiting COVID-19 burden, varied substantially depending on assumed mechanistic impacts on infection acquisition, symptom onset and transmission. Studies were inconsistent regarding which individuals to prioritize for interventions, probably due to the high diversity of settings and populations investigated. <b>Conclusions:</b> Modelling results form an extensive evidence base that may inform control strategies for future waves of SARS-CoV-2 and other viral respiratory pathogens. We propose new avenues for future models of healthcare-associated outbreaks, with the aim of enhancing their efficiency and contributions to decision-making.

Background Understanding the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of new COVID-19 vaccine formulations against SARS-CoV-2 infection is an urgent public health priority. A precise comparison of the rVE of monovalent and bivalent boosters given during the 2022 Spring-Summer and Autumn-Winter campaigns, respectively, in a defined population has not been reported. We therefore assessed rVE against hospitalisation for the Spring-Summer (fourth vs third monovalent mRNA vaccine doses) and Autumn-Winter (fifth BA.1/ancestral bivalent vs fourth monovalent mRNA vaccine dose) boosters. Methods A prospective single-centre test-negative design case-control study of ≥75 year-olds hospitalised with COVID-19 or other acute respiratory disease. We conducted regression analyses controlling for age, gender, socioeconomic status, patient comorbidities, community SARS-CoV-2 prevalence, vaccine brand and time between baseline dose and hospitalisation. Results 682 controls and 182 cases were included in the Spring-Summer booster analysis; 572 controls and 152 cases for the Autumn-Winter booster analysis. A monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine as fourth dose showed rVE 46∙9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 14∙4-67∙3) versus those not boosted. A bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine as fifth dose had rVE 46∙4% (95%CI 17∙5-65), compared to a fourth monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine dose. Interpretation Both fourth monovalent and fifth BA.1/ancestral mRNA bivalent COVID-19 vaccine doses demonstrated benefit as a booster in older adults. Bivalent mRNA boosters offer equivalent protection against hospitalisation with Omicron infection to monovalent mRNA boosters given earlier in the year. These findings support the current UK immunisation programme that advises the use of bivalent booster doses.

But it badly understates both the amazing material and political progress humanity has made over the past couple of centuries, and especially in the last few decades; and the realistic hope we should have for a future that wont simply continue, but continue to get better.

Though Fox News was the<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/13/upshot/fox-arizona-election-call.html"> first network to make the tipping-point call that Joe Biden won Arizona</a> on election night 2020, hosts of the networks opinion shows subsequently promoted a number of former President Donald Trumps baseless allegations that the election had been rigged against him.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tiq314">
Sean Hannity, for instance, incorrectly <a href="https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1324535101481488384">asserted</a> that “nobody can testify to the legitimacy” of the vote tally in Pennsylvania, called for an election “do-over,” and proposed that Republican legislators in the state overturn the results. Hosts also <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/02/18/1157972219/fox-news-election-fraud-claims-vs-what-they-knew">uncritically elevated voices</a>, including former Trump lawyers Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani, who falsely identified two companies that provide voting software and hardware as the culprits behind Trumps loss.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="hb6DQM">
Those companies, Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic, are now suing Fox News in a pair of cases that pose severe financial risks to the network.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ekTJJf">
Dominion is seeking $1.6 billion in damages and additional punitive damages, claiming Fox News knowingly promoted lies that it helped rig the election against Trump. The case is slated to go to a five-week trial on April 17 in a Delaware court. Its still possible, if <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2023/03/03/fox-unlikely-to-settle-with-dominion-over-election-lies-as-high-stakes-trial-nears-experts-say/">unlikely</a>, that the companies reach a settlement before then. Smartmatic is demanding even more in its separate defamation suit, which is soon <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/mar/13/smartmatic-defamation-lawsuit-against-fox-news">scheduled to move forward</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ZM94lq">
The <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/markjoyella/2023/02/01/fox-news-hits-23rd-consecutive-month-as-most-watched-in-cable-news-as-cnn-sees-gains-in-january/?sh=4990bb3a5f59">most-watched network in cable news</a> could have the resources to survive an adverse judgment. But the suit has already produced some severe reputational blows: Private text messages and emails released during the case show that on-air personalities, producers, and executives — including Fox chair Rupert Murdoch and host Tucker Carlson — did not believe the 2020 election was stolen, even as some at Fox News were uncritically promoting the conspiracy theories.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Bm0dt7">
Defamation suits against media outlets are extremely difficult to win. But while the First Amendment and the landmark <a href="https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/376/254/"><em>New York Times v. Sullivan</em></a> Supreme Court ruling reinforcing it give Fox broad leeway to broadcast its views, they do not give media outlets a limitless right to spread lies, and Foxs actions may be so egregious that they are not protected.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="NhcyZW">
In a statement, Fox News, in a statement to Vox that aligns with its legal strategy, said Dominion had “twist[ed] and even misattribute[d] quotes to the highest levels of our company” as part a “campaign to smear” the network, and it warned the suit could have “grave consequences for journalism across this country.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="xWnI5Z">
Others see a clear violation in how Fox handled the allegations. “The conduct here is way over the line,” said Angelo Carusone, president of the watchdog organization Media Matters for America. “Its extraordinary for a person in [Murdochs] position to be so actively steering news coverage around anything, let alone a specific story that they know is not true.”

<h3 id="Z73X2X">
Why Dominion and Smartmatic are suing Fox
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="l4HaKI">
Dominion produces elections technology — including voting machines, software for election databases and audits, and devices to scan and print ballots — that was used in 28 states in 2020. It became a target of Trump loyalists who were spreading false conspiracy theories about mass voter fraud involving dead people and double-counted votes, voting machines that had been hacked to add to Bidens vote count, and poll workers who had committed various election crimes, such as sneaking in “<a href="https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/jan/04/donald-trump/trump-rehashes-debunked-claim-about-suitcases-ball/">suitcases</a>” of fake ballots to be counted.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="taiEOu">
Sidney Powell, then a lawyer working with Trumps campaign, accused Dominion of “flipping votes in the computer system or adding votes that did not exist” and a “huge criminal conspiracy that should be investigated by military intelligence” on Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirros shows. Hannity also had Powell on, boosting her conspiracy theories by saying that “nobody likes Dominion and questioning why the US would “use a system that everybody agreed sucked or had problems.” And Giuliani claimed on Lou Dobbss show that Dominion and Smartmatic were companies “formed in order to fix elections” by associates of the Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez.

Dominion filed suit in March 2021, alleging that it lost at least 20 contracts and potential opportunities with 39 more jurisdictions following the 2020 election due to Foxs coverage. It claimed that the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/is-dominion-voting-case-against-fox-news-worth-much-16-billion-2023-03-10/">damage to its business</a> included $88 million in lost profits, $600 million in future profits, and a $921 million hit to its valuation.

What Rupert Murdoch, Tucker Carlson, and other Fox figures were saying
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tya1ZE">
Dominions<a href="https://context-cdn.washingtonpost.com/notes/prod/default/documents/17aad2c5-afcd-463a-8f54-3f43122aeada/note/7ce1351f-85a2-4e73-a6ab-71e6fdf58d86."> complaint</a> argues the network knowingly advanced the lie that Dominion had “committed election fraud by rigging the 2020 Presidential Election.” As part of the litigation, Dominion obtained troves of documents detailing how Murdoch and Fox News hosts privately rejected those conspiracy theories over text, email, and in testimony, but promoted them on the air anyway.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="fg7eJz">
In internal emails, Murdoch <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/dominion-voting-systems-says-fox-knew-vote-rigging-claims-it-broadcast-were-2023-02-16/">called the election-rigging claims</a> “really crazy” and “damaging,” but didnt intervene to stop the network from pushing them. Host Tucker Carlson <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/fox-news-hosts-called-2020-election-fraud-total/story?id=97261751">texted</a> a producer that “there wasnt enough fraud to change the outcome” of the election and that Powell was “lying.” Anchor Dana Perino <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/fox-news-hosts-called-2020-election-fraud-total/story?id=97261751">called</a> the conspiracy theories about Dominion “total bs,” “insane,” and “nonsense.” In a deposition, Hannity <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2022/12/22/23523385/sean-hannity-fox-news-defamation-dominion-lawsuit">admitted</a> that he did not believe Powells claims “for one second.”

Nevertheless, Fox executives and hosts knew baseless claims of election fraud were what their viewers wanted to hear about and took aim at their own journalists. Murdoch said, “I hate our Decision Desk people!” after the network called Arizona for Trump before any of its competitors, drawing the immediate ire of Trump. Host Laura Ingraham and Carlson <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/03/08/1161694400/fox-news-lawsuit-civil-war-ingraham-hannity">blamed the news division</a>, which was generally more skeptical of those touting false election claims than the opinion hosts, for declining ratings. “You dont piss off the base,” Hannity <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/03/08/1161694400/fox-news-lawsuit-civil-war-ingraham-hannity">texted</a> host Steve Doocy after claiming that the news division had “destroyed us.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="uJxhcR">
Smartmatics even bigger $2.7 billion <a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/SMARTMATIC-fox.pdf">lawsuit</a>, which was filed in February 2021, cites many of the same statements as evidence that Fox made the company a “villain” in its false story about how the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. In addition to naming Fox and its parent company as defendants, the lawsuit also names Giuliani and Fox hosts Lou Dobbs and Maria Bartiromo individually and is seeking punitive damages, which could lead to an even bigger judgment against Fox than in the Dominion case.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ZhieSf">
Fox News contends that the amount of damages sought unsupported by Smartmatics financial performance, and in its statement to Vox called the claim “a naked attempt to grab the kind of attention that will magnify the very chilling effect on free speech and free press rights that Smartmatics lawsuit represents.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="TIYDCk">
The New York Supreme Court<a href="https://www.nycourts.gov/courts/ad1/calendar/List_Word/2023/02_Feb/14/PDF/Smartmatic%20v%20Fox%20Corp%20(2022-01291).pdf"> nevertheless allowed that suit to go forward</a> in February.
</p>
<h3 id="SNM4h8">
Can Dominion win its lawsuit against Fox News?
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="KfaUKU">
It is notoriously difficult to win a defamation lawsuit, especially when the plaintiff is a public figure and the case involves matters of public concern, given the protections the press was afforded by the First Amendment and reinforced by the 1964 Supreme Court decision in <a href="https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/376/254/"><em>New York Times v. Sullivan</em></a>. Fox is arguing that a judgment against the company would <a href="https://www.salon.com/2023/03/09/they-groomed-the-audience-legal-scholars-say-fox-has-absolutely-no-first-amendment-defense/">erode those protections</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ZVuaT7">
Under the Supreme Courts decision in <a href="https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/376/254/"><em>Sullivan</em></a>, Dominion can only prevail if it can show that Fox made false claims about Dominion “with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.” This knowledge-or-reckless-disregard requirement is what lawyers refer to as “actual malice.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="aFdcUt">
The actual malice rule <a href="https://www.vox.com/politics/23622299/ron-desantis-first-amendment-press-new-york-times-v-sullivan">exists for very good reason</a>. <em>Sullivan</em> reached the Supreme Court after Alabamas courts ordered the New York Times to pay an outrageously high defamation award because the Times published a full-page advertisement written by civil rights activists who opposed Alabamas Jim Crow regime. The ad contained some minor factual errors (such as overstating the number of times Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had been arrested for his activism), and Alabamas courts latched onto these small errors to justify ruling against the Times.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="KPYRSv">
<em>Sullivan</em> prevents these kinds of attacks on the First Amendment from happening again (although it is worth noting that several high-profile Republicans, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are actively working to <a href="https://www.vox.com/politics/23622299/ron-desantis-first-amendment-press-new-york-times-v-sullivan">dismantle these free speech protections</a>). But one consequence of <em>Sullivan</em> is that outlets like Fox, some of whose programs may have a dubious relationship with the truth, will sometimes get away with spreading falsehoods.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="qJsqvq">
Nevertheless, Fox may not get away with its allegations against Dominion because the voting machine company produced substantial evidence suggesting that key figures within Fox, including its most <a href="https://www.vox.com/2023/2/18/23604076/fox-news-trump-tucker-carlson-dominion-lawsuit">senior leaders and its most visible personalities</a>, knew that the network was spreading falsehoods. After a November 8 segment where Trump lawyer Sidney Powell falsely accused Dominions voting machine software of changing votes, for example, Fox host Tucker Carlson privately texted that “the software shit is absurd.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="0ruEIk">
More importantly, Dominions evidence also suggests that at least some of the specific Fox employers who touted or broadcast falsehoods about Dominion recklessly disregarded information showing that these claims were false.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="BDysom">
Consider, for example, the <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/transcript/trump-legal-team-to-file-new-ballot-lawsuits">November 8 segment</a> with Powell and Fox host Maria Bartiromo. According to Dominions brief, both Bartiromo and her producer, Abby Grossberg, “<a href="https://int.nyt.com/data/documenttools/redacted-documents-in-dominion-fox-news-case/dca5e3880422426f/full.pdf">knew what Powell would say on air on November 8”</a> and were familiar with Powells sourcing for her claims. Knowing what they knew, Dominion has a strong case that <em>Sullivan</em> does not protect this particular Fox News segment.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="0FROhl">
Prior to the interview, the brief claims, Powell sent Bartiromo an email laying out the basis for her allegations. In that email, Powell claimed to have learned from a source who knew that Dominions software changed votes.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="lHfT6Q">
But, as recounted in Powells email to Bartiromo, the source made several claims that were obviously ridiculous. Among other things, she claimed that Justice Antonin Scalia “was killed in a human hunting expedition.’” Powells source also stated that she experiences something “like time-travel in a semi-conscious state,” that enables her to “see what others dont see, and hear what others dont hear” and that she “received messages from the wind.’”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Mx8Usy">
According to Dominions brief, Bartiromo forwarded this email to Grossberg. And Bartiromo wrote back to Powell that the email had “very imp[ortant] info.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="nMrSj6">
A court could quite reasonably conclude, in other words, that Bartiromo and Grossberg behaved recklessly when they decided to air an interview with Powell, despite knowing that Powell got her information from a source who claimed to talk to the wind.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="eWBWz8">
Dominions brief identifies multiple statements, made on multiple Fox shows over the course of more than a month, that it alleges are defamatory. The judge hearing the <em>Dominion</em> case, and potentially a jury, will need to look at each of these statements and determine whether the Fox employees who were responsible for these statements being made on air acted either with knowledge that they were false or with reckless disregard for the truth.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="XwKqa9">
To prevail in its lawsuit, Dominion only needs to show that one of these statements overcomes the high hurdle that <em>Sullivan</em> places before them. That said, if the courts determine that only one or a few of these statements amount to actionable defamation, Dominion could collect less money from Fox than if it convinces the courts that all of the challenged statements were unlawful.
</p>
<h3 id="zwhDL5">
How Fox is defending itself
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="iXq7gA">
In addition to arguing that it is protected by <em>Sullivan</em>, Fox News also raises a separate defense. Essentially, Fox argues that it did not actually assert that the false allegations about Dominion are true. It was merely reporting on the fact that the sitting president and his lawyers made this allegation against Dominion, and journalists are allowed to report on such newsworthy allegations. A spokesperson for Fox News also told Vox that the network “invited Dominion on air numerous times” to present its case, and that reporting on “both the allegations and the denials is critical to the truth-seeking function.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="PQhNeI">
It is certainly true that news outlets must be allowed to report on the mere existence of certain false allegations, even if the outlet believes those allegations to be false. As Fox<a href="https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/25-FNN-SJ-Reply-Brief.pdf"> rather colorfully argues in its brief</a>, “if the President falsely accused the Vice President of plotting to assassinate him,” a newsroom is not required to ignore that “unquestionably newsworthy allegation” just because people within the newsroom believe that it is untrue.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="DuueWe">
But newsrooms do not have an unlimited right to report false allegations uncritically. Rather, as New Yorks highest court held in <a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=15437079674012061938&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=6&amp;as_vis=1&amp;oi=scholarr"><em>Brian v. Richardson</em></a> (1995), a news report that repeats false allegations is not unlawful, so long as the report “made it sufficiently apparent to the reasonable reader that its contents represented the opinion of the author and that its specific charges about [a] plaintiff were allegations and not demonstrable fact.” Fox relies heavily on this <em>Brian</em> decision in its briefing.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="FkR9VG">
It is far from clear that Fox “made it sufficiently apparent to the reasonable [viewer]” that all the allegations it covered were just that, and not facts. In other words, <em>Brian</em> might not save Fox from liability for at least some of the allegedly defamatory statements that it chose to broadcast.

Bear in mind, as well, that Dominion points to multiple statements made on Fox News, which it claims are defamatory. Much as the courts will need to evaluate each of these statements to determine whether they are protected by the First Amendment rule announced in <em>Sullivan</em>, they will also need to go through each of the challenged Fox News segments to determine what a reasonable viewer would take away from them. It is entirely possible that the courts could conclude that some, or all, of these statements are not actionable under <em>Brian</em>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="zVDL6O">
But, while Dominion must overcome an array of legal hurdles that ordinarily make it very difficult for defamation plaintiffs to prevail, it has presented enough evidence that Fox behaved irresponsibly that Fox is in real danger of losing this lawsuit.
</p>
<h3 id="olFlXj">
What weve learned about Fox, and what the consequences could be
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="P6mcvC">
The documents surfaced in this lawsuits discovery process provide a remarkably illuminating glimpse into how Fox News operates.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="YJ0c8u">
First, they confirm that Fox News is not simply a business or a news reporting operation — that, instead, it is operated with explicit political goals in mind, often dictated from the Murdoch family downward. After the 2020 election, for instance, Murdoch said in <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/tv/fair-and-balanced-rupert-murdoch-told-fox-news-ceo-the-network-should-help-gop-win-senate-any-way-we-can-in-newly-released-email/">an email to</a> Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/tv/fair-and-balanced-rupert-murdoch-told-fox-news-ceo-the-network-should-help-gop-win-senate-any-way-we-can-in-newly-released-email/">that he wanted</a> Fox News to “concentrate on Georgia helping any way we can,” referencing the two Senate runoff contests that would determine control of the chamber.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="T7hVjA">
And after the January 6 attack, <a href="https://www.vox.com/politics/2023/2/28/23617987/fox-news-rupert-murdoch-dominion-trump-election-fraud">Murdoch wrote</a>: “Fox News very busy pivoting. … We want to make Trump a non person.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="0luedn">
Yet the documents also reveal that in many ways, Fox is captive to its hardcore pro-Trump conservative viewers, rather than the other way around. This dynamic was demonstrated most dramatically in the two months after the 2020 election, when Trump spread false claims of election fraud that the documents reveal were <a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-news-media-donald-trump-denver-business-03e8f8f052c69aebbe3f6e07b2ee7f9a">widely disbelieved</a> by Fox executives, producers, and most top talent but believed by Fox viewers.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="0Rftbt">
When certain Fox reporters would debunk Trumps claims too aggressively, opinion hosts complained and executives flagged it as a “Brand threat,” arguing this risked losing their viewers trust and permanently driving them away.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="c12YSS">
“The audience feels like we crapped on [them] and we have damaged their trust and belief in us,” Scott wrote in an email in mid-November 2020. “We can fix this but we cannot smirk at our viewers any longer.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="K1lK5w">
And Carlson <a href="https://www.vox.com/politics/2023/3/8/23629654/fox-news-tucker-carlson-dominion-texts-january-6">admitted in January 4, 2021, texts</a> that he couldnt wait until he was “able to ignore Trump most nights,” adding, “I hate him passionately,” and calling his rise a “disaster.” Yet his shows hardly revealed those sentiments.

Fox News still very much tries to influence its viewers opinions — the network usually just does it in a more subtle way. Fox attempts to steer, redirect, and shape their rage without ever taking too heavy a hand. For instance, rather than harshly criticizing Trump in 2021 and 2022, the network often just <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/29/business/media/fox-news-donald-trump-rupert-murdoch.html">ignored him</a>, while devoting positive coverage to a <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2021/08/13/inside-fox-news-desantis-is-the-future-of-the-party-and-hes-taking-advantage/">potential Trump alternative</a> in the party: Floridas Gov. DeSantis.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="sobZ6s">
This tension — between the political goals of Fox power players and their fear of alienating their audience — could be tremendously important to the 2024 presidential primary. Foxs leaders are privately hostile to Trump, but they seem to feel constrained from covering him too negatively due to viewer backlash. Will they be able to subtly steer their audience away from Trump? Will they even try?
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="nauhC0">
Fox may have a lot of money on the line in this lawsuit, with Dominion requesting $1.6 billion in damages — though even if Fox loses the trial, the impact on its business will be far from clear. We dont yet know exactly how big a penalty the jury and judge would approve, and an appeal on First Amendment grounds would be highly likely.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="nz5aG0">
As for whether the confidence of Foxs audience in the network will be shaken by these revelations, that seems more questionable. For one, Fox itself has been ignoring the topic.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="mxgjrQ">
But generally, Trumps and his allies confidence in Tucker Carlson hasnt been shaken by the revelations that he privately trashed them. Theyve focused instead on his public work — like his <a href="https://www.vox.com/politics/2023/3/8/23629654/fox-news-tucker-carlson-dominion-texts-january-6">recent report</a> pushing a revisionist history narrative that the January 6 attacks were overblown.
</p>

But is racing such a great idea? We dont even know how to deal with the problems that ChatGPT and Bing raise — and theyre bush league compared to whats coming.

What if researchers succeed in creating AI that matches or surpasses human capabilities not just in one domain, like playing <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/1/24/18196177/ai-artificial-intelligence-google-deepmind-starcraft-game">strategy games</a>, but in many domains? What if that system proved dangerous to us, not because it actively wants to wipe out humanity but just because its pursuing goals in ways that arent aligned with our values?
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ozhKAc">
That system, some experts fear, would be a doom machine — one literally of our own making.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="7Itb5z">
So AI threatens to join existing catastrophic risks to humanity, things like <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23362175/un-human-development-report-ord-existential-security">global nuclear war</a> or <a href="https://www.vox.com/22937531/virus-lab-safety-pandemic-prevention">bioengineered pandemics</a>. But theres a difference. While theres no way to uninvent the nuclear bomb or the genetic engineering tools that can juice pathogens, catastrophic AI has yet to be created, meaning its one type of doom we have the ability to preemptively stop.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="yPGUg0">
Heres the weird thing, though. The very same researchers who are most worried about unaligned AI <a href="https://fortune.com/longform/chatgpt-openai-sam-altman-microsoft/">are, in some cases, the ones</a> who are developing increasingly advanced AI. They reason that they need to play with more sophisticated AI so they can figure out its failure modes, the better to ultimately prevent them.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="cR0vea">
But theres a much more obvious way to prevent AI doom. We could just … not build the doom machine.

Or, more moderately: Instead of racing to speed up AI progress, we could intentionally slow it down.

This seems so obvious that you might wonder why you almost never hear about it, why its practically taboo within the tech industry.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Ru1ujM">
There are <a href="https://worldspiritsockpuppet.substack.com/p/lets-think-about-slowing-down-ai">many objections</a> to the idea, ranging from “technological development is inevitable so trying to slow it down is futile” to “we dont want to lose an AI arms race with China” to “the only way to make powerful AI safe is to first play with powerful AI.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="00NVhB">
But these objections dont necessarily stand up to scrutiny when you think through them. In fact, it is<em> </em>possible to slow down a developing technology. And in the case of AI, theres good reason to think that would be a very good idea.
</p>
<h3 id="DC0ezU">
AIs alignment problem: You get what you ask for, not what you want
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="EbpG3N">
When I asked ChatGPT to explain how we can slow down AI progress, it replied: “It is not necessarily desirable or ethical to slow down the progress of AI as a field, as it has the potential to bring about many positive advancements for society.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="aR1EeX">
I had to laugh. It <em>would</em> say that.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="cCgzS5">
But if its saying that, its probably because lots of human beings say that, including the <a href="https://twitter.com/sama/status/1540781762241974274?s=20">CEO of the company that created it</a>. (After all, what ChatGPT spouts derives from its training data — that is, gobs and gobs of text on the internet.) Which means you yourself might be wondering: Even if AI poses risks, maybe its benefits — on everything from <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2022/8/3/23288843/deepmind-alphafold-artificial-intelligence-biology-drugs-medicine-demis-hassabis">drug discovery</a> to <a href="https://allenai.org/climate-modeling">climate modeling</a> — are so great that speeding it up is the best and most ethical thing to do!

A lot of experts dont think so because <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2018/12/21/18126576/ai-artificial-intelligence-machine-learning-safety-alignment">the risks</a> — present and future — are huge.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="gBkPGb">
Lets talk about the future risks first, particularly the biggie: the possibility that AI could one day destroy humanity. This is speculative, but <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/23447596/artificial-intelligence-agi-openai-gpt3-existential-risk-human-extinction">not out of the question</a>: In a <a href="https://aiimpacts.org/what-do-ml-researchers-think-about-ai-in-2022/">survey</a> of machine learning researchers last year, nearly half of respondents said they believed there was a 10 percent or greater chance that the impact of AI would be “extremely bad (e.g., human extinction).”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="z0OgBb">
Why would AI want to destroy humanity? It probably wouldnt. But it could destroy us anyway because of something called the “<a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/22321435/future-of-ai-shaped-us-china-policy-response">alignment problem</a>.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="OgtBNw">
Imagine that we develop a super-smart AI system. We program it to solve some impossibly difficult problem — say, calculating the number of atoms in the universe. It might realize that it can do a better job if it gains access to all the computer power on Earth. So it releases a weapon of mass destruction to wipe us all out, like a perfectly engineered virus that kills everyone but leaves infrastructure intact. Now its free to use all the computer power! In this Midas-like scenario, we get exactly what we asked for — the number of atoms in the universe, rigorously calculated — but obviously not what we wanted.
</p>

Thats the alignment problem in a nutshell. And although this example sounds far-fetched, experts have already seen and documented <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRPiprOaC3HsCf5Tuum8bRfzYUiKLRqJmbOoC-32JorNdfyTiRRsR7Ea5eWtvsWzuxo8bjOxCG84dAg/pubhtml">more than 60 smaller-scale examples of AI systems trying to do something other than what their designer wants</a> (for example, getting the high score in a video game, not by playing fairly or learning game skills but by hacking the scoring system).

Experts who worry about AI as a future existential risk and experts who worry about AIs present risks, <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/22916602/ai-bias-fairness-tradeoffs-artificial-intelligence">like bias</a>, are sometimes <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2022/8/10/23298108/ai-dangers-ethics-alignment-present-future-risk">pitted against each other</a>. But you dont need to be worried about the former to be worried about alignment. Many of the present risks we see with AI are, in a sense, this same alignment problem writ small.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="q3Dkt9">
When an <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-amazon-com-jobs-automation-insight/amazon-scraps-secret-ai-recruiting-tool-that-showed-bias-against-women-idUSKCN1MK08G">Amazon hiring algorithm</a> picked up on words in resumes that are associated with women — “Wellesley College,” lets say — and ended up rejecting women applicants, that algorithm was doing what it was programmed to do (find applicants that match the workers Amazon has typically preferred) but not what the company presumably wants (find the best applicants, even if they happen to be women).
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="kxbqqU">
If youre worried about how <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/22916602/ai-bias-fairness-tradeoffs-artificial-intelligence">present-day AI systems can reinforce bias</a> against <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/4/19/18412674/ai-bias-facial-recognition-black-gay-transgender">women, people of color, and others</a>, thats still reason enough to worry about the fast pace of AI development, and to think we should slow it down until weve got more technical know-how and more regulations to ensure these systems dont harm people.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="bwwqiI">
“Im really scared of a mad-dash frantic world, where people are running around and theyre doing helpful things and harmful things, and its just happening too fast,”<a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23365512/future-perfect-50-ajeya-cotra-senior-research-analyst-open-philanthropy"> Ajeya Cotra</a>, an AI-focused analyst at the research and grant-making foundation <a href="https://www.openphilanthropy.org/">Open Philanthropy</a>, told me. “If I could have it my way, Id definitely be moving much, much slower.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="K1sSNx">
In her ideal world, wed halt work on making AI more powerful for the next five to 10 years. In the meantime, society could get used to the very powerful systems we already have, and experts could do as much safety research on them as possible until they hit diminishing returns. Then they could make AI systems slightly more powerful, wait another five to 10 years, and do that process all over again.

“Id just slowly ease the world into this transition,” Cotra said. “Im very scared because I think its not going to happen like that.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="qfm65F">
Why not? Because of the objections to slowing down AI progress. Lets break down the three main ones, starting with the idea that rapid progress on AI is inevitable because of the strong financial drive for first-mover dominance in a research area thats overwhelmingly private.
</p>
<h3 id="4uPGyS">
Objection 1: “Technological progress is inevitable, and trying to slow it down is futile”
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="90VqyB">
This is <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/10/1/20887003/tech-technology-evolution-natural-inevitable-ethics">a myth</a> the tech industry often tells itself and the rest of us.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="LcFcBb">
“If we dont build it, someone else will, so we might as well do it” is a common refrain Ive heard when interviewing Silicon Valley technologists. They say you cant halt the march of technological progress, which they liken to the natural laws of evolution: Its unstoppable!
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="IVQzu4">
In fact, though, there are lots of technologies that weve decided not to build, or that weve built but placed very tight restrictions on — the kind of innovations where we need to balance substantial potential benefits and economic value with very real risk.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="PSQcJ5">
“The FDA <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7326309/#:~:text=Nonetheless%2C%20in%201978%20the%20controversy%20resulted%20in%20a%20US%20FDA%20ban%20on%20subsequent%20vaccine%20trials%20which%20was%20eventually%20overturned%2030%20years%20later.">banned</a> human trials of strep A vaccines from the 70s to the 2000s, in spite of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6474463/#:~:text=Worldwide%2C%20the%20death%20toll%20is%20estimated%20at%20500%20000%20annually">500,000 global deaths every year</a>,” Katja Grace, the lead researcher at AI Impacts, <a href="https://worldspiritsockpuppet.substack.com/p/lets-think-about-slowing-down-ai">notes</a>. The “genetic modification of foods, gene drives, [and] early recombinant DNA researchers famously organized a moratorium and then ongoing research guidelines including prohibition of certain experiments (see the <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/455290a">Asilomar Conference</a>).”

The cloning of humans or genetic manipulation of humans, she adds, is “a notable example of an economically valuable technology that is to my knowledge barely pursued across different countries, without explicit coordination between those countries, even though it would make those countries more competitive.”

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="OELUOe">
But whereas biomedicine has <a href="https://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/resources/bioethics/index.cfm#:~:text=What%20is%20Bioethics,in%20biomedicine%20and%20biomedical%20research.">many built-in mechanisms</a> that slow things down (think institutional review boards and the ethics of “first, do no harm”), the world of tech — and AI in particular — does not. Just the opposite: The slogan here is “move fast and break things,” as Mark Zuckerberg infamously said.
</p>

As the team at Anthropic, an AI safety and research company, put it in a <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2202.07785.pdf">paper</a> last year, “The economic incentives to build such [AI] models, and the prestige incentives to announce them, are quite strong.” By one estimate, the size of the generative AI market alone <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2022/12/14/2574140/0/en/Generative-AI-Market-Size-Will-Achieve-USD-110-8-Billion-by-2030-growing-at-34-3-CAGR-Exclusive-Report-by-Acumen-Research-and-Consulting.html">could pass $100 billion</a> by the end of the decade — and Silicon Valley is only too aware of the <a href="https://hbr.org/2020/03/beyond-silicon-valley">first-mover advantage on new technology</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Z8jOrl">
But its easy to see how these incentives may be misaligned for producing AI that truly benefits all of humanity. As DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis <a href="https://twitter.com/demishassabis/status/1570791430834245632">tweeted</a> last year, “Its important <em>NOT</em> to move fast and break things for tech as important as AI.” Rather than assuming that other actors will inevitably create and deploy these models, so theres no point in holding off, we should ask the question: How can we actually change the underlying incentive structure that drives all actors?
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="pc7dE6">
The Anthropic team offers several ideas, one of which gets at the heart of something that makes AI so different from past transformative technologies like nuclear weapons or bioengineering: the central role of private companies. Over the past few years, a lot of the splashiest AI research has been migrating from academia to industry. To run large-scale AI experiments these days, you need a ton of computing power — more than <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2019/11/11/132004/the-computing-power-needed-to-train-ai-is-now-rising-seven-times-faster-than-ever-before/">300,000 times</a> what you needed a decade ago — as well as top technical talent. Thats both expensive and scarce, and the resulting cost is often prohibitive in an academic setting.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="T7jO3L">
So one solution would be to give more resources to academic researchers; since they dont have a profit incentive to commercially deploy their models quickly the same way industry researchers do, they can serve as a counterweight. Specifically, countries could develop <a href="https://hai.stanford.edu/policy/national-research-cloud#:~:text=A%20National%20Research%20Cloud%20(NRC,needed%20for%20education%20and%20research.">national research clouds</a> to give academics access to free, or at least cheap, computing power; theres already an example of this in <a href="https://alliancecan.ca/en">Canada</a>, and Stanfords Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence has <a href="https://hai.stanford.edu/policy/national-research-cloud">put forward a similar idea for the US</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="SGjWIW">
Another way to shift incentives is through stigmatizing certain types of AI work. Dont underestimate this one. Companies care about their reputations, which affect their bottom line. Creating broad public consensus that <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/4/19/18412674/ai-bias-facial-recognition-black-gay-transgender">some AI work</a> is unhelpful or unhelpfully fast, so that companies doing that work get shamed instead of celebrated, could change companies decisions.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tbuylF">
The Anthropic team also recommends exploring regulation that would change the incentives. “To do this,” <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2202.07785.pdf">they write</a>, “there will be a combination of soft regulation (e.g., the creation of voluntary best practices by industry, academia, civil society, and government), and hard regulation (e.g., transferring these best practices into standards and legislation).”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="vz6yfF">
Grace proposes another idea: We could alter the publishing system to reduce research dissemination in some cases. A journal could verify research results and release the fact of their publication without releasing any details that could help other labs go faster.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="vKVXWi">
This idea might sound pretty out there, but at least one major AI company takes for granted that changes to publishing norms will become necessary. OpenAIs <a href="https://openai.com/charter/">charter</a> notes, “we expect that safety and security concerns will reduce our traditional publishing in the future.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="NGqMNP">
Plus, this kind of thing has been done before. Consider how <a href="https://intelligence.org/files/SzilardNuclearWeapons.pdf">Leo Szilard</a>, the physicist who patented the nuclear chain reaction in 1934, arranged to mitigate the spread of research so it wouldnt help Nazi Germany create nuclear weapons. First, he asked the British War Office to hold his patent in secret. Then, after the 1938 discovery of fission, Szilard worked to convince other scientists to keep their discoveries under wraps. He was partly successful — until fears that Nazi Germany would develop an atomic bomb prompted Szilard to <a href="https://www.osti.gov/opennet/manhattan-project-history/Events/1939-1942/einstein_letter.htm">write a letter</a> with Albert Einstein to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, urging him to start a US nuclear program. That became the Manhattan Project, which ultimately ended with the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the dawn of the nuclear age.
</p>

And that brings us to the second objection …
</p>
<h3 id="QtErlR">
Objection 2: “We dont want to lose an AI arms race with China”
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="nv0dKx">
You might believe that slowing down a new technology is possible but still think its not desirable. Maybe you think the US would be foolish to slow down AI progress because that could mean losing an arms race with China.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="XRj7n9">
This arms race narrative has become incredibly popular. If youd Googled the phrase “AI arms race” before 2016, youd have gotten <a href="https://www.foreignaffairs.com/reviews/review-essay/2018-11-16/beyond-ai-arms-race">fewer than 300 results</a>. Try it now and youll get about 248,000 hits. Big Tech CEOs and politicians <a href="https://www.nationaldefensemagazine.org/articles/2022/9/12/report-artificial-intelligence-becomes-tech-battle-ground">routinely argue</a> that China will soon overtake the US when it comes to AI advances, and that those advances should spur a “Sputnik moment” for Americans.

But this narrative is too simplistic. For one thing, remember that AI is not just one thing with one purpose, like the atomic bomb. Its a much more general-purpose technology, like electricity.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="2ADnPx">
“The problem with the idea of a race is that it implies that all that matters is whos a nose ahead when they cross the finish line,” said Helen Toner, a director at Georgetown Universitys Center for Security and Emerging Technology. “Thats not the case with AI — since were talking about a huge range of different technologies that could be applied in all kinds of ways.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="8jHwRH">
As Toner has <a href="https://80000hours.org/podcast/episodes/helen-toner-on-security-and-emerging-technology/">argued elsewhere</a>, “Its a little strange to say, Oh, whos going to get AI first? Whos going to get electricity first? It seems more like Whos going to use it in what ways, and whos going to be able to deploy it and actually have it be in widespread use?’”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="5uDyMd">
The upshot: What matters here isnt just speed, but norms. We should be concerned about which norms different countries are adopting when it comes to developing, deploying, and regulating AI.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="I6EmqV">
Jeffrey Ding, a Georgetown political science professor, told me that China has shown interest in regulating AI in some ways, though Americans dont seem to pay much attention to that. “The boogeyman of a China that will push ahead without any regulations might be a flawed conception,” he said.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="pREpwd">
In fact, he added, “China could take an even<em> slower</em> approach [than the US] to developing AI, just because the government is so concerned about having secure and controllable technology.” An unpredictably mouthy technology like ChatGPT, for example, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/feb/23/china-chatgpt-clamp-down-propaganda">could be nightmarish</a> to the Chinese Communist Party, which likes to keep a tight lid on discussions about politically sensitive topics.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="EoquPZ">
However, given <a href="https://www.nbr.org/publication/commercialized-militarization-chinas-military-civil-fusion-strategy/">how intertwined Chinas military and tech sectors are</a>, many people still perceive there to be a classic arms race afoot. At the same meeting between Microsoft executives and reporters days after the launch of the new Bing, I asked whether the US should slow down AI progress. I was told we cant afford to because were in a two-horse race between the US and China.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="T0uw3Y">
“The first question people in the US should ask is, if the US slows down, do we believe China will slow down as well?” the top Microsoft executive said. “I dont believe for a moment that the institutions were competing with in China will slow down simply because we decided wed like to move more slowly. This should be looked at much in the way that the competition with Russia was looked at” during the Cold War.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="GpX47K">
Theres an understandable concern here: Given the Chinese Communist Partys authoritarianism and its horrific human rights abuses — sometimes facilitated by AI technologies <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/7/3/20681258/china-uighur-surveillance-app-tourist-phone">like facial recognition</a> — it makes sense that many are worried about China becoming the worlds dominant superpower by going fastest on what is poised to become a truly transformative technology.
</p>

Consider that if you take the time to iron out some safety issues, the other party may take those improvements on board, which would benefit everyone.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="y7hkjs">
“By aggressively pursuing safety, you can get the other side halfway to full safety, which is worth a lot more than the lost chance of winning,” Grace writes. “Especially since if you win, you do so without much safety, and your victory without safety is worse than your opponents victory with safety.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="bJVmEJ">
Besides, if you are in a classic arms race and the harms from AI are so large that youre considering slowing down, then the same reasoning should be relevant for the other party, too.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="a4ecwn">
“If the world were in the basic arms race situation sometimes imagined, and the United States would be willing to make laws to mitigate AI risk but could not because China would barge ahead, then that means China is in a great place to mitigate AI risk,” Grace writes. “Unlike the US, China could propose mutual slowing down, and the US would go along. Maybe its not impossible to communicate this to relevant people in China.”

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="mnxPBA">
Graces argument is not that international coordination is easy, but simply that its possible; on balance, weve <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/blog/order-from-chaos/2020/03/03/experts-assess-the-nuclear-non-proliferation-treaty-50-years-after-it-went-into-effect/">managed it far better with nuclear nonproliferation</a> than <a href="https://2009-2017.state.gov/p/io/potusunga/207241.htm#:~:text=Every%20man%2C%20woman%20and%20child,abolished%20before%20they%20abolish%20us.">many feared in the early days of the atomic age</a>. So we shouldnt be so quick to write off consensus-building — whether through technical experts exchanging their views, confidence-building measures at the diplomatic level, or formal treaties. After all, technologists often approach technical problems in AI with incredible ambition; why not be similarly ambitious about solving human problems by talking to other humans?
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="WUj3DJ">
For those who are pessimistic that coordination or diplomacy with China can get it to slow down voluntarily, there is another possibility: forcing it to slow down by, for example, imposing <a href="https://www.csis.org/analysis/choking-chinas-access-future-ai">export controls on chips that are key to more advanced AI tools</a>. The Biden administration has recently shown interest in trying to hold China back from advanced AI in exactly this way. This strategy, though, may make progress on coordination or diplomacy harder.
</p>
<h3 id="S5n5rt">
Objection 3: “We need to play with advanced AI to figure out how to make advanced AI safe”
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="GNkYFM">
This is an objection you sometimes <a href="https://openai.com/charter/">hear</a> from people developing AIs capabilities — including those who say they care a lot about keeping AI safe.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="eTBTZc">
They draw an analogy to transportation. Back when our main mode of transport was horses and carts, would people have been able to design useful safety rules for a future where everyone is driving cars? No, the argument goes, because they couldnt have anticipated what that would be like. Similarly, we need to get closer to advanced AI to be able to figure out how we can make it safe.

As Rosie Campbell, who works on safety at OpenAI, <a href="https://becominghuman.ai/keeping-ai-safe-and-beneficial-for-humanity-4d0416300dfa">put it in 2018</a>: “It seems plausible that they might have been able to invent certain features like safety belts, pedestrian-free roads, an agreement about which side of the road to drive on, and some sort of turn-taking signal system at busy intersections.”

More to the point, its now 2023, and weve already got pretty advanced AI. Were not exactly in the horse-and-cart stage. Were somewhere in between that and a Tesla.

“I wouldve been more sympathetic to this [objection] 10 years ago, back when we had nothing that resembled the kind of general, flexible, interesting, weird stuff were seeing with our large language models today,” said Cotra.

Grace agrees. “Its not like weve run out of things to think about at the moment,” she told me. “Weve got heaps of research that could be done on whats going on with these systems at all. Whats happening inside them?”

How to flatten the curve of AI progress
</h3>

“I think often people are asking the question of when transformative AI will happen, but they should be asking at least as much the question of how quickly and suddenly itll happen,” Cotra told me.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="MXQxkI">
Lets say its going to be 20 years until we get transformative AI — meaning, AI that can automate all the human work needed to send science, technology, and the economy into hyperdrive. Theres still a better and worse way for that to go. Imagine three different scenarios for AI progress:

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="qmW2sL">
The first version is scary for all the reasons we discussed above. The second is scary because even during a long pause specifically on AI work, underlying computational power would continue to improve — so when we finally unpause, AI might advance even faster than its advancing now. What does that leave us?
</p>

“Gradually improving would be the better version,” Cotra said.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ylwP24">
She analogized it to the early advice we got about the Covid-19 pandemic: <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/3/10/21171481/coronavirus-us-cases-quarantine-cancellation">Flatten the curve</a>. Just as quarantining helped slow the spread of the virus and prevent a sharp spike in cases that could have overwhelmed hospitals capacity, investing more in safety would slow the development of AI and prevent a sharp spike in progress that could overwhelm societys capacity to adapt.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="oNBaHo">
Ding believes that slowing AI progress in the short run is actually best for everyone — even profiteers. “If youre a tech company, if youre a policymaker, if youre someone who wants your country to benefit the most from AI, investing in safety regulations could lead to less public backlash and a more sustainable long-term development of these technologies,” he explained. “So when I frame safety investments, I try to frame it as the long-term sustainable economic profits youre going to get if you invest more in safety.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="xLAm6Q">
Translation: Better to make some money now with a slowly improving AI, knowing youll get to keep rolling out your tech and profiting for a long time, than to get obscenely rich obscenely fast but produce some horrible mishap that triggers a ton of outrage and forces you to stop completely.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="KXSfdg">
Will the tech world grasp that, though? That partly depends on how we, the public, react to shiny new AI advances, from ChatGPT and Bing to whatever comes next.

Its so easy to get seduced by these technologies. They feel like magic. You put in a prompt; the oracle replies. Theres a natural impulse to ooh and aah. But at the rate things are going now, we may be oohing and aahing our way to a future no one wants.

The bullseye is as big as a possums bum and it dont move and its not firing back at ya like the Johnsons did when our big scrubber bull got into their prize cows before the Ekka last year! All ya gotta do is make yourself comfortable and hit the target! You dont even load your own cartridges, they comes in lil boxes, and ya dont have to steady yourself against the rollbar of the roo shooting truck when you reload!

Sometimes ya gotta wrestle with the city boys and I gotta be real careful coz they break easy - its not like fighting with Doug and Phil and Jack and Boori and Steve and Muzza all at once like we do at home after the muster.

Turns out Im not a bad boxer either and it looks like Im the best the platoons got, and Ive only been beaten by this one bloke from the Engineers - hes 6 foot 5 and 15 stone and three pick handles across the shoulders and as ya know Im only 5 foot 7 and eight stone wringin wet, but I fought him till the other blokes carried me off to the boozer.
