<li><strong>The COVID-19 pandemic and the menstrual cycle: research gaps and opportunities</strong> -

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, discussions on social media and blogs have indicated that women have experienced menstrual changes, including altered menstrual duration, frequency, regularity, and volume (heavier bleeding and clotting), increased dysmenorrhea, and worsened premenstrual syndrome. There have been a small number of scientific studies of variable quality reporting on menstrual cycle features during the pandemic, but it is still unclear whether apparent changes are due to COVID-19 infection/illness itself, or other pandemic-related factors like increased psychological stress and changes in health behaviours. It is also unclear to what degree current findings are explained by reporting bias, recall bias, selection bias and confounding factors. Further research is urgently needed. We provide a list of outstanding research questions and potential approaches to address them. Findings can inform policies to mitigate against gender inequalities in health and society, allowing us to build back better post-COVID.

<li><strong>Impact of social distancing on the mental health of parents and children in Qatar</strong> -

This study investigated the effects of COVID-19-related social distancing practices on parents and childrens mental health and explored the roles parental activities with children and coping strategies among families in Qatar. The sample of 308 parents completed self-reported questionnaires regarding parents mental health, coping strategies, and activities with children, social distancing practices, and both parents and childrens mental health. The results showed a significant positive correlation between social distancing and parents activities with children and their coping strategies, as well as between parents mental health and parents activities with children, childrens mental health, and parents coping strategies. The path analysis showed that social distancing practices influence both parents and childrens mental health through parents activities with children and their coping strategies. Our findings revealed how living under stressful conditions such as COVID-19 could enhance the mental health of family members.

New emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 remains a persistent threat with better immune escape mechanisms and higher transmissibility across the globe. B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant first emerged from Maharashtra, India in December, 2020. This variant is classified to be a major cause and concern of the recent peak of COVID-19 in India. Cellular entry of coronaviruses largely depends on binding of the viral spike (S) proteins to host receptors and priming by host cell proteases through the contact of the droplets containing pathogenic virus particles. Our research study, explore the genomic and structural basis of this variant through computational analysis, protein modelling and molecular dynamics simulations approach and identifies the mechanism through which it is probably more pathogenically evolved with higher transmissibility as compared to the wild-type. These findings reveal the significant difference in rigidity and reducing the flexibility within N-terminal domain (NTD) of the spike protein, hence prevailing case of antibody escape. The results of the present study demonstrate the fitness advantage to the new variant which further need to be critically examined though supportive experimental biology that might help devising better therapeutics and containment of SARS-CoV-2.

<li><strong>Dynamics and self-assembly of the SARS-CoV-2 spike transmembrane domain</strong> -

The spike (S) protein is a trimeric, membrane-anchored fusion protein that enables coronaviruses, such as the SARS-CoV-2, to recognize and fuse with their hosts cells. While the prefusion and postfusion structures of the ectomembrane domain of the spike protein are available, the corresponding organization of its transmembrane domain is obscure. Since the transmembrane and ectomembrane domains of fusion proteins are conformationally linked, an understanding of trimerization and transmembrane conformations in the viral envelope is a prerequisite to completely understand viral fusion by the spike protein. To address this, we computationally explored the self-assembly of the SARS-CoV-2 spike transmembrane domain, starting first by determining the membrane boundaries of the spike transmembrane helix. Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we found the spike protein transmembrane domain to be plastic, and the transmembrane helix to be very dynamic. The observed movements of the helix changed the membrane embedded sequence, and thereby affected the conformational ensemble of the transmembrane assembly in Martini coarse grained simulations, even flipping the super-helical handedness. Analysis of the transmembrane organization of the spike transmembrane helix provided rich insights into the interfaces utilized to self-associate. Moreover, we identified two distinct cholesterol binding regions on the transmembrane helix with different affinities for the sterol. The cholesterol binding pockets overlapped with regions involved in the initiation of transmembrane protein-protein interaction. Together, the results from our multiscale simulations not only provide insight into understudied trimeric helical interfaces in biomembranes, but also enhance our understanding of the elusive transmembrane conformational dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 spike and more generally of viral fusion proteins. These insights should enable the inclusion of the conformations of the spike protein transmembrane domain into the prevalent models of virus fusion.

<li><strong>Parents Distress and Poor Parenting during a COVID-19 Lockdown: The Buffering Effects of Partner Support and Cooperative Coparenting</strong> -

The COVID-19 pandemic is placing demands on parents that may amplify the risk of parents distress and poor parenting. Leveraging a pre-pandemic study in New Zealand, the current research tests whether parents psychological distress during a mandated lockdown predicts relative residual changes in poorer parenting and whether partner support and cooperative coparenting buffer this potentially detrimental effect. Participants included 362 parents, of which 310 were from the same family. Parents had completed assessments of psychological distress and parenting prior to the pandemic, and then then reported on their distress, parenting, partner support and cooperative coparenting during a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown. Parents distress during the lockdown predicted relative residual increases in harsh parenting, but this effect was buffered by partner support. Parents distress also predicted residual decreases in warm/responsive parenting and parent-child relationship quality, but these effects were buffered by cooperative coparenting. Partner support and cooperative coparenting are important targets for future research and interventions to help parents navigate challenging family contexts, including COVID-19 lockdowns.

<li><strong>In vitro evaluation of the effect of mutations in primer binding sites on detection of SARS-CoV-2 by RT-qPCR</strong> -

A number of RT-qPCR assays for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 have been published and are listed by the WHO as recommended assays. Furthermore, numerous commercial assays with undisclosed primer and probe sequences are on the market. As the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic progresses, the virus accrues mutations, which in some cases - as seen with the B.1.1.7 variant - can outperform and push back other strains of SARS-CoV-2. If mutations occur in primer or probe binding sites, this can impact RT-qPCR results and impede SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics. Here we tested the effect of primer mismatches on RT-qPCR performance in vitro using synthetic mismatch in vitro transcripts. The effects of the mismatches ranged from a shift in ct values from -0.13 to +7.61. Crucially, we found that a mismatch in the forward primer has a more detrimental effect for PCR performance than a mismatch in the reverse primer. Furthermore, we compared the performance of the original Charite RdRP primer set, which has several ambiguities, with a primer version without ambiguities and found that without ambiguities the ct values are ca. 3 ct lower. Finally, we investigated the shift in ct values observed with the Seegene Allplex kit with the B.1.1.7 SARS-CoV-2 variant and found a three-nucleotide mismatch in the forward primer of the N target.

Recently, multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants have been detected across the globe.The recent emergence of B.1.617 lineage has created serious public health problem in India. The high transmissibility was observed with this lineage which has led to daily increase in the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections. Apparently, the sub-lineage B.1.617.2 has slowly dominated the other variants including B1617.1, B.617.3 and B.1.1.7. With this, World Health Organization has described B.1.617.2 as variant of concern. Besides this, variant of concern B.1.351 has been also reported from India, known to showreducedefficacyfor many approved vaccines. With the increasing threat of the SARS-CoV-2 variants, it is imperative to assess the efficacy of the currently available vaccines against these variants. Here, we have evaluated the neutralization potential of sera collected from COVID-19 recovered cases (n=20) and vaccinees with two doses of BBV152 (n=17) against B.1.351 and B.1.617.2 compared to the prototype B.1 (D614G) variant.The finding of the study demonstrated a reduction in neutralization titers with sera of COVID-19 recovered cases(3.3-fold and 4.6-fold) and BBV152 vaccinees (3. 0 and 2.7 fold) against B.1.351 and B.1.617.2 respectively. Although, there is reduction in neutralization titer, the whole-virion inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (BBV152) demonstrates protective response against VOC B.1351 and B.1.617.2.

<li><strong>FXR inhibition reduces ACE2 expression, SARS-CoV-2 infection and may improve COVID-19 outcome</strong> -

Prevention of SARS-CoV-2 entry in cells through the modulation of viral host receptors, such as ACE2, could represent a new therapeutic approach complementing vaccination. However, the mechanisms controlling ACE2 expression remain elusive. Here, we identify the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) as a direct regulator of ACE2 transcription in multiple COVID19-affected tissues, including the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. We demonstrate that FXR antagonists, including the over-the-counter compound z-guggulsterone (ZGG) and the off-patent drug ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), downregulate ACE2 levels, and reduce susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection in lung, cholangiocyte and gut organoids. We then show that therapeutic levels of UDCA downregulate ACE2 in human organs perfused ex situ and reduce SARS-CoV-2 infection ex vivo. Finally, we perform a retrospective study using registry data and identify a correlation between UDCA treatment and positive clinical outcomes following SARS-CoV-2 infection, including hospitalisation, ICU admission and death. In conclusion, we identify a novel function of FXR in controlling ACE2 expression and provide evidence that this approach could be beneficial for reducing SARS-CoV-2 infection, thereby paving the road for future clinical trials.

<li><strong>A Web Portal and Workbench for Biological Dissection of Single Cell COVID-19 Host Responses</strong> -

Numerous studies have provided single-cell transcriptome profiles of host responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Critically lacking however is a reusable datamine to allow users to compare and explore these data for insight, inference, and hypothesis generation. To accomplish this, we harmonized datasets from blood, bronchoalveolar lavage and tissue samples from COVID-19 and other control conditions and derived a compendium of gene signature modules per cell type, subtype, clinical condition and compartment. We demonstrate approaches for exploring and evaluating their significance via a new interactive web portal (ToppCell). As examples, we develop three hypotheses: (1) a multicellular signaling cascade among alternatively differentiated monocyte-derived macrophages whose tasks include T cell recruitment and activation; (2) novel platelet subtypes with drastically modulated expression of genes responsible for adhesion, coagulation and thrombosis; (3) a multilineage cell activator network able to drive extrafollicular B maturation via an ensemble of genes extensively associated with risk for developing autoimmunity.

<li><strong>Expression of the ACE2 virus entry protein in the nervus terminalis reveals the potential for an alternative route to brain infection in COVID-19</strong> -

Previous studies suggested that the SARS-CoV-2 virus may gain access to the brain by using a route along the olfactory nerve. However, there is a general consensus that the obligatory virus entry receptor, angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), is not expressed in olfactory receptor neurons, and the timing of arrival of the virus in brain targets is inconsistent with a neuronal transfer along olfactory projections. We determined whether nervus terminalis neurons and their peripheral and central projections may provide an alternative route from the nose to the brain. Nervus terminalis neurons were double-labeled with antibodies against ACE2 and nervus terminalis markers in postnatal mice. We show that most nervus terminalis neurons with cell bodies in the region between the olfactory epithelium and the olfactory bulb express ACE2, and therefore may provide a direct route for the virus from the nasal epithelium and Bowman glands to brain targets, including the telencephalon and diencephalon.

<li><strong>Long-COVID following mild SARS CoV-2 infection: characteristic T cell alterations and response to antihistamines</strong> -

Background: Long-COVID is characterised by the emergence of multiple debilitating symptoms following SARS CoV2 infection. Its aetiology is unclear, and it often follows a mild acute illness. Anecdotal reports of gradual clinical responses to histamine receptor antagonists (HRA) suggest a histamine-dependent mechanism distinct from anaphylaxis. Histamine is a paracrine regulator of T-cells: although T-cell perturbations are reported in acute COVID-19, the T-cell landscape in recovered patients and its relationship to long-COVID remains under-explored. Objective: To survey T-cell populations in patients recovered from mild COVID-19, comparing those with long-COVID and asymptomatic individuals, and to analyse these data in light of symptoms and response to HRA. Design: Prospective observational cohort study. Setting: Single-site outpatient clinic Participants: 65 (87 to 408 days post mild COVID-19). None had sought treatment for acute COVID-19. 16 recovered uneventfully (asymptomatic group), 49 presented with long-COVID (symptomatic group), of whom 25 received HRA. Measurements: Structured long-COVID symptom questionnaire; quantification of T-cell subsets using a standard diagnostic assay. Results: HRA significantly reduced mean symptom burden. T-cell profiles distinguished asymptomatic and long-COVID groups, but did not predict response to HRA. Long-COVID patients had reduced CD4+ and CD8+ effector memory (EM) cells and increased PD-1 expression on central memory (CM) cells. Asymptomatic controls had reduced CD8+ EM cells and increased CD28 expression on CM cells. Conclusion: HRA reduce long-COVID symptoms. T-cell perturbations persist for up to 400 days following mild acute COVID-19 irrespective of long-COVID symptoms. Limitations: Preliminary, single health system study.

<li><strong>Outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease and Cirrhosis: a N3C Study</strong> -

Background and Aims In patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD) with or without cirrhosis, existing data on the risk of adverse outcomes with SARS-CoV-2 infection have been mixed or have limited generalizability. We used the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) Data Enclave, a harmonized electronic health record (EHR) dataset of 5.9 million nationally-representative, diverse, and gender-balanced patients, to describe outcomes in patients with CLD and cirrhosis with SARS-CoV-2. Methods We identified all chronic liver diseases patients with and without cirrhosis who had SARS-CoV-2 testing documented in the N3C Data Enclave as of data release date 5/15/2021. The primary outcome was 30-day all-cause mortality. Survival analysis methods were used to estimate cumulative incidences of death, hospitalization, and mechanical ventilation, and to calculate the associations of SARS-CoV-2 infection, presence of cirrhosis, and demographic and clinical factors to 30-day mortality. Results We isolated 217,143 patients with CLD: 129,097 (59%) without cirrhosis and SARS-CoV-2 negative, 25,844 (12%) without cirrhosis and SARS-CoV-2 positive, 54,065 (25%) with cirrhosis and SARS-CoV-2 negative, and 8,137 (4%) with cirrhosis and SARS-CoV-2 positive. Among CLD patients without cirrhosis, 30-day all-cause mortality rates were 0.4% in SARS-CoV-2 negative patients and 1.8% in positive patients. Among CLD patients with cirrhosis, 30-day all-cause mortality rates were 4.0% in SARS-CoV-2 negative patients and 9.7% in positive patients. Compared to those who tested SARS-CoV-2 negative, SARS-CoV-2 positivity was associated with more than two-fold (aHR 2.43, 95% CI 2.23-2.64) hazard of death at 30 days among patients with cirrhosis. Compared to patients without cirrhosis, the presence of cirrhosis was associated with a three-fold (aHR 3.39, 95% CI 2.96-3.89) hazard of death at 30 days among patients who tested SARS-CoV-2 positive. Age (aHR 1.03 per year, 95% CI 1.03-1.04) was associated with death at 30 days among patients with cirrhosis who were SARS-CoV-2 positive. Conclusions In this study of nearly 220,000 CLD patients, we found SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with cirrhosis was associated with 2.43-times mortality hazard, and the presence of cirrhosis among CLD patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 were associated with 3.39-times mortality hazard. Compared to previous studies, our use of a nationally-representative, diverse, and gender-balanced dataset enables wide generalizability of these findings.

<li><strong>Assessing the lockdown effect from excess mortalities</strong> -

Background and Aims: The reported case numbers of COVID-19 are often used to estimate the growth rate of infections. We use the excess mortality instead to show the effect of most restrictive non-pharmaceutical interventions (mrNPIs) as compared to less restrictive NPIs (lrNPIs) concerning growth rate and death counts. Methods: We estimate the COVID-19 growth rate for Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA from the excess mortality. We use the average growth rate obtained for Sweden and South Korea, the only countries with lrNPIs only, to estimate additional death numbers in the other countries, had mrNPIs not been applied. Results: The growth rate estimated from excess mortality decreased faster for countries with mrNPIs than for Sweden and South Korea, suggesting that the mrNPIs do have a non-negligible effect. Implementing lrNPIs instead of mrNPIs results in up to 3 times higher death numbers. This is not visible when the growth rate is calculated using the reported case numbers of COVID-19 instead of the excess mortality. Conclusion: The conclusion for the spreading of COVID-19 obtained from reported COVID-19 cases in previous studies are most likely biased. Using our method, a more realistic estimate of the growth rate is obtained. Conclusions made for the reproduction number derived from the reported case numbers, such as the apparent insignificance of mrNPIs (lockdowns), might therefore be wrong and will have to be reevaluated using the growth rates obtained with our method.

<li><strong>The stochastic dynamics of early epidemics: probability of establishment, initial growth rate, and infection cluster size at first detection</strong> -

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom">
Emerging epidemics and local infection clusters are initially prone to stochastic effects that can substantially impact the epidemic trajectory, even in the long term. While numerous studies are devoted to the deterministic regime of an established epidemic, mathematical descriptions of the initial phase of epidemic growth are comparatively rarer. Here, we review existing mathematical results, and derive new results to elucidate the early dynamics of an infection cluster started by a single infected individual. We cover the probability of establishment of an epidemic as a function of the distribution of secondary infections, the expectation of epidemic size as a function of time, and the convergence to a deterministic exponential regime. Stochasticity systematically accelerates the initial growth of an epidemic, because epidemics that do not get extinct have faster initial growth on average. This also affects the long-term epidemic growth by increasing the cumulative size by a constant factor, the inverse of the establishment probability, when compared to the deterministic prediction. These results are critical to improve early cluster detection and control. We compute the probability distribution of the first detection time of an infected individual in an infection cluster depending on the testing effort (assumed to be constant in time), and estimate that the SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern B.1.1.7 detected in September 2020 first appeared in the United Kingdom early August 2020. We estimate a minimal testing frequency to detect clusters before they exceed a certain threshold size, and we compute the detection rate of infected individuals during a single mass testing effort. For example, in a COVID-19-parameterized model with an effective reproduction number R=1.1, a fraction 1.3% of a population needs to be randomly tested each day for cluster size to not exceed 30 infected individuals. These results improve our theoretical understanding of early epidemics and will be useful for the study and control of local infectious disease clusters.

<li><strong>SC-MEB: spatial clustering with hidden Markov random field using empirical Bayes</strong> -

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) has been emerging as a powerful technique for resolving gene expression profiles while retaining the tissue spatial information. These spatially resolved transcriptomics make it feasible to examine the complex mulitcellular systems under different microenvironments. To answer scientific questions with spatial transcriptomics, the first step is to identify cell clusters by integrating available spatial information which would expand the understanding of how cell types and states are regulated by tissues. Here, we introduce SC-MEB, an empirical Bayes approach for spatial clustering analysis using hidden Markov random field. We also derive an efficient expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm based on iterative conditional mode (ICM) for SC-MEB. Compared with BayesSpace, a recently developed method, SC-MEB is not only computationally efficient and scalable to the sample size increment, but also is capable of choosing the smoothness parameter and the number of clusters as well. We then performed comprehensive simulation studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of SC-MEB over some existing methods. We first applied SC-MEB to perform clustering analysis in the spatial transcriptomics dataset from human dorsolateral prefrontal cortex tissues that were manually annotated. Our analysis results show that SC-MEB can achieve similar clustering performance with BayesSpace that uses the true number of clusters and fixed smoothness parameter. We then applied SC-MEB to analyze the dataset from a patient with colorectal cancer (CRC) and COVID-19, and further performed differential expression analysis to identify signature genes related to the clustering results. The heatmap for identified signature genes shows that the identified clusters from SC-MEB is more separable than those from BayesSpace. By using pathway analysis, we identified three immune-related clusters and further compared mean expressions of COVID-19 signature genes in immune regions with those in non-immune ones. As such, SC-MEB provides a valuable computational tool for investigating structural organizations of tissues from spatial transcriptomic data.

On a visit to a <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/21459677/tiktok-house-la-hype-sway-girls-in-the-valley">now-defunct TikToker content house</a> in Los Angeles last February, I happened to meet two diminutive 20-somethings, both decked out in chunky streetwear and topped with matching neon-green hair. They were, unmistakably, a pair of TikTok stars, both of whom exhibited the same characteristic shyness Ive come to expect of young influencers when the cameras are off. I asked them what kind of videos they made, and they told me “couple goals.”

“Couple goals” accounts are a crucial part of TikTok World: If the idea of a collab house is the joy of watching your favorite TikTokers hang out together, imagine the ecstasy of watching them <em>kiss</em>. The first few major TikTok couples — Charli DAmelio and Chase Hudson, Addison Rae and Bryce Hall, Josh Richards and Nessa Barrett — were shining examples of the form, revealing just enough on-camera flirtation to make their followers root for the relationship, but keeping enough a mystery to drive speculation within the <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2020/2/12/21127014/famous-birthdays-charli-damelio-chase-hudson">exploding influencer gossip industry</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="m3R43P">
No pair captivated TikTok more than Sienna Mae Gomez and Jack Wright. Gomez, a 17-year-old <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/22226997/body-positivity-instagram-tiktok-fatphobia-social-media">body positivity influencer</a>, and Wright, an 18-year-old dancer and Hype House member, began posting videos of themselves hugging and kissing last October, but left their followers perpetually guessing whether they were officially dating or not. Both were beloved for their senses of humor, displaying the casual cool of the popular kids who youd actually want to be friends with. When the gossip account TikTok Room held its first awards last year, Gomez and Wright won <a href="https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/how-to-watch-the-tiktok-room-awards-nominees-results-more-1470932/">“Best Ship,”</a> devoted to the couple audiences most wanted to get together.
</p>

But after videos showing the two together began to slow down this spring, a friend of Wrights made <a href="https://www.insider.com/sienna-mae-gomez-jack-wright-video-sexual-assault-allegations-timeline-2021-6">an explosive statement on Twitter</a>: that Gomez had allegedly sexually and verbally assaulted Wright. The post, as well as several others made by Wrights twin brother and his friends, were deleted, and Gomez repeatedly denied the accusations. Im not going to linger more on what did or didnt happen between the two of them; theyre teenagers, and I doubt one more person weighing in would be at all helpful, but one part of Gomezs statement stood out.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="x6Vq96">
In her <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CPlAbSznAMF/">video addressing</a> the allegations, she painted a picture that redefined the golden-hour-on-the-beach portrait of her and Wrights relationship. Essentially, she said that shed felt used for content. “If I wasnt around for the TikTok kiss or the TikTok video, I wasnt important to him,” she said. “Two weeks ago I asked him to film a video with me for my mental healths sake because I couldnt move on with everyone thinking we were still together. He told me it wasnt healthy for either of us because this would mean losing his online girlfriend.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="e04fIC">
Its almost <a href="https://www.vulture.com/article/trisha-paytas-youtube-drama-queen.html">verbatim what Trisha Paytas</a>, the YouTuber whod once been a part of David Dobriks Vlog Squad, told me when I asked about her former relationship with fellow member Jason Nash. Hed use her in YouTube videos with “girlfriend” in the title, yet only show affection when they two were on camera. He broke up with her, she says, once hed decided she was no longer “useful” for his content.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="4aNyV6">
Celebrity PR relationships have existed since long before the internet, but theres something deeply cynical and sad about newly microfamous teenagers orchestrating one themselves. Consider, for instance, the number of apparently straight teens on TikTok making content that <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/24/style/tiktok-gay-homiesexuals.html">many have considered queerbaiting</a> (though could, on the other hand, be an earnest means of exploring their own sexualities). Even if youve never been in love before, its easy to mimic the outward appearance of a romantic relationship, and its even easier when both parties understand that doing so successfully will grow their following.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="UJRk9C">
You tend to see this dynamic a lot with married couples on social media too, pairs who build giant audiences by posting “relatable” goofs with their spouse, airing petty annoyances and pulling pranks but assuring viewers that actually, being married rules. (Except, of course, when they break up, as was the case for TikToks most <a href="https://www.intheknow.com/post/mike-and-kat-tiktok-breakup/">famous husband and wife duo, Mike and Kat</a>.) Theres a discomfort in watching some of these types of videos; often you start to get the sense that these two people might actually hate each other yet both feel trapped, not only in the marriage but in the algorithm — the fear that if they no longer post content together, they wont matter anymore.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="0Mj1J2">
All of this is to say: No one should compare their own relationship to those of influencers who bank on presenting the view that they are very much in love. Everyone likes to look at pretty people kissing, but perhaps thats all “couple goals” accounts really need to provide. I cant help but think of one comment I read on a TikTok video of two silhouettes slow dancing in an achingly beautiful aquarium, set to twinkly, misty jazz. It read something like, “ok whose friends actually take videos of them like this,” and I laughed because the answer is obviously “no ones.” The couple clearly tilted their phone on the side of the wall and filmed it themselves because they knew it would look extremely cute and would get a lot of views from envious people. Which is sort of embarrassing, honestly! Like, imagine being in an actual aquarium and having to wait for all the parents and kids to leave the hallway before you can film your corny TikTok and act like some magical fly on the wall just happened to have a camera phone?

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="8qPZBE">
For what its worth, none of the couples mentioned in this column are still together. Well, except one: While the TikTok house they were part of ultimately broke up, the shy, neon-haired kids I met last year are happily still dating. According to their TikToks, they seem very much in love.

The split in the Democratic Party on <a href="https://www.vox.com/22432247/israel-palestine-gaza-conflict-biden-democrats">US policy toward Israel and Palestine</a> isnt just among politicians — its among their voters as well.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="P1WcuL">
In a <a href="https://www.filesforprogress.org/datasets/2021/5/dfp-vox-israel-palestine-TOPS.pdf">new poll with Vox and Data for Progress</a>, Democratic voters are divided on whether President Joe Bidens administration should be harsher toward the Israeli government. The poll, which had a 3 percent margin of error, was conducted from May 19 to 21 among 1,319 likely voters. In it, after being given a short summary of how Biden responded to the crisis last month, 32 percent of Democrats say they believe “the administration should condemn Israels actions.” Meanwhile, 39 percent agreed “the administration has the right approach to Israel.” Only 11 percent of Democrats believe that the administration should be more supportive of Israel.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="uzrgKU">
By the time the poll was being fielded, the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/05/17/world/middleeast/israel-palestine-gaza-conflict-death-toll.html">reported</a> that more than 200 people had died in the latest round of fighting, “the vast majority of them Palestinians killed by Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip.” The conflict heightened after Israel worked to <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/5/10/22428819/israel-palestine-jerusalem-mosque-violence-biden">evict Palestinian families from their homes</a> in East Jerusalem. The Biden administration quietly advocated for a ceasefire, but not forcefully enough, some critics said; the White House condemned violence by Hamas but said it did not find Israels attacks disproportionate.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="tmYtqj">
Republican responses to some of the questions are more uniform. For instance, more than 60 percent believe that “Biden is not supportive enough of Israel,” and 60 percent agree that the administration should condemn Hamas further.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="rATY2Q">
As Voxs Alex Ward has <a href="https://www.vox.com/22432247/israel-palestine-gaza-conflict-biden-democrats">explained</a>, there is a growing divide on US policy toward Israel within the Democratic Party that became more visible in the last month. Thats partly because former President Donald Trumps posture toward Israel was remarkably conciliatory, which can help explain why a once bipartisan approach has become more complicated among Democrats:

As president, Trump gave Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nearly everything he wanted, including recognition of <a href="https://www.vox.com/world/2019/3/21/18276101/trump-israel-netanyahu-golan-heights">Israeli sovereignty over disputed territory like the Golan Heights</a>, moving the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/5/14/17340798/jerusalem-embassy-israel-palestinians-us-trump">US Embassy to Jerusalem</a>, and a “<a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/1/28/21083615/trump-peace-plan-map-netanyahu-israel-palestine">peace plan</a>” that fulfilled nearly all of the premiers wish list. Meanwhile, Trump <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-administration-orders-closure-of-plo-office-in-washington/2018/09/10/7410fe6c-b50c-11e8-a2c5-3187f427e253_story.html">closed a Palestinian political office in Washington, DC</a>, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-47095082">stopped aid to the West Bank and Gaza</a>, and effectively cut ties with top Palestinian officials.
</p>

Some of the partys younger, more diverse, and more progressive lawmakers have also elevated questions about support for Israel and pointed to the plight of the Palestinian people.

Biden, however, seems not to have moved along with his party. Just last week, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, “We have a long and abiding relationship — strategic relationship — with Israel, and that will continue to be the case no matter who is leading the country,” <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/naftali-bennett-biden-israel/2021/06/05/0972e29c-c598-11eb-9a8d-f95d7724967c_story.html">reported the Washington Post</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="HRVNn6">
A plurality of Democratic voters, though, want that relationship to shift: The poll found 45 percent want the US to decrease the $3.8 billion in military aid it sends to Israel.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh just handed down a subtle but potentially very significant signal that he will protect at least some of the feminist victories won by Ruth Bader Ginsburg two decades before she joined the Supreme Court. Kavanaughs move does not mean that he is likely to tack left on questions like abortion, but it does suggest there are some limits to this Courts willingness to toss out earlier victories by liberals.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="S7Rl2S">
In <a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=9505211932515131375&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=6&amp;as_vis=1&amp;oi=scholarr"><em>Reed v. Reed</em></a><em> </em>(1971), a case that Ginsburg helped litigate, the Supreme Court held for the first time that the Constitution limits the governments ability to discriminate on the basis of gender. Over time, the Court gradually expanded this holding, eventually concluding that “a party seeking to uphold government action based on sex <a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=1428365285620704265&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=6&amp;as_vis=1&amp;oi=scholarr">must establish an exceedingly persuasive justification for the classification</a>.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="zXiZ1M">
Yet while these decisions are now firmaments of American constitutional law, they were controversial among conservatives for many years. As a young lawyer working in the Reagan Justice Department, for example, future Chief Justice John Roberts wrote several memos and other documents suggesting that these anti-gender-discrimination decisions represent “<a href="https://nwlc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/NWLCRobertsReport_FINAL_Aug2005.pdf">an unjustified intrusion into legislative affairs</a>.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="hUeGje">
The Supreme Court currently has a 6-3 conservative majority, Roberts is widely considered the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/6/29/21306895/supreme-court-abortion-chief-justice-john-roberts-stephen-breyer-june-medical-russo">most moderate member</a> <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/11pdf/11-393c3a2.pdf">of that majority</a>, and many of the conservative justices have shown a disregard for certain precedents — <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/5/18/22440256/brett-kavanaugh-supreme-court-edwards-vannoy-abortion-criminal-justice-constitution-stare-decisis">including Kavanaugh</a>. So it was far from clear that at least five of the current justices would vote to uphold the Courts gender equality decisions if confronted by a case challenging those decisions. Until today, there appeared to be a real risk that Ginsburgs legacy could be overruled by a conservative bench.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="lQwod8">
But that risk now appears greatly diminished, thanks to a move by Justice Kavanaugh.
</p>

On Monday, the Supreme Court announced that it will not hear <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/orders/courtorders/060721zor_6537.pdf"><em>National Coalition for Men v. Selective Service System</em></a>, a lawsuit challenging a federal law that requires men — and not women — to register for the draft when they turn 18.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="EeeGSH">
That might seem like bad news to anyone hoping the court would apply gender nondiscrimination precedents to a new area. But the good news comes in a brief opinion that Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="HpU9gH">
In it, she suggests that she believes that gender discrimination in the selective service program is unconstitutional —<strong> </strong>the main reason shes not interested in taking up the case, she seems to say, is that Congress is considering legislation that could expand selective service registration to women.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="psHe9X">
Kavanaugh joined the opinion in full. And that opinion begins with a quote summarizing many of the Courts gender equality decisions — the Constitution “prohibits the Federal Government from discriminating on the basis of sex absent an exceedingly persuasive justification,’” Justice Sotomayor wrote in her opinion — followed by a long list of citations to the Courts gender equality decisions.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="v6sJ0X">
So, in joining this opinion, Kavanaugh signaled that he agrees with Sotomayor, and with the gender equality decisions that Sotomayor cites.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="9bvsIH">
That does not mean that these decisions are completely safe — on a 6-3 Court, Kavanaugh could be outvoted by the other five Republican appointees — but it is a hopeful sign for feminism. Kavanaugh is the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/5/18/22440256/brett-kavanaugh-supreme-court-edwards-vannoy-abortion-criminal-justice-constitution-stare-decisis">Courts median vote</a> in most contentious cases, so it is unlikely that the Court will overrule a major line of precedents without his approval.

The Courts gender equality decisions, briefly explained
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="TKkXbw">
As mentioned above, the Court did not hold that gender discrimination can violate the Constitution until the early 1970s. Thats likely because of a conflict between the 14th Amendments text and the historical context that led to the amendments ratification.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="wtgD1x">
The 14th Amendment prohibits states from denying “<a href="https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/amendmentxiv">to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws</a>,” and, as the Court held in <a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=16234924501041992561&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=6&amp;as_vis=1&amp;oi=scholarr"><em>Bolling v. Sharpe</em></a> (1954), the Fifth Amendment imposes these limitations on the federal government as well. This reference to the “equal protection of the laws” is quite expansive, and could potentially be read to prohibit many forms of discrimination.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="9Lal3L">
But the 14th Amendment was also <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Fourteenth-Amendment">ratified in 1868</a>, just a few years after the United States ended a civil war fought over slavery. The original purpose of this amendment was to ensure racial equality, especially for formerly enslaved people, not to protect women from discrimination.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="HJLvOe">
The Supreme Court squared this circle by holding that the Constitution places fairly significant limits on the governments ability to discriminate on the basis of gender, but that these limits are <a href="https://www.vox.com/2019/11/8/20952728/democrats-virginia-ruth-bader-ginsburg-equal-rights-amendment">less strict than the limits imposed on race discrimination</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="PzXj09">
When the government engages in race discrimination, its actions must survive a test known as “<a href="https://www.vox.com/2016/6/23/11743972/fisher-texas-affirmative-action-supreme-court">strict scrutiny</a>,” which, as its name implies, is very hard to overcome. To prevail in a race discrimination case, the government must show that such discrimination is “<a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=6883717302676149601&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=6&amp;as_vis=1&amp;oi=scholarr">precisely tailored to serve a compelling governmental interest</a>.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="oiL3td">
Gender discrimination, meanwhile, is only subject to a test known as “intermediate scrutiny” — which, as its name implies, is less rigorous than strict scrutiny. The Court initially applied this somewhat weaker test to laws that engage in gender discrimination in <a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=2528522570594071994&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=6&amp;as_vis=1&amp;oi=scholarr"><em>Craig v. Boren</em></a> (1976). Later decisions established that the government must have an “<a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=1428365285620704265&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=6&amp;as_vis=1&amp;oi=scholarr">exceedingly persuasive justification</a>” for gender discrimination — so laws that discriminate on the basis of gender are still treated with a fair amount of skepticism — but the Court has never applied strict scrutiny to gender discrimination cases.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="2fpaSW">
Many conservatives resisted this compromise approach to gender discrimination cases, however. As recently as 2011, Justice Antonin Scalia argued that lawmakers may enact laws that treat men differently from women. “Certainly the Constitution does not require discrimination on the basis of sex,” the late justice said in a decade-old interview. “<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/scalia-constitution-doesnt-protect-women-or-gays-from-discrimination/">The only issue is whether it prohibits it. It doesnt</a>.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="17XlNn">
In 1981, future Chief Justice Roberts penned a draft article <a href="https://armsandthelaw.com/archives/2005/08/john_edwards_an.php">explaining the conservative objection to cases such as <em>Craig</em></a>. “Classifications based on race are suspect and do merit careful scrutiny, in light of the historic purpose of the Fourteenth Amendment,” Roberts wrote. But “extension of heightened scrutiny to other insular and discrete groups … represents an unjustified intrusion into legislative affairs.”
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="dOaOXK">
Roberts, in other words, took the position that the 14th Amendment must be read exclusively in light of its narrow historical purpose — to protect against race discrimination — and that its equal protection guarantee should not be applied to gender (or any other form of) discrimination.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="UsNZLK">
Roberts, it should be noted, wrote these words in a draft article prepared for publication by his boss, then-Attorney General William French Smith. So its unclear whether Roberts was expressing his personal views or the views of his superiors. But the young Roberts also wrote several other documents suggesting that he disagreed with decisions like <em>Craig, </em>and several womens groups criticized his nomination to the Supreme Court, in part due to <a href="https://nwlc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/NWLCRobertsReport_FINAL_Aug2005.pdf">fears that he would overrule these decisions</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="rQTKkL">
In any event, it now appears that at least one member of the Courts six-justice conservative majority is unpersuaded by the conservative critique of decisions like <em>Craig</em>. Justice Kavanaughs decision to join Sotomayors opinion in the <em>Selective Service</em> case is significant because it signals that at least one Republican appointee to the Supreme Court will vote to strike down laws and policies that discriminate on the basis of gender.

<h3 id="pEtxxD">
So what does this mean for the future?
</h3>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="QIRE9n">
If the Court does hear a case in the future asking it to overrule decisions like <em>Craig</em>, Kavanaughs vote is not enough to prevent that outcome. Though the Courts three liberal members would undoubtedly reject an attack on <em>Craig</em> and similar cases, those three liberals plus Kavanaugh only add up to four of the Courts nine votes.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="dYYvHs">
But theres also good reason to believe that at least one of the remaining five justices would reject an attempt to toss out decades of precedents establishing that the Constitution frowns upon gender discrimination. Although Roberts is very conservative, hes also more cautious about overruling precedents than his other conservative colleagues. Indeed, last June, he broke with those colleagues and <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/6/29/21306895/supreme-court-abortion-chief-justice-john-roberts-stephen-breyer-june-medical-russo">voted to strike down an anti-abortion law</a> because the law was nearly identical to one that the Court had already declared unconstitutional.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="83qvo4">
Whatever Roberts may have thought about gender discrimination and the Constitution back in the Reagan years, hes likely to be more cautious today about striking down a line of decisions that stretch back half a century.

<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ieimhI">
As a law professor, Justice Amy Coney Barrett also warned that there are certain past precedents that “<a href="https://www.vox.com/21497317/originalism-amy-coney-barrett-constitution-supreme-court">no serious person would propose to undo even if they are wrong</a>,” and, in her brief time as a justice, Barrett has <a href="https://www.vox.com/22279878/supreme-court-death-penalty-religious-liberty-dunn-ray-smith-elena-kagan-amy-coney-barrett">occasionally broken with the rightmost faction</a> of her Court. So its also possible that she would vote to preserve the Courts gender discrimination decisions.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="ciKSxz">
This is not to say that feminists should heave a sigh of relief and expect the Court to preserve every past decision that advances womens equality — if you expect Kavanaugh or Barrett to vote to uphold <em>Roe v. Wade</em>, or if you expect Roberts to cast another vote for abortion rights in the future, then you should be <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/5/17/22233440/supreme-court-abortion-roe-wade-dobbs-jackson-womens-health-amy-coney-barrett">prepared to be gravely disappointed</a>.
</p>
<p data-aos="fade-left" data-aos-anchor-placement="bottom-bottom" id="Bkz7VK">
But, at the very least, Kavanaughs move in the <em>Selective Service</em> case suggests that some of the most important feminist victories of the past several decades will not be overruled.

They loaded up their mini van and headed north. After driving for a few hours, they were caught in a terrible blizzard. So they pulled into a nearby farm and asked the attractive lady who answered the door,if they could spend the night.

“I realize its terrible weather out there and I have this huge house to myself, but Im recently widowed”.She explained " Im afraid the neighbours will talk if I let you in".

“Dont worry” John said. " Well be happy to sleep in the barn and if the weather breaks, well be gone at first light".

The lady agreed, the 2 men slept in the barn and left at first light. They enjoyed a great weekend of skiing.

But about 9 months later, John got a letter from an attorney and it took him some time to figure it out. He determined it was from the attorney of the widow they met during their skiing trip.

He dropped in on his friend Jack.

John: Jack, do you remember that good looking widow that we met on that skiing weekend?

Jack: Yes I do.

John: Be honest with me Jack, did you pay her a visit at the middle of the night?

Jack( looks a bit embarrassed now) : Yes John, I did.

John: Now tell me this Jack, did you give her my name and address instead of yours?

Jack( his face now beet red with embarrassment) : Im sorry buddy, Im afraid I did. Why do you ask?

John: She just died and left me everything.
</p>
